Jonathan rolled over as the first rays of sunshine hit the window in the bedroom where he slept. Instantly he jumped up and closed the blinds before returning to bed.
“Good morning.” His mate smiled as Jonathan slid his hand over their hip.
“Good morning.” Jonathan smiled as he snuggled in.
“And what do we have on the agenda for today?”
“I believe we will be visiting you.” Jonathan smiled.
“I will look forward to it.” Jay replied.
Jonathan smiled through his fatigued haze. He had finally given in to his attraction to Jay just nights before and already their different sleep schedules were affecting him. He couldn’t help it though, he found Jay so alluring.
Jonathan smiled as he kissed Jays neck. “I need a shower.” He groaned as he made a move to get up.
“Tease.” Jay smiled as Jonathan go out of bed.
Jonathan smiled as he sauntered past giving Jay a wink.
“I might head back to my place and try to sleep a little. Hopefully we can figure out how to make it work with the different sleep habits..
“We’ll work it out.” Jonathan called out as he stepped into the shower.
Jonathan began to wash himself as he heard Jay make his way into the basement and leave vis the tunnel system hat ran under the communities for the Young Vampires.
“He smiled as he thought about their night. He had dated women but never ended up sleeping with any of them because he hadn’t felt that pull. He was beginning to think it was because none of them were his mate until he met Jay. Then it had all made sense.
“He had purposely avoided the Young Vampires for years, five years in fact. A month ago James had become impatient with his excuses, thinking he was scared of them and insisted he needed to be the one to deliver a message. Jay had been alone, while the others were either visiting their families or setting up their business. Someone had to monitor the surveillance cameras and Jay had volunteered. Truth be told, he had been trying to avoid Jonathan as well.
When Jonathan had waled in and found him alone it was over. The walls they had fought so hard to build around themselves crumbled. They had finally acknowledged their attraction.
This now brought about a new problem. Jonathan was acting Beta, would the community continue to accept him in this role if they knew?
“Jonathan?” James called out as he walked through the front door.
“In the shower.” Jonathan called back, quickly finishing and turning the water off.
“I’ve just received some important news. We need to head down to see the Vamps.” James called back.
Jonathan walked into the bedroom and began to dress. He hadn’t been exceptionally comfortable with living in the Alphas home, but James had been insistent that someone had to man it. He had overcome his discomfort and now enjoyed it. It was one of his roles to ensure the fridge and cupboards were always full so that the pack members could drop in for a meal when there was a need. He found he actually liked this and had got to know a lot of the pack better this way.
When he walked down the stairs James was cooking bacon and eggs.
“Will Jay be joining us for breakfast?” James asked casually.
Jonathan stopped dead in his tracks.
“I can smell him Jonathan, I know he’s been here. We also have cameras on the door way that leads from the basement here. I saw him leave,” James smiled.
“Oh, ahh.” Jonathan began.
“Lost for words Beta? That’s not like you.” James laughed.
Jonathan sighed. “Does anyone else know?” He asked.
“No, just me although if I had to guess I would say Macey and Patrick have an inkling. Those three are very close.” James replied. “Why the secret?”
Jonathan shrugged as he pulled a stool out and sat at the kitchen counter. “I guess I’m worried I wont be respected in the position if people know.” He answered quietly.
“We respect you because you are smart and motivated, not because we thought you were straight.” James reminded him.
“I know it seems silly, certainly saying it out loud makes me feel silly.”
“Do you like him?” James asked.
“I do.” Jonathan confirmed.
“Then who cares what everyone else thinks?”
“What if others don’t feel the same way?” Jonathan asked.
“And what if there are others staying single because they are attracted to the same s*x and to afraid to tell anyone? What is you could lead the change there like you have on so many other areas?” James asked.
Jonathan smiled.
“You know, we are long lived and so we forget sometimes that doesn’t make us immortal. We all know what’s coming and we all know we may not survive. We should be grabbing every moment of happiness we can.” James shrugged.
“And that’s why you’re Alpha.” Jonathan quipped.
“I’m only Alpha because I’m better known, and I already bore a leadership position. It could have just as easily been you.” James replied. “Do your parents know?”
Jonathan shook his head. “My father is a warrior. No way he is going to accept this.”
“And you’re an only child, aren’t you?” James asked.
Jonathan nodded.
“I could come with you when you tell them. Offer is on the table, today, tomorrow, ten years from now. No pressure.” James said as he plated up the bacon and eggs. “You’re a good man, gay, straight or otherwise. I don’t know why the Goddess chose this for you but I can tell you she always has her reasons.”
“Thankyou.” Jonathan began as he tucked into his breakfast. “Being an only child means the responsibility of grandchildren falls to me. My mum is going to be heartbroken. Can’t see them being real happy about his being a vampire either.”
“Well, there’s vampires and then there’s the Young Vampires. Maybe ease them in by taking them on a tour to see what the Vamps do. Heck, anyone not impressed with that isn’t worth worrying about.” James suggested.
A knock on the door stopped the conversation in its tracks.
Jonathan’s mother walked in and straight up to him to kiss his cheek.
“I was missing you and thought you may need your washing done.” She smiled.
“You’re amazing Ma.” Jonathan smiled back.
“Why don’t you spend the day with us today? We were just about to head down to see the Young Vamps. Have you seen the work they do?” James asked politely.
“Well no I haven’t. Is it safe?” Jonathans mother asked.
“Rosalie, would I take you somewhere unsafe after that amazing dinner you cooked us Sunday night? I was going to offer myself up to be adopted.” James winked at her.
“Well, if its ok with you I would love that!” Rosalie smiled. “We are just so incredibly proud of Jonathan. Who would have ever believed a warriors son would become a ranked member of the pack, living in the Alphas house.”
James stopped and looked at Rosalie for a moment. It occurred to him for the first time that the pack measured success differently than the ranked members did.
“Rosalie, have you met Heath and Nova?” James asked.
“No, I haven’t.” Rosalie smiled.
“They are the Beta and Delta respectively of the Village. Neither comes from a ranked family. Actually, neither do Will and I.”
“I did not know that.” Rosalie responded.
“And Todd and Liam ran this pack as Alpha and Beta for ten years without knowing their heritage.” Jonathan added.
“Because we are not a traditional pack, we do try to give people opportunities based on their merit and that is something Jonathan has plenty of.” James continued.
“Come on, let’s get going.” Jonathan said, looking at his watch. “We have a pretty full day ahead of us.”
“I’ll just put these dishes in the dishwasher.” Rosalie fussed as the boys finished their juice.
They went outside and got into James’s car. Jonathan had been using Todd’s car since he had left, and it still felt surreal to him. He had grown up idolising Todd.
They arrived at the Young Vampires Operation Centre and Jonathan scanned his hand to unlock the door. They walked inside to the main command room.
“Hey Mace, how’s the shop going?” James asked as Macey turned around in her seat.
“Sweet as, we’re getting people coming in from the town now. Extending the range to include bags and shoes soon.” Macey declared proudly.
“Oh, is that the shop that only opens at night?” Rosalie asked.
“It is.” Macey smiled.
“I keep meaning to check it out.” Rosalie smiled.
“Well, you are most welcome.” Macey smiled.
“Sorry guys, this is my mum, Rosalie.” Jonathan said, introducing them. “This is Macey and Patrick.”
“It’s lovely to meet you.” Patrick smiled, giving her a hug.
“Ohh, thankyou.” Rosalie looked taken aback.
“Not what you expected?” Macey asked.
“No, if I’m being honest.” Rosalie confessed.
“We were turned at the weaker end of things. No one knows for sure what happened but as the vampires began to turn en masse we became less violent. We eat food, although we do need blood to keep going but we can survive fine on animal blood.” Macey shrugged.
“Am I allowed to ask what all of this is?” Rosalie asked, looking at the screens.
“Sure.” Patrick smiled, pulling up a seat. Macey and Patrick began to explain what they did, showing her the various screens they worked with.
“I’m just going to go say hi to Jay.” Jonathan called out as he walked down the hallway towards their rooms. James smiled.
He arrived at Jays bedroom door and knocked quietly.
“Yeah.” Jay called out sleepily.
Jonathan opened the door and slipped inside, closing it behind him.
“Hey.” Jay smiled as he realised who it was. Jonathan went and sat on Jays bed.
“I thought I would just warn you my mother is here. James idea.” Jonathan shrugged.
“James knows?” Jay asked.
“Is that ok?” Jonathan asked, suddenly worried he had done the wrong thing.
“Of course its ok.” Jay said, putting his hand on Jonathan’s leg. “Why’s your mum here?”
“James thought maybe it might help us tell people if my mum met you first.” Jonathan shrugged.
“Are you ready for that, cos no one is going to push you.” Jay asked.
“You are so important to me, I want people to know that. I was just worried about what people would think, what my parents would think, since I’m a Beta. James and I spoke this morning and he helped me understand that who I choose to be with shouldn’t reflect on what I am capable of. I earned this position.” Jonathan shrugged.
“I’m proud of you.” Jay said as he squeezed Jonathan’s thigh. “But I can see you’re very nervous, so why don’t we just hang out and let your mum find her peace with who we are first. We are used to having to do that with your people.” Jay smiled.
Jonathan nodded and stood up so Jay could stand up also.
“Hey.” Jay murmured, leaning in to kiss Jonathan.
“Hey.” Jonathan replied, kissing him back.
“Give me five ok, I’ll have a quick shower and I’ll be out.”
Jonathan nodded and left the room. When he returned Patrick was teaching his mother how to zoom in to locations while Macey and James debriefed.
“Jonathan, this is incredible.” His mother cried as she practised zooming in to several locations around the world. “I can see the Great Wall of China!”
Jonathan smiled as he watched his mother and Patrick making their way around the world on the screen.
“Jay.” James called out as Jay walked in the room.
“Ahh, now here is the man behind this all. Rosalie, meet Jay.” Patrick introduced them.
“Very nice to meet you ma’am.” Jay smiled as he extended his hand.
“It’s nice to meet you too Jay.” Rosalie replied, shaking his hand. “This is nothing short of amazing.”
“Thankyou, we have been incredibly fortunate to have had the communities support us with all of this. As you can see, no money was spared. Your councils care very much for your safety.” Jay relied.
“Patrick said you write all the programs for this.” Rosalie continued.
“I was in IT before I was turned. Lots of different areas but I did a lot of app and program writing and production. I had intended to do something similar to this when I happened to find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Jay shrugged.
“I’m so sorry for what you have been through.” Rosalie said, squeezing Jays arm.
“It’s had it’s benefits.” Jay smiled, glancing at Jonathan.
“I’m glad you can see the bright side.” Rosalie smiled.
“Well, I have all the information I need for now. Are you both ready to leave?” James asked Jonathan and Rosalie.
“Oh, I think I’ve taken up enough of their time. Thankyou for showing me what you do, it truly is incredible. You know, you should come over for dinner Sunday night. I mean, if you aren’t busy.” Rosalie offered.
“That sounds amazing.” Macey smiled, hugging Rosalie.
“I’m in!” Patrick agreed.
“That would be wonderful.” Jay added.
“You know me Rosalie, I could never say no to your cooking.” James replied.
“Well then it’s settled. I will see you Sunday at 8pm.”
