**Season 3, Episode 5: "The Ripple Effect"**
Hannah stared at the screen of her phone long after she ended the call with Ryan. The vibrations of the conversation still buzzed in her chest, the weight of his words lingering like smoke in the air. *“I’ve changed. I’m trying to fix what I broke.”* His voice echoed in her ears, the plea for her to see him as someone different, someone redeemed.
But for Hannah, it wasn’t that simple. No matter how much Ryan claimed to have changed, no matter how many promises he made, the truth was that she had already given him the chance to prove himself—and he had failed her. The betrayal, the lies, the constant pushing and pulling—those were things she could never forget. She had spent so long piecing her life back together after their marriage ended that the idea of reopening that chapter made her feel raw, exposed.
She knew, deep down, that she had to let go. But Ryan’s voice had stirred up more than just old memories; it had awakened doubts she had buried beneath the surface. *Was she really ready to move on completely?* Was she sure she wanted to close the door on him for good, or was she just holding onto something that had already died?
“*God,*” she muttered to herself, collapsing onto the couch. The weight of it all was almost too much to bear. But she couldn’t ignore the other truth that was just as clear: she was in a relationship now—with Sam. And Sam didn’t deserve this.

**Later that evening, Sam knocked gently on Hannah’s door.**
He had texted earlier, asking if she wanted to go out for dinner, but she had declined. She hadn’t told him about the call with Ryan, about the emotions that had come rushing back. She didn’t want to burden him with the messiness of her past—not when they had been doing so well, not when she was finally starting to feel like herself again.
But as Sam’s presence filled her apartment, the space between them felt heavier than usual. He stepped inside, his eyes scanning her face with the usual tenderness, but there was something in his expression—a quiet concern—that told her he could sense something was off.
“Hey,” he said softly, stepping closer. “You alright?”
Hannah hesitated, biting her lip as the weight of everything settled on her shoulders. She hadn’t wanted to bring Ryan up, but she couldn’t ignore it anymore. Sam deserved to know the truth, even if it wasn’t pretty.
“I… had a call from Ryan today,” she said, her voice trembling slightly.
Sam’s expression tightened, a flicker of tension in his jaw, but he didn’t interrupt. He simply nodded, his eyes soft, waiting for her to continue.
“I—I don’t know what to do with it,” Hannah admitted, her voice shaking now. “He… he said he’s changed. That he’s trying to fix everything he broke. He said that he needed me to understand that.”
Sam’s gaze darkened, a shadow crossing his features. “Hannah, you don’t have to explain yourself to him. You don’t owe him anything.”
“I know,” she said quickly, her hands fidgeting in her lap. “I *know*, but… part of me still wants to believe him. Part of me still wants to believe that it could be different—that things could have been different.”
There was a long, tense pause. Sam’s face softened, and he stepped forward, sitting beside her on the couch. He didn’t try to offer easy answers or tell her to stop thinking about Ryan. Instead, he did what he always did best—he simply *listened.*
“I get it, you know,” Sam said quietly. “It’s hard to move on from someone who was such a big part of your life. And I’m not expecting you to forget about him or just shut off your feelings. But you *do* deserve more than what he gave you. You deserve someone who *chooses* you every single day—not someone who leaves you, and then when they feel like it, comes back and asks for another chance.”
Hannah swallowed hard, feeling the sting of his words but also the truth in them. Sam wasn’t wrong. Ryan hadn’t chosen her. He had hurt her, broken promises, and walked away, leaving her to pick up the pieces. And now, years later, he was asking her to believe that everything was different.
But it wasn’t just Ryan’s past that Hannah had to wrestle with. It was the fact that she wasn’t sure if she was fully ready to let someone else in. The fear, the doubt—it still lingered in the corners of her heart. And that fear was so much harder to face when it involved *someone* like Sam—someone who had been nothing but patient, kind, and steady with her.
“I want to be with you, Sam,” she whispered, the weight of her own words pressing down on her chest. “But sometimes, I’m so scared of losing myself again. I’m scared of repeating the same mistakes.”
Sam’s hand found hers, his fingers gently wrapping around hers in a comforting hold. “You won’t lose yourself with me, Hannah. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. And I’m not asking you to fix everything overnight. I just want you to be honest with me—*with yourself*—and let me in.”
Her breath hitched in her throat. She had wanted to say this for so long, but the words had always seemed so hard to find. *She wanted him. She wanted Sam. But what if she wasn’t enough? What if she couldn’t give him what he deserved?*
“I just don’t know how to *not* be afraid,” she admitted.
Sam squeezed her hand, his voice gentle but firm. “That’s okay. I’m not asking you to not be afraid. I’m just asking you to let me be part of the journey, to face the fear together.”
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the quiet ticking of the clock on the wall, and the soft rustle of the wind outside her window. Hannah closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts.
*Maybe it was time to stop running from her feelings. Maybe it was time to stop holding onto a past that had already slipped through her fingers.*
When she opened her eyes again, Sam was still there, waiting. And in that moment, she knew that despite the fear, despite the lingering doubts, she was ready to choose him. She was ready to let go of Ryan, once and for all, and trust that Sam was the one who would be there to catch her if she fell.
“I’m ready,” she said softly, her voice steady now. “I’m ready to move forward—with you.”
