CHRIS SPENT THE next day visiting the employment departments of local hospitals and filling out applications. To his surprise, he received a callback from one of them the following day and went for an initial interview. Over the course of the next week, he had two more callbacks and returned to one hospital for a complete preemployment physical.
When Mickey returned home from work that day, he found Chris stretched out in the upstairs swing.
“What’s the matter, babe?” he said. “You look kind of worn out.”
“And so I am,” Chris said. “I had a preemployment physical at St. Vincent’s Medical Center today and, boy, was it thorough. They left no orifice unexplored and no stone unturned.”
“No stone unturned?”
Chris grabbed his balls.
“Oh, that.”
“Yes, that.”
