Katie sat alone at lunch the following day. When she had finally managed to get hold of Haley, she’d found out her best friend was feeling unwell and so was taking a day or two off Sixth Form. She had been too ill to talk about the food fight incident, running to the bathroom to retch and dropping her phone.   It sucked sitting alone, but Katie hadn’t conversed with any of the people on her course long enough to make friends to sit with. They seemed to avoid her, maybe having preconceived ideas about her, down to her image or her reputation. It might be possible to break down these barriers, but getting to the conversation stage was difficult enough, and she’d put it off for too long it would seem odd to start talking to them now.   She wasn’t alone for long.
