Chapter 16            Back at the house….            Connor paced the living-room floor still pissed at the fight but was confused as well because the fight went to 0 to 60 in a matter of minutes. He had fights with her before but they worked them out easily enough after a few words and shared a drink or two. Her attitude never really bugged him, it was one of her quirks that he didn’t mind and he didn’t want to lose her. He knew she had her reasons for having her walls up and after all the s**t she had been through it was understandable.             He went to grab a beer out of the fridge and the phone rang, Connor walked over and grabbed it off the counter and answered it.            “Langstones.”            “Connor, where’s Eva,” Angelo spoke in a rushed voice.            “Angelo, man….hold on what’s going on.”            “Where’s Eva,” Angelo spoke out.            “She’s not here man,” he says, “What’s going on? Is something wrong with Eva?”            “You need to find that girl now,” Angelo spoke out once more.            “Slow down man and tell me what’s going on,” Connor asked him.            “Blood.”            “Blood, hold on Angelo I’m totally confused here man,” Connor spoke.            Angelo poured himself another glass of bourbon from his flask and he took a drink as he says, “I saw blood and then nothing. That girl’s future has always had bumps in the road and well that’s just how life goes for us. I’ve always seen things pretty clear and what I saw now was like being clocked in the back of a head with a ton of bricks. It was bloody and then nothing.”            “Are you saying Eva’s gonna die.”            “I’m saying….Whatever has happened or going to happen, it’s clouded her future so much I can’t even tell if she still has one,” Angelo says, “I tried feeling for her, she hates when I do it but whatever has happened. She’s locked me out. You need to find her before….hell just find her.”            “s**t….,” Connor says, “Geeta, her bus in the morning…            “I can take care of everything for her,” Angelo says, “Just find Eva.”            “Just find her kid……            “Alright,” Connor spoke as he hung up on him.             “s**t….baby what the hell is going on,” he spoke as he leaned back against the fridge.            He was thinking of nothing but Eva at the moment but he didn’t want to leave the kid here by herself. Connor put the phone down as he grabbed a pair of shoes slipped them on and ran up the steps. He walked in the Geeta had been using since she got here and he felt bad for having to wake the poor kid up but he didn’t feel right leaving her alone. Connor was hesitant at first as he sat on the edge of the bed as he lightly grasped her small shoulder and gently shook her awake.            She was still slightly asleep when she started to wake and when she saw Connor. Geeta was slightly surprised as she tried to rush to get up and he calmed her down as she realized who it was.            “Connor,” she spoke in a soft tone as she looked up to him.            “Sorry to wake ya up so early,” he spoke.            “Um….is….something wrong,” she says, “Where’s Eva?”            “Um, yeah….worked called her in,” he says, “I’ve got to go and help her so I’m going to take you over my mom’s place.”            “Your mom….uh….not sure….            “It’s ok kiddo, she knows about everything,” he told the younger girl to help reassure her that everything will be ok.            “Um, you mean….she’s ok….with people like me,” she asked.            “Yeah kid, she’s really all good with everybody,” he says, “Hell she says  I got lucky with Eva.”            “Safe,” she asked.            “Yeah, Eva told me once that the best way to hide your guys scent from another is to be surrounded by humans,” he says, “My mom lives in a big neighborhood full of people, so you will be good and covered kiddo. I know you will be safe with her. You can trust me Geeta.”            She looks to him for a moment then she nods her head as she tells him “Okay.”            “It’ll be ok I promise,” he says, “Get changed and get your bag packed up…..quickly ok.”            “Ok,” she says to him as he got up and walked out of her then down the steps to the living room.             He walks over to the couch as he grabs his cell out of his jacket and pulled up his moms number then pressed it.             It rings just a few times and she answers, “Hello.”            “Mom, um….I’m sorry for waking you up….I know it’s really late,” he spoke.            “Honey what’s going on…..are you alright,” she asked slightly rushed.            “I’m ok mom….just never mind me. I’m sorry mom but I gotta ask you a big favor.”            “Honey whatever it is….just ask,” she spoke.            “Eva and I have been watching a kid,” he says and then tells her what’s been happening.            Afterwards she says, “Honey, it’s ok. I’ve got room for her and I’ll get her to the station.”            “Thanks, mom. I’m sorry about this,” he spoke.            “Baby don’t worry about it,” she says, “I’ll take good care of her. Hurry over.”            “Thanks again mom….will be there soon,” he tells her and both hang up.            When he hangs up, Geeta steps off the bottom step and walks into the living room with her coat on and her bag packed up.             “You all packed up kiddo,” he asked.            “Uh Huh, I’ve got everything,” she spoke.            “Ok,” he says putting on the best smile he could at the moment as he grabs his jacket and slides it on.             “Geeta, you know you can trust me….right,” he spoke.            She nodded her head slightly as she says, “Beside my dad, Eva and you are pretty much all I do.”            “That means a lot kiddo,” he tells her.            “Has something happened….,” she says, “Um….where’s Eva?”            “Connor,” she says his name when he doesn’t say anything back to her.            “I wish I could say I knew but….I             “Is Eva gonna be ok,” her tone gave way to the rising worry about Eva.            “You and I both know, she’s really strong….right,” he spoke trying to reassure the younger girl in some way Eva was going to be ok, even though he was getting more concerned by the moment.             “Your gonna make sure she’s ok,” she asked him.            “You got it kid,” he says, “I’m going to take you mom’s. You don’t have to worry she knows about….your kind. She’s cool with it….She will take really good care of you.”            “You and Eva….,” she spoke as she looks sad as her gaze shifts to the floor for a moment.            “Geeta….it’s gonna be ok,” he says, “We might be late but as soon as everything blows over. I promise you….the both of us, will get time off and will come see you.”            “You swear,” she asked.            “Yeah, kid I do,” he says, “Come on let’s get going.”            He’s made the trip a few from her place, it always took a bit of a drive but this time it was so quick because his mind was going a 100 different ways about what he was going to do. When he pulled up front to his mom’s place, he tried to put his best smile on but it was hard.             “Theirs a lot of humans around this place,” she spoke as she looked outside the window of the car door.            “It’s ok….theirs some decent people around here,” he says, “Everything will be ok.”            “Ok,” she spoke in a timid tone.            He gets out of the car as she gets out and closes the door as well. Connor takes the pathway and Geeta followed by close as she looked around. He noticed she was looking around and he lightly grasped her shoulder gently as she looked up to him.            “It’s okay, Geeta,” he spoke as he lead her to his mom’s house and knocked on the front door.            It was only a few moments later when she answered the front door as she smiles as she looks to them both.             “Come on in sweetheart,” she says with a smile as she offers her hand to the younger girl.            Geeta looked to Connor and he nodded his head ok as Geeta took her hand slightly and she walked in with her, then he followed behind them. He could tell the girl was a little uneasy but he knew the safest place was for her to be in the last place anyone would look.            “I’ve already got Connor’s old room set up for you, Lil bit,” she says, “So you can get some rest.”            She looked over to Connor as he says, “It’s ok, kiddo. I promise.”            She walks over to him as she did something he never expected, she hugged him around the waist. He looked over to his mother, who smiled as he kneeled down slightly and hugged her back.             “You’ll be safe here….I promise,” he spoke.            “Bring Eva back,” she spoke in a soft tone.            “I will,” he told her.            His mom looks at her as she says, “His room is the first one on the right. I’m just down at the end of the hallway. Anything you need, you just come get me.”            “Ok….um….thank you,” she spoke as looked to him one more time before she started to walk towards his room.            They watched her as she disappeared into his room and she was the first to speak as she looked to her son as she laid her hand on his cheek as she says, “You look so lost.”            “I’m trying my best….to keep it together for her,” he says, “But….I’m freaking out in my head about Eva.”            “She is so freaking….I can’t even put into words how I think of her,” he tells her.            “You really do love her,” she spoke with a smile.            “Yeah….I do,” he says, “Sometimes she annoys the piss out of me but hell shes the best thing that’s ever come in my life. If I lose her, I don’t know what the hell I’ll do.”            “Then bring her home,” she says, “You’ve always been so determined in everything you do, I know you will find her and I know it’ll be ok.”            “Thanks,” he spoke.            “I’ll keep the lil one safe,” she says, “Go do what you have too, I’ll make sure she gets to the bus safely.”            “I don’t know what I’d do without ya,” he tells her as he tries to smile but anything he puts out at the moment would feel fake.            She smiles as she lightly touches his cheek with her fingertips as she says, “It’s a mom thing.”            She could see the struggle of emotions going through him as she looked at his face and then she took a light breath as she says, “Now go….I have everything handled here.”            “Thanks mom,” he said as he hugged her once before he left.             When he got back in his car and drove off, he tried to think of where she might of gone. The only places that really came up she might of gone was the station, Angelo’s and her aunts but last time he brought her name up Eva was still angry with her so he didn’t think she would of went there. He decided the first place was to go to Angelo’s and hopefully maybe get a possible lead on where she might be.             Luckily Angelo’s was the easiest place to get to so when he arrived, he parked out back. He turned off the ignition and grabbed his phone as he got out of the car and shut the door behind him as he walked to the back door then opened it. Connor walked down the hallway as he made his way to his office, luckily he caught him in the office.             “Angelo,” he says as he walks in.            He looked up from his paperwork as he spoke, “Geeta taking care of?”            “Yeah, my mom is gonna keep a eye on her for me,” he says, “Eva always said the best way to hide was in a big area of humans. The scent mask their smell.”            Angelo smirked slightly as he thought of her and then his emotions instantly switched to worry when it came to her.             “Hear from her yet,” Angie asked him.            “Nothing….actually that’s why I came here,” Connor says, “I’ve tried to think of places she might of gone but man….I’m coming up empty here and I’m getting seriously worried.”            “I know….I’m sorry how I called but I’ve never seen something so vivid like that before,” he says, “Her future has always been so clear and this cloud just hit me so hard it knocked me down to my knees. All I saw was blood and darkness….then nothing.”            “f**k,” Connor spoke as he held his head in his hands and then looks up.            He grabbed his phone as he stared at it for a moment and he knew it was a Hail Mary shot but he pulled up her number and pressed it. Connor put it to his ear and it just rang over and over again.            “Come on, baby….answer your phone,” he spoke as he paced back in fourth in the office.            Angelo watched as the poor guy paced back and fourth, concern an fear washed across his face.             Her cell went to voicemail after a few moments of ringing and then he pressed her number again. He did this probably another nine more times and on the tenth he heard the cell click over to answer.             “Eva….            “Eva, baby…..            Angelo looked over to him when he heard him call her name.             “Come on baby….talk to me,” he spoke with a tone mixed with concern and worry, even with a dash of hope.            “Eva….baby I love you….tell me where you are,” he spoke in hope he could get her to tell him anything.            “Con….nor,” her voice to him just sounded so broken and beaten down.            “That’s it baby….come on talk to me,” he spoke in almost desperation.            “Connor….            “Yeah baby….come on just tell me where you are,” he says, “I’ll come and get you and will go home.”            She was quiet for a bit before she spoke.            “Home….yeah I don’t have a home anymore,” she spoke and her voice was just devoid of any emotions anymore.            “Eva,” he spoke as he sat on the couch as his gaze was stuck on the plain wall as he couldn’t believe this was actually Eva who was talking to him.            “Eva, baby of course you got a home,” he says, “It’s a good home. It’s gonna make a great family home for us. Come on babe we get a pup have a couple of kids….we could definitely do it.”            He tried to goat her in some way of bringing her back to her old self because the woman he was talking to now; wasn’t the Eva he knew.            She felt the tears beginning to build again as she tried to talk to him but she had nothing left in her to cry.            “You know I actually started to think about the future,” she says, “I never thought about the future till I met you. I only thought about the next day and if it didn’t come; I was actually ok with that but then I met you and my entire way of thinking changed.”            “Eva….            “I never thought a happy future was in the books for me,” she says, “You gave me the courage to believe I could….I wish we had more time.”            “Baby….come on baby tell me where you are,” he spoke as he got off the couch and stood.            “Let me come get you….will talk….whatever is running through your head please don’t do it,” he says, “Just tell me where you are, I’ll come get you….will grab a beer some cheap Chinese and we can talk about anything you want. Just tell me where you are….please Eva. Whatever your planning on doing….don’t.”            “Leira’s dead,” she spoke in that emotionless tone once again.            “What,” he asked.            “She’s dead,” she tells him.            “How…..when,” he spoke out.            “They wanted information on me so they went through her,” she says, “She’s dead because of me….I won’t….I can’t bury anyone else I love.”            “Eva baby stay where you are….I’m coming to get you,” he says, “Please just stay where you are….just wait for me please. I’m coming.”            “I won’t be here when you arrive,” she tells him.            “Eva….please you stubborn b***h just listen to me,” he says, “I can’t lose you, just stay there. Let me come and pick you up.”            The few moments of silence between them was painful as he hoped and prayed maybe, just maybe she might have listened to him.            “Please Eva…..I’m begging you baby…..just wait for me,” he says, “I love you baby so much. Please just stay there….I’ll come and get you. Will talk and figure out what to do next. Just don’t move, I’ll hop in my car and I’ll meet you at her house. Just please stay.”            There was another long pause of silence between them as he prayed his words might have reached her just a little; just enough to maybe stay put.            “I love you Connor….always and forever,” she says, “Goodbye…….”
