Episode one: Welcome to ward seven
Halberd Psychiatric Hospital didn’t advertise Ward Seven. The upper floors were sterile, bright, and meant for public comfort. But far below the humming lights, beneath the basement and the morgue, behind a biometric lock disguised as a supply closet — Ward Seven pulsed like a hidden heart.
It wasn’t on any blueprint.
Dr. Elias Crane created it himself.
To the board, Elias was a miracle worker — a soft-spoken genius who revived hopeless minds. He’d published volumes on mental deterioration, trauma identity disintegration, and neural silence. But Elias wasn’t interested in healing. His obsession was deeper.
He wanted to witness the *fracture* — the exact moment when the human psyche snaps like a bone under pressure.
That’s what the Quiet Room was for.
It was Elias’s theater.
A room without time, sound, or mirrors. Just four walls, a single ceiling vent, and an all-seeing camera hidden in the corner. Patients placed inside were stripped of all stimuli. No books. No food. No visitors. No sound. Just their mind — and the whispering vacuum of nothing.
Thirty-two patients had entered The Quiet Room under Elias's research. Each time, their descent was unique. Some laughed hysterically for days. Others collapsed into catatonia. One scratched the word "hollow" into her chest with her fingernails before Elias intervened.
But then came *Mara Ellin*.
She wasn’t selected randomly. Elias had requested her.
A 34-year-old psychologist turned patient. Once a respected therapist, she’d tried to kill herself and her husband in a fire. He’d died. She survived. Since her commitment, she hadn’t spoken a word.
Elias read her case file five times. Something in her eyes, even in photos, unsettled him.
*She was too calm.*
No fits, no resistance, no fear. Just silence and a strange half-smile.
On January 14th, Elias personally escorted her down to Ward Seven. She followed without question. As she stepped into the Quiet Room, she turned slightly and looked up at him — not pleading, not afraid.
Almost... *curious*.
“Begin observation,” Elias told the system.

*Day 1:* Mara stood in the center of the room, eyes closed.
*Day 3:* She sat cross-legged, gazing up into the camera, expressionless.
*Day 5:* She began smiling. Not mockingly. Not friendly. Just fixed. Gentle. Too gentle.
*Day 7:* She started whispering. Her lips moved for hours. No audio came through.
*Day 9:* She mouthed something. Elias rewound the tape again and again. He couldn’t tell what it was.
*Day 10:* She looked straight into the lens and mouthed it again — slowly:
*“Now you.”*
That night, the video feed cut off. Power in Ward Seven flickered.
Technicians blamed a hardware fault. But Elias didn’t wait.
He walked into the Quiet Room at 2:16 a.m.
The security system logged his entry.
*It never logged his exit.*
Inside, the room was cold. Not unnaturally so — just enough to unsettle. He stepped inside. The door closed automatically behind him with its usual hydraulic hiss.
Mara was gone.
No marks. No blood. No sign she’d ever been there.
Just the chair in the center, facing the corner.
Elias walked around it slowly. It was empty.
Then he heard something behind him.
He turned sharply.
Nothing.
He exhaled, then reached for the emergency call panel by the door. It didn’t respond.
He pressed again. Nothing.
That’s when he saw it — a shadow behind the mirrored observation glass.
*It was his own reflection… smiling.*
He stepped closer. The reflection blinked — but he hadn’t.
Then a voice whispered from the vent above:
*“Now you’re the patient.”*
Everything went black.

When staff found the room the next morning, Elias was sitting in the chair, arms limp at his sides, eyes wide open — staring directly into the camera.
He didn’t speak for days.
When he did, he repeated the same thing over and over in a low murmur:
*“She opened the door. She opened the door. She opened the door.”*
Security logs showed Mara had never been recorded leaving the facility. In fact, the logs showed no record of her ever existing.
But each night since, someone activates the Quiet Room camera remotely — watching.
And in the static, sometimes, you can see a faint figure in the corner.
Smiling.
