Chapter 15: Dark Days

As winter approached, the air grew increasingly cold. Minh's family faced new difficulties as temperatures dropped and living costs rose. Their small house was inadequate for keeping warm during the winter, and the freezing nights became more challenging than ever.

That morning, Minh woke up very early. However, the air inside the house was still cold and damp. Minh started preparing breakfast, trying to make things as warm as possible. His mother remained in bed, her face pale from the cold. Grandpa and Grandma also couldn’t sleep well in these conditions.

“Mom, I’ve prepared breakfast. Are you feeling any better?” Minh asked with concern.

His mother opened her eyes and managed a weak smile. “Thank you, dear. I’m still quite cold, but you’ve done a great job. You should eat breakfast first.”

Minh nodded, trying to stay positive. “I’ll do my best to make everyone feel better.”

Breakfast was a simple meal of rice and some vegetable soup. Although it was not elaborate, the love in each dish made the meal warmer. As the family sat together at the table, Minh felt a sense of unity and affection in these moments.

“Mom, Grandpa, I’ll go to school and then work at the store. I’ll try to work hard to help the family,” Minh said with determination.

His mother smiled weakly. “You are always the greatest support for our family. We’ll get through this hardship together.”

That day, Minh went to school in the bitter cold. Even though he was dressed warmly, the chill outside made him feel as if his body was freezing. The thin layers of snow on the ground made everything slippery and difficult to navigate.

During class, Minh found it hard to concentrate. Other kids chatted happily, but Minh just wanted to stay warm and get through the school day as quickly as possible. The worried looks from his friends made him feel grateful, but he didn’t want to trouble them with his own difficulties.

“Minh, are you okay? You don’t look so well,” Hương asked, concern evident in her voice.

Minh smiled, trying to maintain composure. “I’m just a bit cold. It’s nothing.”

Hương wasn’t completely reassured. “If you need anything, just let me know. Don’t hesitate.”

Minh appreciated the encouragement from friends, but he didn’t want to be a burden. He knew he had to face this hardship on his own.

When the school bell rang to signal the end of classes, Minh felt relieved. He hurried back to the store, where he could earn some extra income to help his family. However, even while working, the cold remained a significant challenge. Minh worked hard to earn enough money, but it became more difficult in the harsh weather conditions.

Returning home at the end of the day, Minh felt his body exhausted and chilled. His mother had prepared a simple but warm dinner. The family gathered around the table; despite the modest meal, the love and connection of the family made everything more meaningful.

“You worked very hard today. Thank you for always being here for the family,” his mother said with pride.

Minh felt a deep emotional response hearing his mother’s words. “I just want to help the family get through these tough times. We’ll overcome every challenge together.”

After dinner, Minh went back to his room to study. The cold still made the room feel stuffy, but Minh didn’t give up. He needed to complete his assignments and prepare for the upcoming exams. On long nights, as the cold seeped into every layer of his blanket, Minh felt as though everything was against him.

When the night grew late, Minh felt his body beginning to give out. His mother and grandfather had gone to bed, but Minh continued to sit at his desk, trying to finish his work. The difficulties in life couldn’t make Minh abandon his dreams. His belief in his family and his determination were the main sources of motivation that helped him face every challenge.

The next morning, as Minh woke up, the sky was still cold and gloomy. He felt exhausted but knew he couldn’t stop. Minh continued with his work and studies, despite the ongoing difficulties.

The school day and work at the store continued with tension and fatigue. Minh felt that each day was a new challenge, but he didn’t give up. Despite feeling cold and tired, Minh always held onto the belief that every effort would be rewarded.

When he returned home at the end of the day, Minh felt warmth in the moments spent with his family. No matter how harsh life was, the bond and love of the family were the most important things.

“You’ve had a tough day. Thank you for working hard and always being here for the family,” his mother said, her eyes full of pride and love.

Minh smiled, feeling warmth in his heart. “We’ll get through all the difficulties together. As long as we maintain our faith and unity, everything will get better.”

On long nights, as the cold wind blew through the roof and the sky grew quiet, Minh felt that no hardship or challenge could make him give up. His faith in his family and determination were the driving forces that kept Minh from ever surrendering.

No matter how harsh life became, Minh believed that with perseverance and determination, he would overcome every challenge. And one day, Minh would not only help his family overcome their difficulties but also achieve his own dreams, making every sacrifice and hardship worthwhile.
