Barry’s heart had never raced as fast. Possibly on the global finals seven years ago, but that would be a close call. He could see her frame resting on the bed against the moonlight invading through the window. He could hear her relaxed breathing. He could feel her perfume—albeit mixed with cigarettes—filling the room. Step by step, Barry edged closer to the bed. She had her back to him, but he knew Dana was waiting. Maybe he could surprise her, if he kept his pace soft against the carpet. And surprise her he did. She surprised him too. As soon as Barry touched Sarah’s bare shoulders, she screamed and kicked until she fell from the bed. As soon as Sarah screamed, and Barry realized the misunderstanding—albeit still absolutely uncapable of understanding—he too screamed and reeled back
