He spent his days carousing and indulging in food and drink, naturally getting into fights and brawls due to his youthful recklessness. Jacob's father was a very upstanding person and also a military veteran. He disliked that Jacob was idling his days away. One day, they got into another argument. Jacob's father said, "You had the chance to make something of yourself in the military, instead of following Hale and Paddy around acting like leaders. Now look at you, discharged early, and even after coming back, you're not working properly. Every day you're just hanging around, doing nothing!" As it turned out, Jacob had always been a troublemaker since he was young, which led his family to send him to the army. A submarine soldier, he had fought in two battles, but he became a negative example within his troop. The submarine captain used Jacob as a cautionary tale, criticizing him in front of all the soldiers. This grudge stayed with Jacob who, in just a couple of days, ambushed the captain as he was heading to the bathroom. Jacob dragged him inside, covered his head, yanked his hair, and beat him. Jacob was only 21 years old at the time! The consequences of this altercation were as one might expect: he was discharged and sent back home, ending his military service early. That surely is the behavior of a hooligan, isn't it? Being sent back when he was around 22 years old, he began to walk down the path towards society. His elderly father tried to help him and found him a civil service job as an ordinary clerk. However, Jacob couldn't settle down to work and spent his days outside, making many friends. Time swiftly moved on to 1990, and it had been four or five years since Jacob's discharge, but his skills had not diminished because those who had served in the military, especially in the earlier years, were well known for their good physical condition and abilities. At that time, Jacob was just twenty-seven years old, in the prime of his youth, full of vigor. Not happy with his father’s words, he retorted, “Dad, why are you always displeased with me? If you keep this up, I might just give up the civil service job and not come back at all!” Upon hearing this, the old man said, “You little rascal, whether you come back or not is up to you. Better yet, just get out right now, and do it quickly.” On the evening of January 19, 1990, that's exactly what happened – Jacob was once again driven out of the family home. As he was leaving, he heard someone calling from behind, “Jacob, Jacob!” He turned around to see Hale, a comrade who had been discharged from the military with him and also happened to be Jacob’s best friend. Approaching, Hale asked, “Bro, where are you off to?” Jacob responded, “I don’t even know where to go!” Hale said, “You don’t know where to go? Well, my good friend Henry's girlfriend has come back and wants to treat us to dinner. Why don’t you come along? I specifically came to find you.” Jacob, unfamiliar with Henry, hesitated and said, "Sorry,I'm not going..." Hale insisted, “There’s nothing to worry about. Let's go! It's been a long time since we all gathered. Paddy will be there too. Let’s get together.” And so, Jacob went with Hale to the Henderson Hotel for dinner. At that time, there were seven men and four women at the table. Over the course of more than an hour at the meal, about seven or eight people came over to toast with Jacob. The four girls whispered among themselves, “What does Jacob do for a living? Why are so many people toasting with him?” And one added, "You know, I hadn't really noticed him since he kept quiet, but now that I look at him, with his big eyes, double eyelids, and a dimple, he’s quite attractive indeed." Among the four girls, one was Henry's so-called girlfriend, named Emma. Emma was quite captivating herself, standing over 1.7 meters tall with a particularly dignified air and a well-proportioned figure that drew people's admiration. At the time, Emma was 32, five years older than Jacob. Emma also came over to have a drink with Jacob. "Bro, I noticed you're not very talkative. You blush every time you raise your head and see us. Come on, let's have a drink." "No, sister, maybe it's because it's the first meeting and I'm not very familiar yet. I'll finish my drink; here goes." "It's unfamiliar at first, but familiar with time. Let's get together more often in the future. Maybe one day you can come to visit us in Guangzhou. Come on, let's drink again." Then Hale spoke up, "Emma, if you don't mind treating me like a brother, I want to tell you the truth. In our area, there's no one who doesn't know Jacob; Jacob is the boss! Back in the day, the bad boy type was in vogue, especially someone like Jacob who was not only handsome but also had that youthful energy. It turns out these girls had taken a liking to Jacob at first sight, including Emma. The more she looked at him, the more interested she became, the more she found herself attracted to him. After that, Emma kept engaging Jacob in conversation, and though Jacob tried to keep his distance, it was difficult. The young lady enjoyed talking to him. What could he do? Some people are just born to be the center of attention; their charisma can't be hidden wherever they go. Upon seeing this, Henry was displeased on the spot. The dinner was supposed to feature Henry as the main attraction, but Jacob had stolen all the limelight. Initially, when a few people came over to toast and settled the bill for the meal, Henry felt suffocated with irritation. And now, seeing the object of his affections exchanging glances with Jacob, he definitely had a bitter taste in his mouth. Henry said, "I think this round of drinks is over. I'll take everyone to the Fever nightclub to have some fun." And so, the group of eleven made their way to the Fever nightclub. Actually, Jacob had no desire to attend, and upon arriving, he sat on the far edge to avoid contact with the others, not wanting to cause any upset. Emma and the three girls agreed to invite Jacob over for a drink. Seeing this, Henry grew upset again and came over to Jacob, saying, "I'm the one who's treating; what's the meaning of this? Maybe you should just go home." As soon as Henry finished speaking, Hale and Paddy didn't accept this; they said, "We came here with Jacob, so we'll leave together." As the three of them were getting up and putting on their clothes, Emma, holding a glass of wine, grabbed Jacob and said, "Don't leave, let's have a drink together." But Jacob, not noticing his big brother, walked forward, and Emma stumbled, causing the wine in her hand to spill. In an unfortunate twist, Emma's wine spilled right onto the face of James, the men of Bard. Bard is the notorious boss of the South Peninsula area. This same splash of wine would trigger a fight between Jacob and the boss Bard and lead to Jacob's departure from Johannesburg. Emma hurriedly apologized, "Bro, I'm really sorry. I was just getting dressed, didn't hold my glass firmly, and accidentally splashed it on you. I apologize, truly sorry." But James was no gentleman. He ogled Emma from head to toe with lecherous eyes, as though she was prey. "Just saying sorry isn't enough," he said as he stood up and approached Emma. "Come on over to my table; keep me company drinking tonight, and your apology will be accepted." Saying this, he reached out and grabbed Emma. Emma's high heels slipped, and she fell backward right into James's arms. Terrified, Emma turned to Henry for help. At that moment, Henry was also panicking, as he was inherently a person who avoided confrontation, as meek as a mouse. Yet even one as timid as Henry knew that sometimes you have to face the situation head-on. Seeing what was happening, Henry quickly said, "Big Brother, please don't start a fight, she's my girlfriend." But would someone like James listen? James was a scourge through and through. Without another word, he slapped Henry right across the face. "Get lost, scram now! Come closer, and I'll beat the hell out of you," he barked, shoving Henry aside. Rendered silent and humiliated, Henry hugged his swollen face in a corner, not daring to utter another word. In those days, if a thug took a liking to a girl, he'd just whisk her away, clasping necks and wrists. Why did those girls look up to the underworld, idolizing these so-called gangsters? Because society back then was chaotic and turbulent, and they, too, were seeking a sense of security. Henry was petrified and couldn't speak. At the crucial moment, Jacob had to step in, pulling Emma behind him, and, as Paddy handed him a glass of wine, he said to James, "I offer an apology on behalf of my friend. Either I drink this glass, or you can throw it in my face. Whatever helps you vent your anger, you decide!" This was a gesture known in the underworld to indicate that he was taking any humiliation without retaliation—suggesting if they could clink glasses and drink, they could be friends instead. James, hearing this and thinking he wanted to play the game of the underworld, didn't realize who he was dealing with and boasted, "Who are you mingling with? Maybe I should inquire about your background!" Jacob clarified that he wasn't part of any group; these were his friends. Satisfied with his answer, James took Jacob's glass and poured the wine over Jacob's head. "Alright, buddy," Jacob said, "as long as you've had your fill, can we go now?" "Don't think this is simple, buddy!" James blurted, suddenly grabbing an empty bottle and smashing it down onto Jacob's head. He then turned to his five underlings and barked, "Beat him up!" Caught completely off-guard, no one could react in time, and James, now truly enraged, quickly turned around to shield Emma behind him. At this point, Hale and Paddy were both frantic, standing one to each side of Jacob. "What's happening? Playing dirty, are you?"
