Chapter 4

Chapter 4              It had been a few months since she started working with the guy and as much as she really hated working with someone; working with him wasn’t so bad. He was occasional a pain in the ass but he stuck to his work, he saw our cases through and he never gave up. For a human he actually has some decent qualities in him, she could see for once even though she would never admit it to the old man if he was still around some humans weren’t that bad and maybe some could even be trust worthy if it came down to it.            Still something to get use to but in someways it was well….kind of nice in a way. It had been a long time since she had felt this way but it also made her slightly defensive as well because every time someone got close to her and she lost them; it just was to much anymore. They say loss is a part of life but when life keeps taking everything from you its hard to want to try and keep things close to you anymore.            That night, the last few nights had been so quiet so we were finishing up paperwork and he leans back in his seat as he puts his hands behind his head as he looks to her.                    “What,” she says as she looks up from her paperwork she was finishing up from her last file.            “Come on, I’m starved and as much as you deny it,” he says, “I heard your stomach going off about a hour ago. Let’s go grab something, I’m buying.”            “Your buying….that’s not the right thing to say to a woman like me,” she says with a light smirk as she keeps her gaze on her paperwork as she finishes it up.            “Alright, if your buying I’m picking the place,” she says as she slips her file in her cabinet, closes it and locks it.            “It’s almost eleven, what’s open this late at night that’s decent,” he asked.            “I know a tavern….the food’s good and I can guarantee pretty much the best burger you will ever eat in your life,” she spoke as she grabbed her jacket from the back of her chair as she stood up.            “Bullshit….my uncle pretty much makes the best burger’s hands down,” he spoke as he grabbed his jacket.            “Well, no disrespect to your uncle but Angelo makes the best in the city,” she spoke as she walked past him. “Plus he’s gotta a pretty nice selection of beers on tap.”            “Your talking a pretty big ass game,” he spoke as he walked up behind her and then to the side as they walked out of the station together.            “Ok, if this isn’t the best burger you ever had,” she says, “You can ask me three questions? Whatever you want? But if it is and you cant lie, your my barista b***h for three weeks, every morning you get my coffee the way I like it.”            “Do you really got to make it barista b***h,” he spoke.                    “Yep,” she says simply as she walked into the elevator and pushed the button for down.            He jogged in and slid between the doors before they closed as she leaned against the wall as the rode the elevator down.            “So three questions, anything I want and you’ll answer,” he spoke as he looked to her.            “I don’t lie, I made the wager so I’ll keep my end of the bargain,” she says as she glances up to him when she spoke.             “Oh that’s just a mean way to screw with a guy when he has so many questions already,” he told her.            “I know,” she says, “Why do you think I said you only get three to ask?”            “Ok that is kind of a b***h maneuver,” he says as he looks to her.            “Yeah, I know,” she says, “Why do you think I came up with it?”            “You are such a f*****g tease, I swear to god,” he spoke as the elevator ping as the doors opened to the garage and they walked over towards her car.            She unlocked the car as he got in and she got in next both closing the door once they were in. Sliding the keys out of her pocket, she started the ignition and backs up the car as she pulls out and drives out of the lot then down the street.             The drive to the tavern was pretty quiet between the two of them except for a little idle chit-chat but that was big step between the complete silence it use to be between the both of them. When she parked on the side of the building that looked like a run down hole in the ground.            “Seriously this is the place that serves the best burgers ever,” he says mocking her as he looks to the place.            “Didn’t take you as the snob type,” she spoke with a smirk as she turned off the ignition and got out of the car as she locked it up when he got out.            She walked around the back of her car, then past him as she walked up the quiet side until you could hear the old music being played from the c***k of the door as it opened and closed as people walked in an out of the place.            When she walked into the door, she got a couple of looks from a couple of warlocks and two shifters in the back she paid no mind when she heard her name being called by a big burly man with a smile.            “Well if it ain’t my little pup….been busy at the station,” Angelo spoke from behind the bar table.            “Yeah, they keep me busy like usual,” she says as she takes off her jacket and puts her jacket on the back of the chair as she sits at the bar table for a few moments.             “You never bring company….this is something new,” he says as he looks at Connor.            “Angelo….Rookie…..Rookie….Angelo,” she says with a smirk to the burly guy.            “Come on its been three months and I’m still rookie to you,” he says as he takes off his jacket and takes a seat.            “Take it as a compliment kid, she never brings anyone here. The only person she use to eat here was with her dad,” he says, “So, if she is bringing you here she’s got a bit of respect for you then. So take it as a good sign.”            “Plus the rookie doubted the greatness of your burgers Angelo,” she says as she looks to the older guy as he crossed his arms across his chest as he looked to Connor.            “Doubting my cooking kid, now I’m going to have to help her win the bet now,” he says, “Eva….usual for you.”            “Yeah give me the works….,” she says as she looks to Angelo then Connor as she says, “For Connor. Medium Rare.”            “Alright,” he says as he grabs two bottles of beer from underneath the counter as he pops the caps off them and puts them in front of them.            “Have them ready in a bit,” he tells her as he walks back into the kitchen.            “Wait, did I hear that right,” he says, “Did I hear you call my name.”            “Piss me off and it will be back to Rookie in a sec,” she says as she takes a drink from the bottle as she gets up from her seat and walks to the back to an empty pool table.            “Alright, alright….I know when to back off certain areas,” he says as he follows her to the back.            “You play pool,” she asked him as she took another drink from the bottle as she sat it on the corner of the table.            “Yeah, I play….,” he says as he sat up the table and she grabs them a few cues.            “Since, you probably need all the help you can get,” she says, “I’ll let you go first.”            “Oh, thank you all gracious one,” he says with a smirk as he gets use to the cue she gave him and lined up his first shot as he leaned over the table slightly to take his first shot.             He takes his first shot and puts two in the furthest left pocket and he looks up to her with a smirk; then sinks two more before he scratches.            “Awe, you missed,” she spoke as she lined up her shot as she took one shot and knocked it into the middle right pocket.             “Nice shot,” he says as he ends up watching her more than the game.            “Who taught you how to play,” he asked.            She lined up another shot as she remembered the first time the old man brought her to this place after she graduated the police academy. While they waited for their food, she asked if he would teach her how to play. Honestly that was one of the best memories in her life besides the day he decided to take her into his home and make her family.             Honestly the simplest things he use to do with her always made her the happiest because she knew everything he did for her was straight from the heart when it came from.             “Dad, he took me here for dinner on my graduation night and taught me how to play pool,” she says as she sends another ball into the pocket as she talks. “Honestly, that was one of the best nights of my life….besides well….            “Your dad really was a legend in our station for putting some of the worst away,” he says as holds the cue in both hands and balances his chin on the tip of it as he speaks to her.            “He, didn’t really care about the legend status….,” she says as she stops before she makes her next shot as she leaned up from the table as she spoke. “The old man, couldn’t care less about being known or getting his name in the paper, s**t like that. He just wanted to make a difference….he couldn’t care less if his name was mentioned as long as what ever he was working on got finished right. A kid back to their parents, a cold case finally finished; a murderer brought to justice….that’s all he ever wanted done. He just wanted the injustice in the world to be set right if it was possible he wanted to find a way.”            “You really miss him still don’t you,” he asked.            “Everyday….everyday…..hell I wouldn’t have become a cop if it wasn’t for him,” she says, “Growing up listening to his story, he use to tell me. I would just sit there and listen to him tell me about his different cases and how they turned out. Every time he would tell me, I just knew that’s what I wanted to do…..that I wanted to be just like that. I wanted to make that kind of difference if I could in the world. Sometimes even if he told me the same stories over and over again, I still would listen to them for hours just like if it was the first time I ever heard it because it meant a lot to him and me.”            “Your old man, sounds like he was a good guy,” he spoke as she lined up for her next shot.             “That old man just wasn’t my father,” she says as she takes her shot and scratches by accident. “He was my savior.”            “You act like the guy saved your life or something,” he says as she stands up from her shot as she spoke.            “Yo Eva…..foods up,” Angelo called out from the bar.            “Come on,” she spoke as she laid the pool cue on the table as she walked up front as she grabbed both their baskets. “Grab the beers,” she spoke to Connor.            “Thanks Angelo,” she spoke with a smile as she walked to the back of the tavern to an empty table.             She sits the food down as she pulls out her seat and sits down as he puts the beers down on the table for him and her. He pulls out his chair and she’s already picking up her burger to take a bite. The one good thing about Angelo’s he caters to shifters and all kind of under-worlder’s , so he always makes hers just the right way.            “Alright, take a bite out of that lil bit of perfection and I’ll actually answer your question,” she spoke as she took a bite of her burger, chewing slowly and then she swallowed.             “Really,” he said with his brow raised as he looks to her for a moment and then he picks up the burger an takes a big bite; then after a few moments of chewing he swallowed.            He took a drink of his beer and she was already smirking as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he smirked.            “Alright, alright….shit….I will fully admit that this is the best damn burger I’ve ever eaten,” he says in defeat.            “Told you,” she says as she takes another bite of her burger as she sits it back down in the basket as she grabs her beer to take a drink.            “Alright, so I spilled in defeat….now its your turn,” he spoke as he looked to her.            Her smile went away real quick but she always kept her word so she took another drink of her beer as she sat it down as she says, “Fair is fair.”            “Why did you call your old man….savior,” he asked.            “When I called the old man my savior, he really was,” she says, “When I was younger, my mother and father didn’t want me….didn’t want the stigma I would put on their family name if they kept me. Luckily they had three other kids that were the right….shade….so to speak. So my mother gave me to Langstone when I was four and I’ve never seen them since. To me he really was my savior, he gave me a home, clothes on my back, food in my belly and unconditional love like if he was my real father. In my eyes, he was….that and the only one I’ll ever want. When people say blood makes you family….I don’t believe a word of that hallmark bullshit. Family is someone that will love you, no matter what and be there for you as well as never give up on you. He never…..never once gave up on me or thought different of me. To me I was his kid and if anybody said different he would of laid them out on their ass because….that’s how much he cared for me.”            He was completely dumbstruck after she told him the story, leaving at a few tidbits of information about the whole thing. She looked at him and then picked up her burger as she took a bite, chewing.            “Your f*****g kidding me right….what kind of people would do that to a kid,” he says to her.             “You think I would really hate them but in all honesty I don’t even remember what my mother and father look like well enough to really even dislike them,” she says as she takes a drink of her beer. “If I’m really telling the truth, it really doesn’t even bother me that I don’t even remember their own voices. I asked him once about this woman I use to have dreams about from when I was younger about giving me to him, asking who she was. He told me, it was nothing to think about because he said a dream was just exactly that….a dream. What you can’t remember can’t effect you….he was right. Growing up I thought of her a few times and her face right now is nothing but a blur to me with no voice. Other’s might think I’m heartless saying that but how am I the heartless one when I was just a child.”            “Jesus….,” he says as he takes a bite of his burger and stuffs a few fries in his mouth.            “Before, you pull the pity card out on me,” she says, “Two things….you will thoroughly piss me off and the other I don’t need it. I was raised by a damn good man, who I was luckily enough to call my father. So just don’t pull that card on me, it just pisses me off….alright.”            “I wasn’t going to pull any pity card on you,” he says as he swallows his bite he chewed up. “I just thought, I was right in asking for you as my partner.”            “Ok, kissing ass will get you the Rookie card pulled real quick….real fast,” she smirked and they ended up sharing a laugh as they looked to one another.             As they were talking, she was going to get up and get them another round but she was shoved back into the table they were eating at.            “Sonofabitch,” she growled out as one of the bottles were knocked out of her hand and shattered on the floor.            “Your kind ain’t welcome in this place,” he says as he shoves her again.            “Eva,” he says as he was about get up.            “Stay,” she spoke simply as she glanced to him over her shoulder as she spoke.            “Yeah, stay like a good human pet,” he says and before he could show more then Connor needed to see; she drew back her fist and knocked the guy on his ass.            Next thing she knew and all out brawl broke out in the tavern. When Connor tried to help her, she pushed him away and yelled for Angelo to get him out. He grabbed her by the arm and she shoved him away as she pushed him back towards Angelo. Angelo, wasn’t a 100% human; he was a psychic but his mother was a human so he was lucky enough to pass more for human then all of us. So he was good with both under-worlders and humans in his place, he preferred it that way.             Angelo dragged him out the back and tried to keep him outside but he broke away from Angelo just in time as he ran in to see her have a guy pinned up against the wall off the ground at least; a foot of the ground.             “What the hell,” he spoke and she heard him with her eyes wolven still glowing when she looked to him she turned them back to humans immediately when his eyes went wide. When he saw them before they reverted back.            “God damnit,” she spoke out with a growl.            She spoke as she dropped the guy on the floor as another came up behind her as she took a wooden pool cue across her back slamming her into the front of the wall. When she slammed into the wall, she heard groaning as she turned to see that Connor had tried take the guy behind her as he was backhanded with a fist and knocked out hard against the wall. He slid down the wall unconscious as he hit the floor.             Angelo by this time was back in the tavern, with a double barrel shout gun in his hand as he c****d it with the other and that got the attention of everyone in the tavern real quick. Luckily that was one night, when the s**t hit the fan that it actually went away just as quickly as it started.             When Angelo closed the place down, he helped her carry Connor to her car and put him in the back seat, then closed the door.            “So what are you going to do about the Rookie here,” he asked her as he leaned against her car slightly.            “Hell, if I know….I’m hoping that hit jumbled his brain a bit on the memory of tonight but I doubt I’m that lucky,” she says, “He saw my eyes, when he wakes up he’s going to either have a ton of questions or scared out of his f*****g gourde. I honestly don’t know which is worse, Angelo.”            “You like the guy don’t you,” he asked.            “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about but….he’s a good cop….honest, loyal,” she says, “He’s got a helluva a future Angelo and I don’t have to be a Psychic to see that but I don’t think he can be that way with me as his partner.”            “Is that what he wants,” Angelo asked her.            “No, he’s to damn headstrong and doesn’t want to walk away,” she told him as she looks down slightly and then looks to him.             “When are you going to finally f*****g open up again,” he asked her. “Your not a curse Eva; you’re a miracle and you don’t even realize it. Do you even know how much you changed Robert when he was still alive. That old bastard, wasn’t ever happy until you were brought into his life. Your not a curse Eva, your gift….if you just realized how much good you have in you instead of thinking the worst of yourself. Maybe you could finally stop and realize how remarkable you are in the eyes of others.”            “Then explain to me….why everything I care about or start to love…dies,” she says, “Losing him broke my heart in ways that can never be repaired. He was the only one that loved me and now he’s f*****g worm bait because of me.”            “No he’s dead because his heart and head got in the way in trying to make a difference,” he says, “Stop thinking your some damn cursed object….contrary to belief but you do have people that really care about you. Speaking of which, your’s truly does a lot….And that unconscious human of a partner of yours in the back seat does to. Hate to tell you. He’s got a thing for you.”            “What,” she spoke as she face palms herself as she slides her hand down her face as she looks to him.             “I can’t deal with this right now,” she says, “I need to take care of him to make sure he’s ok and what he remembers.”            “Yeah, keep lying to yourself,” Angelo spoke as he looked to her with a smirk.            “You’re an asshole….you know that,” she says and smiles slightly as she looks to him.             “Yeah I know,” he says, “I do care for you kid, just don’t put yourself down so much like you do. You made a man I considered to be like a brother happy and this old guy right here as well is quiet fond of you to. Blood doesn’t always make family its whose there for you through thick and think that makes real family….at least in my book.”            She nodded as she looked to him.            “Night, Angelo,” she spoke and he smirked as he says night and she got in the car.            Started up the car and drove off, she ended up having to take him back to her place since he was still out of it.             She parked in her garage as she got out of the car, unlocked the door to her house and then walked back to the car as she pulled him out of the backseat; then hulled him up and carried him over her shoulder as she walked into her house. She shuts the door, locked it and walks in the house as she walks into the living room and lays him across her couch. He was so tall and broad with muscle, luckily he wasn’t to big to fit her couch in this aspect. She slips out of her jacket and tosses it on the table as she walks over an sits on the edge of the table near the couch. Picking his head up slightly as he groans a bit, which was a good sign in a way that he was alright.             She picks up his head and puts it on a pillow as well as checks his head for any cuts or any whelps. He didn’t have any cuts but he had a good size whelp forming on the side of his head and looks like he’s going to have a black eye. She gets up as she walks into her kitchen as she opens up the freezer and grabs a bag of frozen vegetables.                     She wraps it in a kitchen towel as she walks back into the living room as she lays it lightly over his right eye and the right side of his head. He groans and shivers a bit but his breathing goes back to normal, she sits on the side of the table an looks to him and sighs as she looks to him as she rubs her cheek slightly.             “What the hell am I going to end up doing with him dad,” she thought.            Then she got up as she untied his shoes and slid them off as she tossed them to the side. She goes upstairs as she grabs a couple of blankets and pillows for herself and then she walks back down stairs. She covers him up in a blanket and then she slid her shoes off and unbuckled her pants slightly as she got comfortable as she got up in her recliner. Well the recliner was really the old man’s but when she couldn’t sleep, she would get up in the chair and was able to get some sleep when she could.            The next morning…..                    She had managed to get a few hours of sleep in and when she woke up he was still asleep. He actually looked more calm and sound asleep then anything so she figured. She could get a least a shower and a change of clothes in before he woke up.            Slipping out of the recliner, she walked up stairs to her bedroom and dug through her drawer, getting a pair of jeans out and a shirt. Since she didn’t have to go in today, she just grabbed comfortable clothes because she figured the morning was going to get complicated when he woke up. She walked into the bathroom as she turned on the shower and sat on the edge of the tub for a few moments as the water got heated up.            Last night kept replaying in her head as she sat there thinking about what was going to happen when he woke up. Was he going to react like every other human or was he….            “God, I’m just making myself more crazy with all these freaking questions,” she thought as she ruffled her hair slightly as she got up and got undressed and stepped into the shower as she got underneath the shower head.             She laid her hands on the wall, as she tilted her head down and closed her eyes as she just enjoyed the heat of the hot water as it ran down her body. She opened her eyes as she looked down to her stomach where she was stabbed, the wound was still slightly sore but it was already completely healed. Being non-human had its benefits but their was still some certain parts of like pure silver that made things hurt like a b***h when coming in contact with skin.            You could barely tell where she was stabbed, except for the slightly redness around where the wound was and just the faintest area of bruising.            “Hope that jackass enjoyed the broken arm,” she thought as she remembered the fight.            She finished up her shower, soon after and she turned the water off as she stepped out; grabbing a towel as she dried her hair and then the rest of her body. She walked out into her bedroom and tossed the towel on the floor as she got dressed. Once she was dressed, she brushed the knots out of her hair and just pulled it up into a ponytail as she walked out of her room.            She didn’t hear any movements downstairs, at least no yelling or screaming yet so he was still out which she was kind of grateful for; she wasn’t really looking forward to what was going to happen next when he woke. Walking down the steps to the living room, she moved towards the kitchen where she got a pot off coffee going then she got a couple of mugs down out of her cabinet and sat them near the coffee maker. She sat up on the cabinet as she listened to the coffee maker as it dripped and the deep aroma of the coffee filling the air.            After a while, when the pot was nearly half way filled; she started to hearing groaning in her living room as she looked up as she saw him start to stir on her couch.
