Chapter 15
A few days later…..
Eva was able to get everything together for Geeta to get her safely to Canada. She got her some clothes and took out enough money to help her get settled in. The night before, Connor made some calls and was able to take that full day off to go with Eva and Geeta. She wanted the kid to be comfortable on the trip so she grabbed her favorite food, barbecue for dinner that night.
While they were eating, Geeta stopped for a moment as she looked up at Eva and when Eva noticed she spoke up.
“What’s the matter,” Eva asked her.
“Um….I….well…
She noticed the younger girl was slightly hesitant; so she spoke again.
“Geeta, whatever it is….just ask,” Eva says, “It’s ok.”
“Kid, it’s all good with us,” Connor spoke up.
“Um….will you come and visit me, sometime,” she says, “I’d really like if you both could.”
Connor smirked slightly as he looked at the girl then Eva, who was speechless at the comment but not in a bad way. It was hard to admit but she was going to miss the kid after getting to know her; so when she heard her comment the words were surprising.
“It might be a while….but if you want we will definitely try to get the time and will come to see you,” she told her.
“Really.”
“Yeah, we will,” she says, “Besides, your part of this pack now as well so of course we will.”
Geeta was so happy that the younger girl didn’t even think, as she got up from her seat and stepped over as she wrapped her arms around Eva’s back; hugging her tightly. She was slightly hesitant for a moment as she looked down at the girl and she wrapped her arms around the younger girl hugging her back.
“Thanks Eva,” Geeta spoke.
“No, problem kid….I got your back,” she tells her.
Later on that night, after Geeta went to bed for the night. Connor and Eva were still downstairs, she was grabbing a drink out of the fridge when she got caught up in her own thoughts. She didn’t even realize she was until she felt a slight touch to her lower back and her name being called.
“Eva….hey….what’s going on,” Connor spoke as he was standing close.
“Huh….what.”
She shook her head slightly as she shut the door to the fridge as she looked to him as she says, “Huh, Connor.”
“Babe, you ok,” he asked.
She leaned back against the counter as she stared at the bottle of water in her hands.
“Angelo’s right, I think I am different,” she spoke as she looked up to see him staring at her.
“Eva….babe what’s going on,” he asked.
“Angelo’s said I’ve changed and I think he’s right,” she says, “I don’t think it’s such a good thing.”
“Change….what’s wrong with that,” he says, “It can be a really good thing.”
“Maybe for humans it can be but not for my kind,” she says, “I’ve always been able to do what needs to be done because I’ve never had to think of anyone else. If I got in a fight, I can transform without thinking twice. If I got injured it wasn’t a big deal cause it just happened. Having ties to things now, it’s getting confusing.”
“What bull s**t,” he spits out as he stepped back from her.
“Your just a human….what the hell do you know,” she spoke as she felt like hell for saying it to him but she had no choice.
“Did you really just say that,” he asked as he stood there dumbfounded at her comment.
“I don’t need to repeat myself….you heard me,” she says as she walks past him and he goes to grab her wrist to stop her but she jerks her hand away from him.
She takes a few more steps back from him as she says, “Human sentiment….being around you and the kid is clouding my judgement.”
She turned away from him as she walked through the living room and grabbed her jacket and keys from the coffee table near the door. When she grabbed the knob of the door, she heard him call her name which caused her to only hesitate a moment before she left. She slipped on her jacket and zipped it up as she walked over to her car, got in and turned on the ignition and drove off.
“Come on….you bastard….time to play follow the leader asshole,” she says as she looks up at the rear-view mirror at a dark suv that was following her turn for turn.
She was mixed with anger and sadness as she continued to drive further away from home. Eva felt a pit of guilt building in her stomach at the fight she just had with Connor but if she didn’t start it; she was actually terrified that he might have tried to follow her. When she thought about it, she knew he would have so she was hoping if she stunned him enough he would be to angry with her to even think about it for a while. If anything long enough where she can get the intruder to follow her to a neutral territory. Whoever it was at the house, the scent they were giving off was familiar but she didn’t understand how it was possible and that’s what made the anger and the concern build. She was scared of Connor and Geeta getting drawn in and she was extremely pissed they would try to attack her in her own home.
Attacking her at work was a kick to the pride but coming to her home that’s where she was drawing the line. She took a risk that whoever this new player on the board would follow her but it was a risk she had to take. If she was the one they were targeting, she had to move the scenery to somewhere that she knew and hopefully they didn’t. When she felt a decent amount of distance was away from the house as she took a street she knew to be pretty empty this time of night that lead to a empty lot at the end. She looked out at the outside mirror of her door and they followed her to the letter. Whoever this was they were incredibly stupid or massively brazen, she wasn’t sure but she honestly could care less.
She turned into the empty lot and parked at the far end of the lot. When she parked, she kept her lights on for a moment as she watched them park in the lane in front of her. She slipped her hand in the middle console between the seats as she slipped a knife in a holder out; leaning up in her seat she slipped the knife in the back of her pants and slipped her shirt over it to cover it.
“Just breathe,” she says to herself as she left her engine on as she got out of her care and left her door a c***k as she walked to the front of her car.
When she looked at the car, she could hear extremely slow heartbeats in the vehicle. It was a few moments before she saw someone as they got out of the drivers side of the suv. Just from the smell it was easy to tell it was a dog shifter, lower class from the wolf. He was tall, brown hair and eyes, wearing a black suit and caring a side piece; easily seen by the way he walked. She watched as he stared at her for a moment as he walked around the front of the vehicle and walked to the passenger side. The one who stepped out next, she had no idea who it was but somehow her blood knew and it boiled through out her body when she came into view.
“This way Ms Ioain,” he spoke in a ruff voice as he helped this woman out who just oozed money just by looking at her.
She was tall, neatly pulled back dark hair, green eyes….a dark blue dress with matching heels and a long black leather coat that ended at her ankles. When the woman gazed at her, it felt like nothingness but right now she could give a damn.
“Your definitely a step up from the other low life’s gunning for me,” she says, “But trying something, even just coming to my home was a stupid mistake. I don’t know if your incredibly brazen or massively stupid.”
“Watch your tongue b***h,” the male spoke out with a growl.
“Screw you dog….don’t you have something to fetch for your master,” she spoke with a smirk.
When he took a step with a aggressive growl, the woman snapped her fingers once and says, “Alex.”
“I’m not in the mood for games,” she says, “Either come at me now and try to get the bounty or say what you need to say and leave me the hell alone.”
“It’s seems that old woman made you arrogant,” she spoke in emotionless tone.
“Made me arrogant….old woman,” Eva says, “Enough games….your not a hunter….”
“How do you know.”
“You’ve got to much of that….I’m better than you….air around you,” Eva says, “Especially with that stick up your ass walk.”
“Lack of manners….expected being raised around humans,” she says, “Even bedding one….how disgusting that my blood has been mixed with such filth.”
“Disgusting….mixed with your blood,” Eva says, “Watch your words princess….say another word how I was raised and it will be your last.”
The older woman spoke with a smile that was filled with such an egotistical mannerism it was starting to royally piss her off.
“I guess if you really want a answer to who I am,” she spoke as she took a few steps forward, giving Eva a clear visual of what she looked like.
Her heartbeat went from steady to beating out of her chance as she got a full look of the woman’s facial features and realized who she really was.
“You,” Eva spoke simply as she tried to not let the feelings welling up inside of her show on her face.
“I have to say….I’m surprised that old woman actually had the brains to keep you hidden from us for so long,” she says, “You were a mistake that should have been destroyed. The disgust and shame we felt having a child with black fur, what a eyesore on our family name. Then to find out you were an alpha on top of that fur of yours….well their was no way I was going to allow you to infect my other pure children with a filthy botched experiment like you.”
“Aunt Leira….she never told them,” when she thought about her, she felt a pit of fear welled inside for her aunt.
Eva was pissed at her yes but she still loved the older woman like family no matter what transpired between them. She felt a mixture of fear and anger build inside of her as she listened to this woman.
“Hold on….bitch,” Eva spoke out.
“Say another word like that to my lady, lab rat and I’ll knock your fangs out,” he yelled.
“Go to hell mutt,” she says, “I’m a Alpha….I could rip your throat out before you take a step.”
“And you….what did you do to my Aunt,” Eva says, “Leira never told you I was an Alpha….what did you do that to her.”
She couldn’t help the soft chuckle that passed her lips as she looked to Eva and she spoke once more.
“Hmmm….the good doctor….when did I see her last,” she says, “Alex….Did I pay the good doctor a visit?”
“No Miss….but I did….with my team,” he says, “We do tend to get messy when we play….not sure if I remember if the boys left her alive or not.”
“Hmmm….I don’t remember….if my husband said kill the good doctor or….was it….torture her to near death for lying to us,” she spoke as she glanced at him and then looked to her.
“If you laid one god damn finger on her….I swear to god….I will tear into you so slowly….that you will beg for a merciful death,” she nearly screamed out.
“Tsk, Tsk, Tsk….getting angry over one human,” she says, “You’re an Ioain….well if I’m technical, your more Ioain property.”
She takes a step forward as a growl nearly ripped from her lips but she grounded her fangs together hard to keep from showing her growing anger. She would be damned if she let that b***h get the best of her.
“I’m a Langstone….And I belong to know one,” Eva says, “Especially some uptight b***h with a chip on her shoulder. You want me dead so much, scrap the contract….put your dog in it’s pin and you get your claws dirty trying to take me out. That’s unless your to much of a coward to kill your own blood with your own hands.”
“I don’t dirty my hands with filth….that’s why I have others takeout the filth,” she says, “Besides your lower than me….”
“Lower and filth, such sweet words coming from my….what should I call you, egg donor….Useless….Mother maybe,” Eva says, “Nahhh….mother means you have a heart. Luckily I was raised by a great Dad, not a heartless harpy like you.”
“You have no idea how I could hurt you without even laying a finger on you,” she says, “I’ve already taking one thing from you….I can easily bathe that lil hobble you call home with that human’s blood….you’ve w****d yourself too or tear his family apart, piece by piece and then when he’s broken and on his knees. I’ll take his head and give it to you nicely packaged.”
She felt the world drop underneath her feet as she listened to her talk and she knew that she wasn’t lying. Eva knew one her body, in her blood she could easily end her guard and her but she knew the high class type don’t do anything without some kind of a plan to backup.
“Is she alive,” Eva asked not caring if she sounded weak, even if she was still pissed at her aunt she still cared for her.
“Alex,” she spoke simply.
“When I saw her last….their was a lot of blood….can’t be sure,” he spoke with a smirk.
“I’m going to give you this one and only gift….consider it a goodbye gift; go see her,” she says, “Say your goodbyes. You have 24 hrs, come back to this spot exactly at midnight and I won’t have every thing you love in this world torn apart in front of you. Be a minute over and I will s*******r one person you care for every 15 minutes in the most horrific way you could possibly think. Understand?”
Eva swallowed her pride as she spoke, “How do I know you won’t kill them all after you have me.”
“I’ll have you….why would I need them anymore after that,” she told her simply.
“Do I have your word,” Eva spoke up as she looked at ground for a moment then up to her.
“You’ll be dead,” she says, “Problem solved.”
Those were the last words she spoke to her and her little pet dog helped her back in the suv and he stared her down as he started it back up; pulled out and drove away. She watched them leave and as soon as she felt their was decent enough distance; she got back in the car….shut the door and drove off. Eva pulled out her cell and scrolled down to her aunt’s number and pressed it; putting the phone to her ear as it began to ring.
“Come on….answer your phone….,” she spoke as the bile of worry for the older woman rose in her throat.
When it continued to ring, she hung up and called again.
“Please….please answer your phone,” she kept repeating as she called over and over again so many times she lost count.
“DAMNIT!!!” She yelled out as she tossed her phone in the seat as she drove faster then she should but she couldn’t get rid of her building fear.
She shaved a half an hour off the drive when she got to her place a hour later. Eva parked out front, when she got out of the car the smell of blood was thick in the chilled air. She looked to the front door, to see it snapped in half with the lower half barely hanging on the frame.
“No…,” she spoke as she ran up the steps and inside.
The place was completely wreck from top to bottom. They didn’t leave anything unturned when they destroyed her house. She searched every room but she couldn’t find her anywhere.
“Come on old woman….give me a beat….let me hear anything,” she says, “Gimmie something to find you.”
She closed her eyes as she took a deep breath as did her best, to mute everything out that wasn’t important. After a few moments, she picked up her scent and it was faint but it was there; a heartbeat.
“Their you are,” she spoke as she ran through the back of the house and she took the porch door to the back.
She ran through the open door and jumped off the porch as she caught the scent of other shifters that had been there. It only took her a minute or so, to sort out her aunt’s that had been masked within the others.
“Gotcha,” she spoke as she ran through the building snow as it came down more.
She saw patches of blood on the snow starting to become more and more visible as she kept in the direction she picked up her trail. She ran through a large snow bank as she came upon what she feared more then anything.
“No,no,no,no…..AUNT LEIRA,” she yelled as she ran over and dropped to her knees as she grabbed her gently and rolled her on to her back.
She held her breath when she looked at her multitude of wounds. It looked she was beating with a break from top to bottom. She held her head slightly and out of nowhere she felt light breaths.
*cough*cough*blood comes up with each cough…..
“Leira,” she spoke as she tore off her jacket and laid it over the battered older woman.
“Ev….Ev…Eva,” Leira tried to get her name out only to cringe in pain.
“Please Aunty hold on,” she spoke as she picked the older woman up as she held her close as she trudged back to the house and got her back inside.
She took her into the back room, she uses as a temp check out room if the need arises in a emergency nearby. She laid her up on the exam table and tore through the shelves as she got gauze and anything she thought might help. She tried to do anything to make the bleeding stop but there was just so many wounds.
“Ev…Ev*cough*cough*Eva,” Leira spoke as her fingertips were trying to grab something at her hand.
She grabbed her hand and touched her cheek as she couldn’t help as the tears slid down her cheeks as she says, “I’m right here. I’m right here with ya.”
“Sweet….heart*cough*Eva…I’m so….sorry,” Leira spoke as she looked up to her.
“You have nothing to be sorry about,” she says, “I’m so sorry I got angry with you. You and dad were trying to protect me against those selfish arrogant bastards. You guys were my parents.”
Leira was struck speechless at the girl’s comment but it also brought a smile to her pain ridden face. She light touched her cheek as she spoke, “Caleb….a..and….you….*cough*cough*we….werrr…..were…the best….parts of my….life.”
“You….can’t leave…please….you have to fight,” Eva says, “You cant leave me, please.”
“Eva….my sweet….Eva,” she says, “I’m….so….sor…sorry….I lied to…*cough*you. We….I….did….it so you wouldn’t get….hurt.”
“I know that now….I’m sorry I got pissed, I was just so confused and that made my anger worse,” Eva says, “It doesn’t matter….none of that matters. Tell me what to do to help. Just tell me….
She smiles at her as she says, “It’s ok….I’m….ok*coughs* Caleb….will be….there….were I’m going.*cough-cough*I’m….sorry…I….I’m….lea…lea…leaving you…But…I….kn…*cough*know….your going….to…b.be…ok. Your….so….strong….I…*cough*I know….your….gonna….be….ok.”
Her hand drop from her face and she went limp in Eva’s arms.
“No, no, no….Please….no,” Eva spoke out as the tears fell more as she grabbed her hand and pressed it to her cheek.
She shook her by her shoulder slightly as she looked to her as she spoke. “Aunty….Aunt Leira....wake up…..come on please wake up….”
“LEIRA!!!!” She screamed as she held her limp body tightly against her own as the tears flowed out and streamed down her face as it was pressed into the older woman’s shoulder.
She stayed by her side for what felt like hours as she sat near the table where she laid. When she looked at her limp body, she felt completely numb it was like loosing her father all over again. The tears that had been flowing before are now dried up, She stood up as she looked at her as she brought her hand up and slid her eye lids closed as she looked to her a moment more.
Eva walked out of the room as she gathered all the rags she could fine, filled a large basin with water and took them back in the room and sat them near the table. She dunk the rags in water as she gently washed the blood off her skin; taking such gentle care with each wound she came across. When she cleaned off the places she’s could, she laid her arms across her chest. As she left the room, once more as she walked out of the house and to the shed she had in the back. She got tarp, rope and carried back into the house. Where she wrapped her up gently and tied the clothed tarp close at the legs, waist and the chest.
She picked her up in a cradle like style as she walked her outside and walked to the large willow like snow covered tree in the back that was a few feet from the snow covered vegetable garden. It was almost robotic her actions next as she laid her down on the soft snow covered ground and next to her she began to dig her fingertips in the ground. Where she started to claw through the ground, by the time she was finished the skin of her fingers and hands were torn an bloody. She could give a damn, this feeling of numbness running through her body was an old friend of hers she was hoping to never feel again but right now it was all she knew. It was the only thing she knew that wouldn’t leave it was the only thing she knew to never leave her.
Eva moved over to her as she lightly touched her face that was now covered by the thick material.
“I was so blinded by anger….after reading those notes,” she says, “All I could think about was….the secrets….how could the people who I called family keep something like that from me. I never considered that you just we’re trying to protect me….you were the one who gave me life after all. You and Dad protected me….you gave a monster like me purpose. I have a way to end all of this….I know it’s not a way that will make you happy but if anything I know that the ones care for will be safe. Even if it’s without me but I know their lives will be safe without me in them.”
“Goodbye….Mom….all this time I always wanted to know who my mother was….when all I had to do was look in front of me and you were there,” she spoke as she picked her up and laid her in the grave she dug her.
It took a while but when she was done, she couldn’t move from the spot if she tried as sat by the newly covered grave.
