Chapter 12
It was a few hours before he finally arrived, she hadn’t even drank the coffee in front of her. She just kept running the spoon around the rim of it as the creamer had long been stirred in but her mind was going through a 100 different patterns and none of them dealt with this. She finally registered to something when she felt his warm hands wrap around hers as he made her finally stop and realize he was there.
“Eva….baby what happened to you,” he spoke as he noticed some patches of blood still on parts of her hands and wrists.
“It’s not mine….it’s Marcus,” she spoke as she looked up to him slightly.
“He’s dead,” she spoke as she slid her hands from his but he got up as he sat next to her as he grabbed her hands again.
“What happened,” he asked as he looked to her, she had acted weird before but this was on a whole different level for her.
He noticed the difference in her complexion and her facial features and he could tell something was seriously off with her, so he did the only thing he thought best. He said nothing more and just wrapped his arms around her, when he did she stiffened up in his arms. She didn’t even realize, how tightly she grabbed on to his arm as she felt him cringe slightly as he just hugged her harder. She wanted to cry, to scream, to do something but her mind was so numb from the pain of the headache and his holding her was the only calming thing at the moment.
After a while of him holding her, she looked up at him as she says, “Lets get out of here.”
“Alright,” he said as she slipped her coat on as he left a few bucks and tip on the table as he took her hand and he lead her out of the place.
He unlocked the door, she got in the car and he got in the drivers seat then shut the door. As soon as they were on the road, it was nothing but pure silence in the car between the both of them. He slid his hands over hers, when he did she didn’t look his way but she grasped his hand more. She didn’t want to hear words, or questions but for now this was helping her more than she knew.
When we finally got back into the city, she spoke, “I need to go too Angelo’s.”
“Angelo’s,” he spoke up.
“Yeah, Angelo’s,” she spoke.
“Ok,” he spoke.
It was another 45 minute drive to Angelo’s when we got back into the city. When we arrived, she had him park behind the pub as she got out and shut the door behind her. He watched her as she walked to the back entrance and went inside the pub.
Inside the pub, Angelo was walking into the back of the pub to his office.
“Eva,” Angelo spoke as he turned and looked to her.
When he looked at her, he didn’t have to be a mind reader to know she’s been through hell and was in more pain than he’s actual ever seen the girl in and this was just speaking mentally. He could ask, push to know if he wanted to but he knew the girl for years and he knew when not to push and when’s she ready to talk; she’ll talk when she’s ready….that’s how she always was.
“Geeta’s in here, she’s sound asleep,” he spoke.
“Ok,” she says as she follows him into his office, where she sees a little brunette one on his couch asleep.
“Marcus didn’t make it,” Angelo spoke as he walked over to his desk and pulled out a bottle of special made bourbon he breaks out during hard times.
He pours her a glass and then him, hands her one and takes the other. She sits back on the chair by the door as she holds the glass in her hands. Then she takes a sip and then she says, “I’m going to need you to get in touch with Dexter Erin’s and get her clean papers. I’ll keep her until I can find a safe home for her but the quicker the better for her safety.”
“No worries….you know I’ve always got you covered kid,” he says as he takes a sip from the glass; he looked to the glass than to her.
“God, she wasn’t kidding about Pandora’s box being opened,” she spoke in a whisper as she gulped the rest of the bourbon down in the glass, the fluid only stung her throat a second.
“Eva, whatever comes your way….I’m here for you,” Angelo spoke as he looked to her.
“Not this time,” she says as she felt like she was on the brink of breaking right there and than.
“Kiddo,” he spoke.
“Your family Angelo….what’s coming is bad….only thing I want you to do is get those papers and then we’re cutting ties,” she spoke as she looked up to him.
“Eva….girl….what are you….
“A lot of hell is coming my way, I don’t want you hurt Angelo,” she spoke.
“How bad we talking,” he spoke.
“I don’t know but it’s going to get worse before I can even gain my breath,” she say, “Before you try reading, promise me you won’t. The less you know Angelo the better off you are.”
“Eva,” he says as he gives her that look of pity.
“Not this time ok….I don’t know who or when will show but if anyone comes asking about me,” she says, “You don’t know me or have any idea who I am, ok?”
“Eva, I don’t think I can do that,” he spoke.
“Please Angelo tonight I can’t take anymore then I have,” she says, “Please….just do this for me.”
“Ok, I got you covered kid,” he spoke.
She gets up as she hands him the glass as she says, “Thank you. Text me, when her papers are ready.”
“Ok kid, whatever you need….I got ya,” he told her.
“Thank you,” she says as he takes the glass from her grasp as she walks over as she kneels down near the couch.
She slips her hands underneath the lil girl as she picks her up, wrapped up in the blanket. The lil girl wrapped her arms around her as she kept the blanket around the lil girl as she slept. She stands in the doorway before she left his office with her back to him as she says, “I don’t know if this is goodbye or I’ll see ya later. But I just want to say, you’ve helped me make some of my best memories. I’ll never forget that.”
Before he could grab her and say anything, she was already walking out of his office and out of the pub in the back. When she gets outside, Connor sees her and opens the door as gets out; standing by it.
“Back door,” she spoke as she walked over to the car as he walks around the back and opens the door on the passenger side.
She walks over as she tries to slip the girl’s arms from around her as she lays her across the backseat and she goes to get in the passenger side. He was going to say something but he knew their was a time and a reason with her so he kept his mouth shut. He figured they were hitting her house after this because in the car ride she was quiet again like before. When they got to her place, she didn’t wait for him or anything as she grabbed the girl from the backseat and took her into her house. She had a extra room, so she laid her down on the bed as the girl grabbed at the blanket slightly like she was looking for something but settled back in a hard sleep afterwards.
She sat there for a few moments on the bed as she looked to her as she says, “I wish I could tell you sorry and it washes away your sadness but it never will. You can carry you hatred for me for as long as you need but I promise you in the end, I’ll get revenge for you.”
She gets up from the bed and closes the door partially behind her as she walks out. She walks down the stairs and even past Connor without saying a thing as she rips her jacket off and tosses it on the couch. When she realizes, she still sees Marcus’s blood on her hands; she goes over to the sink and begins to scrub her hands with soap and a rough rag. She didn’t realize, she had scrubbed her hands so roughly that she was beginning to tear the skin from her hands. He grabbed her wrists and he yelled her name so roughly it finally got her attention.
She looked to her hands and stopped when she looked to him then she clung to his shirt as she buried her face against his chest. He never seen her act like this before, whatever happened to her up at her Aunt’s really did a number on her. Connor did the only thing he could, he held her tight to his frame to the point it would have been uncomfortable for others but it’s exactly what she needed.
Later on that night, after she grabbed a shower; he tended to her hands that were already beginning to heal. She was sitting up in bed with her knees pressed to her chest as she had her arms wrapped around them. He walked back into the bedroom with two bottles of beer, then he walks over as he sits on the edge of the bed as he hands her one.
She nods thanks as she places the the rim of the bottle to her lips and takes a drink.
“Baby….I’ve held my tongue long enough. What’s going on,” he asked as he took a drink from the bottle as he looked to her.
“All my life….I knew I was different….that never really mattered to me though,” she spoke as she looked off in the distance.
“Eva,” he spoke as he slid his fingertips through her hair as he looked to her.
“My whole life….is one big freak show of a movie,” she says, “And I’m just the pet science project that couldn’t be terminated at the end.”
“Eva….what are you going on about,” he asked her.
“Marcus is dead because of me….
“Marcus is dead but how,” he asked her.
“He knew when he found out certain information about me, it wouldn’t end well for him,” she says as she took another drink.
“Ok….not that I get what’s going on but whose the kid,” he asked her.
“Geeta….she’s Marcus’s daughter….because of the information he brought me I swore I would protect her,” she spoke.
“What information could be so important that he gets killed for,” he asked her, generally getting more and more concerned for her.
“A higher up family has put a bounty on my head….the rest of the higher family shifters know as well,” she told him.
“What the hell….it’s not like you killed one of them or something. I know you wouldn’t hurt someone unless you were protecting someone,” he spoke.
“It’s not what I did, it’s because I’m still alive,” she spoke as she looked at him.
“Because your alive,” he says, “Eva….baby….I’m getting completely confused here.”
“I…..I….wasn’t born….I was made in a f*****g lab,” she says, “A while back there was a disease that the higher born females were effected with and couldn’t produce any Alpha children. So a scientist came up with a idea to take eggs from the higher born females and genetically work on them to see if they could grow Alpha children to keep the lines going….the pure blood shifter lines.”
“Your kidding me right,” he spoke.
She shook her head “No” as she says, “I wasn’t born male, with silver or white fur but I was born female, black fur and I’m a Alpha too. The first female Alpha in any line, like my maker said “I’m a miracle that had to be saved.”
“Maker, miracle….baby….
“When my family came to see my development….when they saw I was a black wolf instead of white or silver or even a mix of the both….it disgusted them,” she says, “To make matters worse I was a female Alpha child, to add more salt into their wound. I was told to be terminated immediately and work to be started on another.”
“Jesus….Eva,” he spoke as he went to hold her but she backed further back against the headboard from his touch.
“Please don’t….hell to make matters worse, my maker….my doctor Frankenstein….was so close to me and I never even knew it,” she says, “Because my memories for the first few years of my life were scrubbed and I never had a f*****g clue. I always knew I was different but I never knew that I was that far off the reservation.”
“Close to you….,” he spoke and when it clicked he looked at her as she felt the burn of tears at the corner of her eyes as she was at the brink. “Leira….but how?”
“She use to be the lead specialist at Sub-Gen-X labs….I have no freaking clue where it is but it’s where I was made,” she spoke as she tightened the grip around her legs. “My head is pounding and hurts so bad, I just want to close my eyes and wake up like this has all been a bad dream but I know it’s not. I think that’s what makes this feel like pure hell right now.”
She couldn’t help as the tears she had been holding back, finally broke from there damn and drenched her cheeks. When she felt the wetness on her cheeks, she brought her hand up as she wiped a few more tears away. She couldn’t help but look to the tears from her cheek that dampened her hand.
“I’m crying….how much more weak can I be,” she spoke as he sat the beer on the table and grabbed hers doing the same with it.
He grabs her hand and pulls her down on the bed. Then he wraps his arms tightly around her and she buried her face against his chest while she wrapped her arms around his chest; her fingertips clinging into his back.
“Let it out,” he spoke and when he repeated the words once more, the damn of tears finally broke and she couldn’t stop them as they soaked his shirt in her tears.
He said nothing after that as he just held her tight, letting her get out all the pain she had suffered and was suffering now. She had never cried so hard in all her life, that she actually fell asleep in his arms from it. When she woke it was just dusk outside and she was still held tight in his arms as he was asleep. The pain in her head had lit up a bit but not much as she laid her head back against his chest, listening to his heartbeat.
“How’s the head,” he spoke as she kept her eyes closed and her head still slightly on his chest.
“Still hurts but….not as bad,” she spoke in a soft tone.
“Your arms have to be hurting after holding me that long,” she says as she looks up to him.
“Please….holding you….I can do forever easily,” he says with that cheesy smile of his.
“I know I don’t say it to you often enough…..but thank you,” she says, “You’re the only one that doesn’t look at me with eyes of pity or disgust. You just look at me with eyes filled with honest love.”
“That’s because I do love you…..I will always love you and have your back,” he tells her as he slides his fingertips through her hair as he looks to her while he spoke. “I’ll be by your side always….you can count on that.”
She looked up at him as she laid her hand on his cheek as she spoke, “You sure you don’t want to take back those words. I wouldn’t hold it against you.”
“Eva….please….after all the s**t I’ve taken from you,” he says, “If you think I’m going to pack my s**t and leave. You’ve got another thing coming.”
“Asshole,” she spoke as she punched him in the arm.
“s**t,” he says with a chuckle where he punched her in the arm.
“Speaking of which, what are we gonna do about the kid,” he asked her.
She laid back on the bed on her back as she looked up at the ceiling for a moment before she turned to look at him as she says, “Geeta….Angelo is getting papers made up for her.”
“Papers, you mean like paper, papers,” he spoke.
“Yeah, theirs a lawyer Dexter Erins….he’s human but he’s worked with our kind for quiet a few years,” she says, “He does good work. I know of a pack in Canada that will take her in, at least I know she will be safe there. She needs to be as far away from here as possible before the s**t hits the fan.”
“How do you know they will take her in,” he asked her.
“They aren’t your normal pack,” she says, “Remember how I told you there are some who just want to fit in and live life just like everybody else. Well the pack up there, it’s mixed with humans, half breeds and full breeds but nothing in their eyes is different. Plus, remember that kid….our first case…..
“Yeah, that teen shifter….who killed the hunter….right….
“Right, Dexter got the charges on the kid dropped but just in case he got him moved up there were he can learn about what he is and had to handle himself,” she says, “I’m going get her moved up there, plus it will keep trackers off her.”
“Trackers, aren’t they the same thing as hunters,” he asked.
“No, their our kind….not only shifters but vampires, decays….that sell their talents out to hunters for cash and to save their own ass,” she told him.
“Jesus….I could say something on the subject but with the right amount of cash offered a lot of people can be bought off,” he says, “That’s the only thing that turns my stomach being a cop….pay a CI enough and some will turn in their own mother.”
He was quiet for a moment after as he looks to the side and then to her as he says, “Why didn’t you ever….you know…..
“Go up state myself….not gonna deny it didn’t cross my mind once or twice but this is my home and nobody’s going to take it away from me. Even after what I learned yesterday….this right here is the home I was raised in and it’s where I’ll stay,” she says as she looks up to him.
“That’s my girl,” he says as he slides his fingertips through her hair as he grasped the back of her head slightly as he leans over and kisses her.
She heard rustling around in the room next door as she kissed him once on the lips lightly as she spoke,”Geeta’s awake.”
“Poor kid,” he spoke as he moved off her slightly as she sat up on the edge of the bed, putting her feet on the ground.
“I don’t know how she’s going to react so I’ll go in the room by myself,” she spoke.
“Hey this is your territory….I’m just learning still,” he says, “Besides it actually might be easier for her to hear it from somebody that knew her dad. Marcus seemed like a decent enough guy.”
“Yeah, he actually was in my book. I’ve known him for about four probably going on five years,” she says, “I first met him, when I got attacked by Jericho’s fathers pack. He tended to my wounds, made sure I was fed….I doubt he would of ever admitted to it even if he was still around but I think he was the one who spoke up to the leader for me. Because of him and well luckily the pack leader back then saw to it I was never to be touched again by anyone in his pack.”
“I remember Marcus taking me to him,” she says, “I was still weak and going in and out of consciousness but I remember the look he gave me sitting at his chair. His eyes never showed weakness, pity, disgust or anger when he looked at me. It was the first time I felt like I earned the respect of one of my own kind. Jericho was pissed off but his father immediately put him right in his place. I remember him looking at me and he says, “A wolf….even a female one that fights that much to the brink of their own death. Has my respect and by my Cree will never be touched by anyone in this pack while I lead it.”
“You’ve fought all your life haven’t you,” he spoke up as he pushed himself up and sat on the edge of the bed right by her.
“Somedays it feels like it….hell it feels like that everyday, most of the time but that day even if I don’t remember all the pieces to it. It was the first time, I felt like I earned a small piece of me back,” she says, “That must sound kind of weird, saying it like that, huh.”
“No, it doesn’t actually,” he says, “My mom worked her ass off everyday to make a living for us, we lived in a crappy run down neighborhood and somedays I would have to wear hand me down clothes because things were tight. So I got made fun of at school, got the crap beat out of me there too….sometimes even in my own neighborhood from one of the gang members on the corner. I wanted to go home and complain to my mom, ask her for help but there was nights my mom came home at 2 or 3 in the morning. She was dead on her feet but she always had a smile on her face as she made my lunch for school or just looking over my homework. She worked herself to the bone for me, so even if something bad happened I would clean myself up the best I could and if she was home. I always smiled because she always did it for me. After watching her, I would walk to school every day and whatever I heard I brushed it off because I knew I was going to get myself and my mom out of that neighborhood. I was going to make something out of myself, the plan was to join the military and afterwards became a detective. I made something out of myself, which is more then I can say for the others in my school.”
She smiled slightly as she nudged his shoulder with her own as she says, “You are such a dork.”
“Well, you’re a b***h so were even,” he spoke with a smirk as he glanced at her.
She smiled slightly as she laid her head on his shoulder as she squeezed his arm slightly as saying, ‘Thanks.”
She got up from the bed as she walked out of the bedroom and down the hall to the other bedroom, where she opened the door to see the younger girl curled up against the corner of the room with her back pressed against the wall tightly. When she noticed her, Geeta got tense and started to get defensive but to her she just looked like a scared kid.
“Geeta….geeta….it’s ok….calm down your safe here, ok,” she says, “I’m Eva….your dad probably told you about me. I’m a friend.”
She nodded her yes slightly as she was a bit at ease but still unsure if she could trust her or not. Which is good because she needed to learn the difference in the ones she could and couldn’t.
“Where’s my….dad,” she asked her.
Eva never really understood how to tell people when they lost loved ones while working on cases but she tried to be a calming sense for her.
“Geeta….your dad….he’s…..well
“He’s dead…,” she spoke in a soft whisper of a tone.
“Yes….he’s passed and he asked me to take care of you and find you somewhere safe to live,” she told the girl as she took a few steps over to her and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Why did my dad, get hurt,” the younger girl ask as she was hesitant to move but she sat on the bed a few inches from Eva.
“All you need to know is your dad was a great guy and a good father,” Eva says, “That’s all you need to know about your Dad. The good memories you have of him, always remember them and he will never leave your heart.”
She was quiet for a moment before she looked up to Eva as she says, “Is that true?”
Eva starred at the floor a moment before she spoke as she glances to her as she says, “Yeah, it’s true.”
“How can you be sure,” she asked her.
“Cause that’s how my dad stays in my heart everyday,” Eva told her and turns to look at her. “I didn’t lose my dad until I was older than you but I keep my best memories of him deep in my heart and even though he’s gone. All I have to do is think of a good memory and it feels like he’s here with me.”
She nods her head slightly as Eva spoke, “I promised your dad I’d protect you and I will. Your going to stay with me for a while and then I’m going to take you to a new pack. Where I know, you will be safe. I know someone in the pack when you get there will watch over you. He’s a little older than you but you both I think will get along together.”
“I heard my dad, talk about you once,” she says, “He said you are really strong.”
“I don’t know about strong….I’ve just been through a lot of things growing up,” Eva says, “My home is your home, till we get you to the pack ok.”
“Thank you….Langstone
“Call me Eva,” she tells the younger girl. “No formality in my house, alright?”
“Ok,” Geeta says, “Eva.”
“I don’t know if your hungry or not but I can make you breakfast if you want,” Eva tells the younger girl.
When she asked the younger girl, she could hear her stomach growl and Eva smirked slightly as she says, “Come with me and I’ll make you something up.”
“Can I ask you something,” she spoke as she looked up to her.
“If it’s something I can answer….I’ll try,” Eva told her.
“My dad was my world….but….I can’t cry,” she says, “Does that mean I’m bad?”
She shook her head no slightly and then she says, “My dad was the most important person to me too and when I found out he was killed. I was so numb that I didn’t cry for days afterwards, it wasn’t until I was by myself; coming home from a shift. I took off my coat and I saw his still hanging coat on the rack, that’s when the tears came. I screamed, yelled….let’s just say quite a few pieces of furniture got broken and replaced after that.”
“Geeta, your not bad….your numb right now….loss, pain. It’s different for everyone but that’s a normal reaction,” Eva says, “Do you know why?”
“Why,” she asked.
“Because you cared for your dad so much,” Eva says, “Your heart doesn’t know how to react to the loss so your feeling numb because your heart is confused right now. It will tell your brain, when it’s time to mourn.”
“Ok,” she spoke as Eva stood up from the bed.
“Is it ok to stay up here a bit longer,” Geeta asked her.
“Yeah, come down when your ready,” She told her as she walked out of the room as she closed the door slightly to give the kid privacy.
The kid needed time to process stuff and she could understand that at least; because when she lost the old man she was out on a case and even when she saw his body at the morgue she was absolutely numb. It felt like every ounce of blood had been drained out of her veins, because it felt like her heart stopped. Those days after, she ran on nothing but work until that night she came home. It was like something had snapped in her brain and tears ran down her cheeks. The emotions she hadn’t been able to get out just flooded out like a tidal wave and it hit the roughest it possibly could.
