Chapter 1: The World Inherited
The wind howled through the flimsy walls of the house, like the sigh of the desolate countryside. The home of the young boy stood isolated among the fields, with its walls leaning and its rusted tin roof. During the rainy season, drops of water trickled through holes in the roof, falling onto the cold earthen floor, adding to the chill of the poverty-stricken environment. The damp, heavy air inside only amplified the suffering of those living there. The boy's name was Minh, only twelve years old, but his eyes already bore the marks of premature maturity. Minh lived with his parents and his elderly grandparents, whose health had deteriorated over time. Minh's grandfather, once a strong farmer, was now a shadow of his former self. His body was frail and emaciated, and persistent coughing had left him increasingly weak each day. His grandmother, once a diligent woman, was now bedridden and unable to care for herself. In that cramped house, the air was often filled with heavy sighs. Every day, Minh had to wake up at the c***k of dawn, rising from the tiny bed he shared with his grandparents. The old, creaky bed groaned with every movement Minh made. He quietly gathered his belongings, preparing for a new day he knew would be fraught with challenges and difficulties. Minh's parents, though still young, lacked the strength and spirit to earn a living. His father had once worked as a construction laborer, but an accident had left him unable to perform heavy tasks. His hands were now swollen and painful, making even the simplest tasks difficult. His mother, having lost her job at a factory, tried to make ends meet by doing odd jobs, from selling vegetables at the market to sewing clothes. But the work was irregular, and the money barely sufficed for their daily needs. Minh gazed up at the gray, overcast sky, his heart heavy. He knew today, like every other day, would offer no respite. Minh quietly stepped out of the house, his small feet familiar with the rocky path leading to school. But before reaching class, Minh had to complete his morning task: delivering milk and bread to Mrs. Lân, an elderly woman living alone at the end of the village. This job provided Minh with a few small coins, enough to buy some essential school supplies or help his mother purchase extra vegetables. Though modest, it was the only way Minh could contribute to the family. Minh knew that no matter how hard he tried, he could not change the harsh reality of his family's situation. But he had no other choice but to keep moving forward, step by step, even if each step was heavy and painful. As Minh returned home after school, darkness had begun to fall. His mother was sitting by the fire, her frail hands stirring a pot of thin porridge. The faint aroma of cooking rice did little to mask the poverty in the kitchen. She looked up, offering a weak smile as Minh walked in. "You're back already? Another long day, isn't it?" Her voice was warm but filled with exhaustion. Minh approached and looked into the pot of porridge. "Yes, today the teacher praised me for doing well in class. But the kids at school still laugh at me because of my old, tattered clothes. I... I wish we could live better." His mother placed a hand on his shoulder, her eyes full of love but also sadness. "I know, Minh. Your father and I wish the same. But life is... not easy, and we have to accept it. Just remember, no matter how difficult it gets, you must always strive to study. Only knowledge can help you escape this poverty." Minh nodded, struggling to hold back his emotions. He understood that his mother was trying to give him hope, but sometimes hope felt like just another burden he had to carry. Dinner was eaten in silence. Minh's father sat beside his grandfather, quietly helping him take spoonfuls of porridge. Grandpa said nothing, only looked at Minh with cloudy eyes, as if he wanted to speak but couldn't. Minh's heart ached every time he saw his grandparents growing weaker. He felt helpless and pained. The whole family knew that Grandpa and Grandma's time was limited, but there was nothing more they could do to prolong their days. After dinner, Minh sat by his desk, the dim light from an oil lamp casting shadows on the worn-out pages of his books. Minh knew he couldn’t afford to slack off in his studies, even though today had left him exhausted. He struggled to absorb every word and formula, hoping that they would be the key to unlocking a better future away from poverty. But Minh’s eyes grew heavy, the words on the page blurring together. He thought about the future, a future that he wasn’t sure would be any better. Would studying really bring him and his family a better life? Or was it just a distant dream, an illusion he was striving for but could never quite reach? His mother entered the room, looking at him with concern. "You should go to bed early. You need to wake up early for school and work tomorrow. Don’t push yourself too hard, Minh." Minh shook his head, trying to keep his voice steady. "I’m fine, Mom. I need to study. I don’t want to miss any opportunity." His mother looked at him for a long moment, then sighed and left the room. Minh remained, continuing to study until his eyes could no longer stay open. He knew that life would never be easy, but he had no other choice but to keep moving forward, despite the countless obstacles. Minh lay down on his bed, his heart heavy with thoughts of the future and his family. He knew he needed to be strong, not just for himself but for his loved ones. But sometimes, the weight of that burden made him feel like just a small, fragile child in a vast, unforgiving world. In the darkness, Minh closed his eyes, listening to the wind outside still howling through the gaps in the door. He silently prayed that one day, his family's life would improve, and he would no longer have to live in daily fear and worry. But deep down, Minh knew that the journey ahead was long and fraught with challenges, and he had to prepare for whatever lay ahead.
