Evelyn's Pov. "We need to talk!”, those words rang repeatedly in my head, I watched his tensed poise as he walked around my room clearly distracted by the thoughts swirling in his head. " What happened today?", I asked. He turned and pointed his piercing gaze at me, I had to resist the urge to cower under them, so I squared my shoulders meeting his gaze as hard as I could. " I'm still trying to figure that out, did you tell your father about our outing? ", He said pinning me with his dark eyes that made me squirm. I wondered why anyone would be looking for me in the first place in an event filled with much more important people. "No, I'm just as confused as you appear to be, we were all in a room where more than half of its occupants are ruthless businessmen and women, somebody tragically attacked Victoria and mentioned my name", I said. His cold dark eyes swept over my form causing me to shiver slightly. I was a little confused as to why he mentioned my dad's name. "You're my wife-" "To be", I interrupted him earning an annoyed look from him. "Don't be ridiculous, don't forget you're already my property, and I don't appreciate you interrupting me when I'm talking", he huffed. "As I saying, I'm guessing that now that you have my name, there is an increased tendency that we now have a common enemy", he continued, each word sounding so foreign that I couldn't fully comprehend. "If.....if what Victoria said is true, then I'm also in danger ", I quivered the reality as the of my words hung fiercely in the air shaking me to the core. "I know....", He paused keeping his eyes on me for a second or two. " No harm will come your way", His firm and assuring words made me feel relaxed but I still couldn't ignore the feeling of dread that wrapped its strong arms around me. "I need you to stay within the premises until I get to the bottom of this", He said. I noticed a change in his glassy stare for a moment under the bright and warm light in my room, he looked like he cared and was worried about me. "Okay", I nodded wrapping my arms around my midriff tightly. He looked at my bed briefly before walking towards the door. The memory of the figure I caught watching me at the party recalled quickly in my head, and before I could control myself I wrapped palms around his arm, I felt him stiffen under my touch. I looked up watching as his brows arched up in question. " I.... I...... saw someone watching me at the party after our brief conversation at the balcony", I dropped my palms wringing them nervously under his intense scrutiny. "Why are you just telling me, Evelyn?! ". I flinched creating a reasonable distance between us, I was hurt by the obvious reprimand in his voice. " Well you were too worried about Victoria and even shunned me publicly when I tried to talk to you ", I frowned at him remembering how he rudely dismissed me at the party. He was the one so concerned about us maintaining an image for the public to see, but when Victoria was hurt, I saw another side of him. And I am curious to know the kind relationship they have or had. He frowned, dipping the arm I held onto earlier into his pocket. " Go to bed, Evelyn." "What about you?", I asked watching his hand halt on my door handle. "Are you okay?", I added when he didn't reply. He sighed deeply, "Don't worry about me", He continued his long stride out of my room, leaving me feeling flushed and embarrassed. Just when I thought we managed to have slightly normal conversation, he had to shun my concerning questions like that. When my head hits the soft pillow on my bed, I could only hope tomorrow comes with less drama. -------- The next morning, my light steps down the stairs echoed and for a moment I stopped to stare at the left wing, at Adrian's side of the house. I wanted to have breakfast at the dining room for once, I knew eating alone wouldn't help my poor appetite. The soft glow of the chandelier cast a calming shine around the room in addition to the soft rays of sunshine that was allowed to fill the room. Adrian stopped mixing his tea once he sensed my presence, his eyes drifted to the fitted jeans and cropped top I'm wearing before he pointed to the chair at the other end of the table. We ate silently, with the low murmurs from the TV occupying my mind with distracted thoughts. "...... Richard Carter and his family........ seen attending a social function donning a la mode attires last night", the voice of the reporter filtered into the room leaving my tummy cramping. It was a bitter reminder about how I never seemed to matter to them, they attended events and forced me to stay back. I didn't realize I was swirling my eggs messily on my plate until Adrian cleared his throat. "You'll be meeting Mrs Greene today, she's an old staff here, and this afternoon you'll be measured to prepare for your wedding dress", His voice cleared my thinking. I swallowed, my wedding, the irony, the golden daughter- Lucinda was out their parading the red carpet with them. While I was sold off to a stranger to settle their debts. I felt tears burning beneath my eyelids and I tried to control them, I'll hate myself if ever appeared weak to Adrian. " Okay", I shrugged. " It's not like I have a choice", I said gulping the entire content of my teacup. "I'm glad you know that now". He's up on his feet leaving most of his food untouched. "And Evelyn, I'm aware of how uncaring your father is but I need you to cut off any communications with him from now on".
