ROGUE BRIDE
SCARLET’S POV
I spun around on my heels and started walking down the hallway when Elena spat. “Scarlet Omega, who could’ve thought…”
I curled my hands into a fist, my veins burning with a mixture of pain, and resentment.
Elena continued. “Tonight, you’ll watch me shift, and become the next Luna,” her voice trailed off. She pulled at loose strands of my hair. “Scarlet, you were meant to live behind my shadows, but you refuse.” Her voice dripped with resentment.
I let out an exasperated sigh. “Not today, Elena. Not today.” I made to walk away, when she yanked hard at my hair, and pulled me.
Pain exploded through my head. I bit down on my lower lips, and the coppery taste of blood filled my mouth. “I’m not done talking to you, damnit!” She snapped, and added. “I made sure you lost your wolf.”
“Between you and I…”
A pause.
A long pause that lasted only a few minutes, but could’ve passed for eternity crackled between us.
Elena pushed her head forward, and whispered into my ears. “I never needed your wolf to awaken mine.”
The chains holding my sanity shattered into a thousand pieces.
I lost it. Totally and completely.
I threw a punch at Elena, weak and uncalculated. She saw it coming before it landed. Elena ducked carefully, like a skilled warrior.
She gripped my hands, and shoved me into the wall. I lost my balance and crashed with a loud bang. Liquid dripped from the corner of my head.
But I was drowned in my thirst for rage to think about anything. “All these years—”
Elena cut in. “Yes, all these years I watched you suffer for nothing,” she heaved. “I hated that you were in the spotlight, Scarlet,”
“Your hair is unique. For f**k sake you had a talent in drawing when we were only four!” She rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with disgust. “I was the first twin. I should be in the spotlight. I had to think of a way to take you out.”
I swallowed past a lump that gathered around my throat. “We were only ten.”
Elena scoffed, and stared at me squarely. “You should’ve thought of that when you shifted. I had to take care of things earlier.” She smacked her lips, folding her hands over her chest. “And to a red wolf? I couldn’t take it.”
“I’m going to tell dad and mom.” I managed to say with bleak hope.
Elena grunted. “Can’t you read the room Scarlet Omega?” She quipped. “Nobody’s gonna believe you, not over their chosen Luna.”
“No!” I screamed. “Elena, you took everything from me!”
“You weren’t supposed to exist. Maybe then, you wouldn’t have to see this side of me,” she flipped her hair. “Tonight, I’ll take the last ounce of your wolf’s essence. You’ll never have the chance to shift…ever.”
Tears blinded my vision. Years of pent up anger, years of putting up with Elena’s scheming lies, and living in her shadows.
“Arghhhhhh!” I threw punches that never landed at her. Elena snickered, kicked me so hard, and pulled me across the hallway.
I scrambled to get on my feet, fighting for my balance. Elena’s eyes were covered with disgust. Her lips fell apart.
She was about to speak when her eyes brushed over my shoulders, and landed on something behind me. “f**k you, Elena.” Her voice was almost a whisper.
Elena’s eyes turned red, and her claws sliced out. She scratched her hands, inflicting injuries on herself.
Then, in one split second she collapsed on her knees, clutching hard at the hands she’d inflicted herself with injuries.
“Scarlet, I’m sorry. It’ll all end tonight,” She said, faking tears. “Please, you don’t have to hurt me. I’m your twin sister.”
For a few seconds, I was blank. Everything happened so fast. “Elena!” Father’s voice followed. “What the hell is going on here?”
“Sweetheart! What has she done this time?” Mother shrieked. They pushed past me, it took everything I had to hold my balance. My mother pulled her up. “You don’t have to apologize for anything.”
Elena shook her head. “No mom. I have to apologize,” Elena began, in her soft convincing voice. “Scarlet was mad because I begged her to be my maid in waiting tonight.”
What! No f*****g way in hell!
Too stunned to speak, I just stared waiting for my father’s heavy hand, and his belt to land on me. Tears burned behind my eyes.
I couldn’t wrap my head around the scene that unfolded before me. Elena wasn’t done yet. “I know you hate me. But it shouldn’t be to the extent of hurting your own twin.”
She’d barely gotten the words out of her mouth when a slap landed on my cheek. My father glared daggers at me.
“How dare you?”
My cheeks vibrated with pain, as the corner of my lips dripped with warm liquid. My head banged with a terrible headache, I felt fuzzy.
The bagel I’d eaten for breakfast slurched in my stomach. I fought the urge to throw everything in my stomach. “I-I-I-”
Elena cut in before I had a chance to speak. “I know you were too deep in your head. It’s not your fault.”
My father let out a groan. “Stop trying to defend her, Elena. She’s not worth it.”
“I didn’t hit her.” Even though I didn’t care if I did.
My mother hissed. “Then how do you explain this?” She asked, pointing at the injuries on Elena’s hands. “She did this on purpose.”
“No mom,” Elena began. “It’s fine if she doesn’t want to be my maid in waiting at the mating ceremony tonight.”
My fathers nose flared. “She doesn’t have a choice,” he looked down at his gold wristwatch. “We have three hours until the ball. Scarlet Omega, go and get your sister mating dress ready.”
“Father, she…”
Father cut in. “One more thing, you know you need to give Elena the final essence tonight,” his voice dripped with coldness.
My breath hitched. “There is nothing left of my wolf.” My voice was hollow.
Luna Martina rolled her eyes. “Oh Scarlet, you don’t have to act selfish,” She paused. “Even if you can’t feel your wolf, the pack healer said you have to keep giving Elena until the night of the mating ceremony.”
