Chapter 8

221 Words
After hearing my account, Luke immediately posed a question. "The kidnappers who took Frank and his mother were so ruthless that they killed her just for his father refusing to pay the ransom. Why would they let Frank go?" He pressed on, "Wouldn't it be less risky to just kill him rather than risk him remembering their faces and voices and possibly identifying them at the police station?" I froze. This was indeed a valid point. "Maybe the kidnappers thought of Frank as just a child and felt a moment of compassion?" As soon as I said this, Luke chuckled. I quickly realized my mistake, my cheeks flushing. How could someone capable of kidnapping and murder possibly have a soft spot? What I said was truly absurd. "So what do you think?" Luke leaned back on the sofa, his expression a mix of understanding and depth. "Ms. Alison, the only reason the kidnappers could let Frank go is that they had some leverage over him, something that could ruin his life." "What could that be?" I was truly curious. What could an eight-year-old child possibly hold that would be so damning? After all, it was something that would make a ruthless kidnapper feel secure enough to release Frank. A strange gleam flickered in Luke's eyes. "For example, the crime of matricide."
