Chapter 9It was late afternoon on an uneventful day and Thomas and Alan were finishing their shift. Thomas had managed to overcome his shyness and he accepted Alan's offer of a beer because he had exciting news he wanted to share. He'd just passed his driving test and he was proud of his achievement. When Thomas finished college his lecturer had continued to mentor him and it was he who encouraged him to learn to drive. With his help Thomas was able to get lessons at a reduced rate and Mr Barker told him that once he'd passed the test many more job opportunities would be available to him. Thomas was particularly proud of himself because he'd passed first time with no faults. They were on their way to the pub, deep in conversation, when a woman's voice shouted after them.
