Chapter 5

225 Words
My family life was truly unbearable. Whenever we managed to save a little money, my father took it and gambled it away. When he lost, his anger spilled over onto my sister, my mom, and me. During those times, my mom just endured it, silently tolerating my father's violence. She didn't resist and never tried to protect my sister and me. Only my sister acted as a shield, pulling me close to protect me from his rage. I often wished my mom would divorce my dad and take my sister and me away from him. Unfortunately, even when my father forced my sister to marry a thug for 100,000 dollars to settle his gambling debts, my mom still lacked the courage to stand against him. At just ten years old, I could only helplessly watch my sister being taken away, and she was never to be heard from again. Over the years, I studied hard and became a reporter, driven not just by the desire to escape that suffocating home, but also by the hope of finding my sister. I put my feelings aside and glanced at Luke. "I don't know. I haven't seen her since she got married." Suddenly, a thought flashed in my mind. I eagerly asked Luke a question. "Mr. Norman, did you ask about my sister because you've seen her somewhere?"
