Chapter 6: Escape to the Country
Rick, it turned out, was quite a driver. He could be slow and careful, but when opportunity or circumstance required it, he could also drive like a demon.
Accordingly, he drove down the ramp to the exit gate with considerable efficiency. We encountered the door there, but luckily there was a special switch that he knew about that would allow the door to be winched manually.
He got a bit greasy doing that, but I had a cloth ready for him to wipe up. He was just getting back in when there came the sound of a crash from upstairs. Presumably the gang of three had bust open the door. For a moment we both froze. Then came the sound of a cry of outrage and a pistol shot. Rick laughed and gunned the engine.
