THE INVITATIONS HAD read “You are invited to dinner at the home of Chris and Mickey,” giving the new address as the location. Of their friends, only four knew about the new house: George and Mike, because of the referral to their landscaper friends, and Tom and Noah, because Chris had given them the required notice of his intention to vacate the rental house.
The evening of the dinner their guests arrived in pairs; all of them were bearing housewarming gifts. When everyone was seated in the living room, drinks in their hands, Mickey said. “Would anyone like a tour of the house?”
