“Hello?” In the pocket of his plaid polo tee, Gavin’s phone buzzed. It was a text from an unknown number. You can’t be here. Why is anyone texting me? I don’t like people! They usually just made fun of him. That’s why Mom let him homeschool. Computers were much better, and more controllable. He walked between the pines and found a spring-fed pond, too perfect to be natural, in the middle of a glade. A growl escaped his stomach. It must be snack time. He shoved his hand in his cargo pocket and pulled out the bag of gummy worms his Nana had bought him. The one he pulled out was double-length. He loved those. His lips smacked as he sucked the worm in. Once in his mouth, he tried to chew the sweet candy, but couldn’t. It was too tough, and it didn’t taste all that good. He bit down, hard.
