What an Ugly day!
Cassy stepped out of her apartment building and was immediately hit by the humid and oppressive heat of the New Jersey summer. She looked up at the clear blue sky, squinting slightly as the sun bore down on her. It was the kind of day where you could practically see the heat waves rising from the pavement. She glanced at her watch and saw that she had plenty of time before her next class at Princeton University.
As she started walking towards the diner, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease settle in her stomach. It was like an impending sense of doom that she couldn't shake off. Maybe it was just the heat getting to her. She took a deep breath and shook her head, trying to clear her mind.
As she walked, she noticed the usual hustle and bustle of the streets. Cars honking, people shouting, and the occasional siren in the distance. She passed by rows of buildings with different architectures, some of them tall and modern, while others were old and run-down. She couldn't help but wonder about the stories these buildings held.
As she reached the diner, she could see the neon lights flickering, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hit her. The place was crowded as usual, with people sitting inside and outside, enjoying their breakfast. She walked in and was greeted by the sounds of clinking dishes and chattering customers. She spotted a free booth in the corner and quickly made her way there.
As she sat down, she took in the surroundings. The walls were lined with vintage posters, and the furniture had a retro feel to it. The waitresses were dressed in pastel-colored uniforms, and the cook was busy in the open kitchen, flipping pancakes on the griddle.
Cassy glanced at the menu and decided on her usual order, a cup of coffee, and a blueberry muffin. She looked up and saw her favorite waitress, Maria, walking towards her. Maria was a middle-aged woman with a warm smile and a friendly demeanor. She had been working at the diner for as long as Cassy could remember.
"Hey there, Cassy! The usual?" Maria asked with a smile.
Cassy nodded, returning the smile. "Yes, please. How's your day going?"
Maria shrugged. "Same old, same old. Busy as usual. But it's always good to see you here, sweetie. How's college treating you?"
Cassy sighed. "It's been hectic. Lots of assignments and readings. But I'm managing."
As she waited for her order, she couldn't help but think about her mom. She had always been her rock, her support system. Her mom had worked hard to raise her on her own, and Cassy was determined to make her proud. She knew she had to do well in college and get a good job so she could provide for her mom.
As her order arrived, she thanked Maria and dug into her muffin. The sweetness of the blueberries and the warmth of the coffee were comforting. She took a deep breath and tried to push away the uneasy feeling that had been nagging at her all morning.
But as she looked around the diner, she couldn't help but feel like something was off. It was like a nagging feeling at the back of her mind that she couldn't quite put her finger on. She looked out the window and noticed that the sky had started to darken. She could hear the distant rumble of thunder, and a bolt of lightning lit up the sky.
Cassy finished her coffee and muffin, paid her bill, and left the diner. As she stepped out, she could feel the wind picking up, and she knew that a storm was brewing. She hurried back to her apartment, hoping to beat the rain.
