Chapter 3 Hannah McKenzie's eyes welled up with tears as she gazed at her mother's frail form in the hospital bed. Her heart swelled with genuine love and concern, memories of their joyful past flooding her mind. She recalled lazy Sundays spent baking cookies together, her mother's warm smile and gentle guidance as she learned to ride a bike, and their silly dance parties to her mother's favorite oldies. As she held her mother's fragile hand, Hannah felt a deep sense of devotion and care. She remembered the way her mother's eyes sparkled when she read her favorite books aloud, the way her voice soothed her when she was scared, and the way her hugs made everything better. Hannah whispered nothings but sweet to her mother, "You're strong, Mom. You'll get through this. I'm here for you, always." Her voice trembled with emotion as she stroked her mother's hair, her touch filled with tenderness and compassion. In this moment, Hannah's love for her mother shone brighter than any fear or worry. She was determined to be her rock, her safe haven, just as her mother had always been for her. Hannah's mind was a jumble of emotions as she sat by her mother's hospital bed, but suddenly, a floodgate of memories burst open, and she was transported back to that fateful night. The stranger's face, so familiar yet elusive, finally clicked into place. Her eyes widened as she recalled the piercing gaze, the chiseled features, and the unmistakable air of confidence. And then, it hit her - the realization that made her heart skip a beat. She had slept with Alexander Blackwood, the enigmatic CEO of Blackwood Industries, the man who dominated the headlines and social media feeds. The same man who was revered for his ruthless business tactics and admired for his chiseled good looks. Hannah's thoughts raced back to the news clips she had seen, the ones where Alexander Blackwood was hailed as a visionary, a mastermind who had built his empire from scratch. She remembered the anchors' voices, filled with a mix of awe and trepidation, as they spoke of his latest deals and conquests. "...and Alexander Blackwood, the CEO of Blackwood Industries, has done it again, folks. His latest acquisition has sent shockwaves through the industry..." "...Blackwood's net worth has surpassed the billions, cementing his position as one of the richest men in the country..." "...but critics say his methods are ruthless, that he'll stop at nothing to get what he wants..." My mother's surgery...it's her only chance." Mia reached out, taking Hannah's hand in hers. "We'll find another way, Hannah. We won't give up." The loan officer nodded sympathetically. "I understand, but I'm afraid our decision is final." Hannah's eyes filled with tears as she stood up, her voice shaking. "Please...My mother is dying. This loan is her only hope." Alexander's response was curt and unenthusiastic. "What's the occasion, Father?" Reginald ignored his son's tone and pressed on. "No occasion, just wanted to catch up. How's business?" Alexander's reply was brief. "It's fine. We're managing." Reginald's interest in his son's business was merely a precursor to the real reason for the call. "Good, good. And how's my granddaughter, Miranda?" Alexander's expression softened slightly at the mention of his daughter. "She's doing well. School's keeping her busy." Reginald's voice took on a more serious tone. "Excellent. I was thinking, it's time we discussed your marriage life again. You need an heir, Alexander." Alexander's cold demeanor returned. "I don't see why that's necessary, Father." Reginald's patience was wearing thin. "Necessary? It's essential! You need someone to carry on the family legacy." Alexander's disinterest was clear.
