It was the monday after Justin and Vanesa went to the rink.
Vanesa woke up worried. She didn't have Justin's number and she couldn't ask her brothers for it because it will lead to questions she didn't want to answer.
So she woke up and got ready to go to school. Her mom drove her. The moment Jenn stopped the car Vanesa said goodbye and jumped out of the car. She wanted to see if he was okay.
She looked around the parking and saw his car. She went inside the school building, went to her locker and discreetly looked around for him but he wasn't there. Her brothers were not there either.
The school bell rang and she went to her first class which was English.
"Class today we are watching snippets of a movie. After watching I want everyone in groups of three. Each group will discuss and present opinions on how each situations should have been handled." Miss Montèm addressed her students.
The students were so excited but Vanesa's mind was elsewhere. Yes she saw his car but she didn't see him. The girl behind her tapped her on her shoulder. Vanesa's looked at her. "Uhm yes?"
"Want to join my group?" the girl asked. "Yeah sure" she replied.
"Miss Jacobs please close the blinds for us"
Vanesa closed the blinds on all windows and the classroom went dark. She sat down and Miss Montèm started the videos. "The movie is called The Notebook. Please pay attention." she told them.
There were seven scenes. Vanesa has never seen the movie before but apparently Lya the girl who sits behind her knows the movie by heart. From the scenes Miss Montèm showed them Vanesa couldn't stop rolling her eyes. The whole thing was ridiculous to her.
After watching Vanesa rolled up the blinds they all gathered in their groups. They were twenty-five in total. One group ended up with four members and had to share one of the scenes with Vanesa's group.
"This is going to be super interesting. Let's see which group has the stronger argument." Miss Montèm said excitedly. "I'm giving you until next week wednesday to come up with a good presentation. Now let's gather in our group and discuss."
Vanesa's group consisted of Vanesa, Lya and a boy named Mike. "I love movies but what's there to talk about? She doesn't want to stay with him so he should let her go. Plenty of chicks in the coop." he shrugged.
Lya looked hurt "How could you say that?" she demanded. "What? It's the truth. She's playing a game." Mike defended himself "Look according to the scenes she did this before. She left him and then came back again. She's confusing him. It's not right."
Vanesa watched them go back and forth. "Mike is right."
Lya gasped "No. Not you too."
"Hear me out. Noah looks like a good guy. He loves her. She feels the same way about him but she's choosing money." she paused.
"I know that." Lya agreed. "But her parents are the problem." She tried to make them understand.
Vanesa smiled. "Look I know she was young but my parents also went through something almost similar. My mom and dad fought for their love."
"Wait what happened?" Lya asked interested. "Who was against them being together? Come on tell me."
Vanesa giggled "My grandparents from mom's side. They weren't against dad but they were trying to follow an old family tradition."
"What tradition is that?" Mike asked curiously. "They believe in arranged marriage. It's been like that forever. Each and every marriage in their family has been arranged and they all never ended with a divorce."
"Never?" Lya was fascinated. "Yes. My grandmother tried to break tradition but it didn't work. She fell in love with a guy from Milrand. But it didn't workout. He cheated. She ended up back home and married the guy they arranged for her. She's happily married."
"Wow! So they thought your mom was doing the same thing?" Lya loves drama. "So your parents are the odd marriage. So exciting. But I still think Noah should calm down." she took a pencil and pretended to file her nails.
The bell rang. "Okay class see you tomorrow. Don't forget we have a test tomorrow" Miss Montèm informed. Some of them groaned in reply. Lya and Vanesa got up and walked to the door. "Wait up. We are in the next class together." Mike ran after them.
The next class was Biology. Mr Stan was busy on his laptop. "Morning sir" Mike greeted.
"Morning. Don't trouble me today Mike." Mr Stan gave him a serious look.
Mike raised his hands and laughed. "No trouble from me sir." They sat down. Mike took his sit in front. Lya sat just in front too. Her sit was next to the window in front of Mr Stan's Desk. She had a little crush on Mr Stan. Vanesa's desk sat at hers.
The class had eighteen students. Six were girls. If it was up to Stan he would have all of them to be boys. He didn't have anything against the girls but on his first year as a teacher he got in trouble. Some girl had a crush on him. She got a hold on his number from a group chat he created for the chat.
The girl. Lucy Turner. She texted him a few time. At first the texts were all about topics she said she didn't understand in class. Then started flirting. He tried to stop her flirtatious behavior by blocking her.
That didn't stop her. She changed her number. She apologized for her behavior. When he thought things were okay the principal of the school called him to his office. Lucy wad there. Stan was confused. The principal asked him about his relationship with Lucy. He told the truth. He didn't see a reason to omit information.
He told him about Lucy texting him and why he blocked her number. But apparently Lucy told the principal the opposite. She even told the principal that Stan told her to delete the messages. Lucy was sent back to class.
"I know I should have reported it. But I thought I could handle it." He told the principal. He even showed the text to Mr Lewis. A few days later the girl tried to commit suicide. Stan was devastated. Lucy wrote a letter which was found by her parents. It was addressed to him. She was apologizing.
He went to see her at the hospital and found her mom there. The mom was disappointed in her daughter. Stan told the mom it's water under the bridge.
After visiting the hospital he decided to leave the school. So he resigned with immediate effect. A few months later he left town. Found himself a job at a hardware store and that's when he was approached by man who told him to keep an eye Vanesa Jacobs. So he took this job but she didn't join the school until two weeks after. Apparently she had magic but Stan see or feel it. Maybe she hasn't woken her power.
He agreed for two reasons. He missed teaching and also because he was told that she's the Butterfly. The Butterfly is a legendary being according to the prophecy. He can't believe such dangerous power could come from such a small girl but the man he met was dead serious about keeping an eye on this girl.
The man told him not to worry about tailing her. He just needed to keep an eye out at the school. Make sure his senses were on high alert.
He stood in front "Class tell me. What do you know about something called chimera?" he asked them. Some of them looked around and asked each other. "I didn't open a discussion." He noticed that Vanesa was the only one who kept quiet. "Miss Jacobs do you have an answer for us?" he asked curiously.
She nodded "It is something that has two or more characteristics from different species or organisms."
He looked at her. He was impressed. "Do you have an example?" He wondered what else she knew. Chimeras were not something a nine grader would know. It was not even part of the syllabus. He made up topic to test her knowledge.
Chimeras were popular among the magic community. Halflings, hybrids and tribrids. He is also one. His mom a human who married a vampire. He doesn't have to drink blood so often like full blooded vampires aka his Dad. Just once a week to keep him self sane. He tried once to stay away from it. He lasted two weeks before started feel dizzy. His dad scolded him as if he was a child.
Two hundred and twenty years. He tried to remind his dad but he doesn't care. Of course he doesn't blame him. His is the only living thing that reminds him of his mom. Sarah Stan died when Mason was just forty.
