After the first words of her stepfather's, Dahlia zoned out. She did not hear the remaining words that he said or the jab her stepsister threw at her. It was finally happening.
She knew that the day her stepfather felt like she had overstayed her welcome, she would be sold off to anyone who wanted to have her. She has been lucky so far, but she knew that she won't be lucky this time as the party was held specifically for her. There was no escape route for her.
Dahlia felt tears sting the back of her eyes. As much as she hated her stepfamily, she would rather live here as a maid than with any of those alphas that her stepfather was friends with.
They were just as cruel as he was. She won't have anyone to defend her should they treat her badly. She has heard about the things they did to the women in their harem, especially ones who had no backing.
Most of them do not even treat their fated mates right. She dreads what she would go through in the hands of these alphas. She couldn't allow it to happen, she had to protest. This will be the first time she would be going against her stepfather, but she had to do it.
Dahlia took in a deep breath to calm her racing her before looking up at Cameron, “I am sorry alpha king Cameron, but I am not ready to get married”
Loud gasps filled the air after these words left her mouth. Dahlia felt her heart freeze in fear when her stepfather's blue eyes darkened with anger. Never has anyone gone against him. His word was authority in the Golden moon pack, and anything he says goes; it was law.
“What did you just say?”. Her stepfather asked.
Dahlia's eyes went to the floor quickly, especially when she saw his eyes flickering between blue and gold. She knew that Cameron's wolf was close to the surface, and she could be torn apart if she made another mistake. She felt her back becoming sweaty under the pressure of her father's anger, and all she wanted to do at that moment was fall on her knees and beg for mercy.
She held herself up with the little strength she had left. The anger of an alpha can be bad when directed to a wolf, not to talk of her who has no wolf. She felt like she would die. She couldn't bring herself to respond to his question as all the bravado she had, had left after getting her in trouble.
“Good” Cameron continued when Dahlia did not reply," now return to your room and prepare yourself for your marriage” he dismissed her before turning to address the elders
Dahlia stumbled through the palace hallway, not seeing anything and anyone. Some of the maids gave her pitiful glances, they might not know that she would be given out for marriage soon. One thing they did know for sure was that, anytime she was called to her stepfather's throne room, it always ended badly.
Dahlia was pale by the time she got to her room and she dropped on her bed. Her mind clouded with thoughts about how she would be able to survive if she was sold off to an old and cruel Alpha. She shivered and felt her skin prickle with unease as the thought of an old man laying hands on her flashed through her mind.
She knew that she wouldn't be able to bear it. What if the alpha ends up raping her every night the way her stepfather do rape one of the women that was just sold off to him. The woman was a young girl of nineteen, sold off by her father to Cameron, who fell in lust with her at first sight when he went to the local market where the girl's father had a stall. Anytime she refused to allow Cameron to touch her, he would make his guard hold her down while he had his wicked ways with her.
Dahlia jerked up from her bed and began to pace to and fro her room. She could not allow the same thing to happen to her. What if the alpha likes her more than the other woman, and then they conspire together to get rid of her, like the way they did her mother?
Dahlia's mother had died from food poisoning and since then, Dahlia had been trying to stay out of the way of the other wives so that she wouldn't be killed too. The only reason she had been surviving was because she posed no threat to the children of the other wives.
Most times she was grateful that she never got her wolf, and other times she hated it. She has been able to communicate with her wolf when she was younger, but after her mother's death, she began to lose connection with her wolf. She couldn't pinpoint the actual time she stopped hearing from her wolf.
She couldn't remain here and wait for her stepfather to sell her off. She would rather die than be with any alpha who wasn't her mate. She had to escape.
Dahlia rushed to her window and looked down. For the first time since she was moved to this room after her mother's death, she was grateful. The royal family was supposed to live on the top floor of the palace castle, but she was living on the second floor.
All she had to do was cut her bedsheet and tie it to the leg of her bed, and she would be able to escape through the window. She knew everything about the palace like the back of her hand. She also knew an underground road she could use to escape.
She knew the time the guards changed their position every night. She knew all these because every so often she would be made to kneel outside all through the night after offending any of her step sibling's.
A wide smile blossomed on Dahlia's face before she went to sit on her bed, but she couldn't stay still. If she was going to escape tonight, she needed to get ready. She had no money or food. Her father never assigned any amount of money to her. She lived like a servant in the palace.
If she was going to survive, she needed both money and food and thick clothes. It was winter and she did not have a wolf. She won't survive if she went out like that.
She had thought of escaping so many times in the past, but she never went through with her plan because she had never been threatened to this extent. She could bear her family maltreating her, but she could not bear it if she had to live with an evil alpha.
Dahlia jumped up and went to the palace kitchen. She needed to steal food she would be taking along with her. The fear of being out alone and becoming a rogue scared her, but not as much as being married off to a strange alpha.
