THE ASSIGNMENT
The dimly lit office of the Bureau of Narcotics of the United States buzzed with a quiet intensity. Everyone in the room wore a serious face. Detective Andre Rivers leaned against an old filing cabinet, containing the files of solved cases; his sharp eyes fixed on the busy monitor across the room. Detective Andre looked heavily built and stood six foot tall. He looks meticulous and calculative… O and handsome too; He had the face of a detective. Perhaps because that was what he had always wanted to be when he was a kid. Detective Andre, a young officer joined the Bureau only five years ago, but had already created a profile and a track record for himself. He had had a few successes in eight out of the nine cases he has solved. A slideshow of Senator Adrian Kane’s unreasonable lavish lifestyle played on the screen. There were images of private yachts, black-tie galas, and exclusive meetings at secret, undisclosed locations alternated with grainy surveillance photos of clandestine handshakes, shadowy figures exchanging briefcases, and cargo containers being loaded late at night. There were also images of popular figures, who were known especially for the support they rendered to the seating president during his political campaigns and also for their humanitarian services across the country and in Africa. The faces displayed on the screen had been a nightmare and a difficult puzzle to solve.
“This is not just any mission, Andre,” Agent Claire Hayes said, standing beside the monitor. Her voice carried the weight of frustration and urgency. “This case has been haunting us for over a decade, without any reasonable evidence to pin down the bad guys.”
Andre turned to her, with looks that expressed disbelief. Intrigued but skeptical, he couldn’t help but to wonder why a case should take up to a decade without being solved. “What makes him so untouchable?”
Before Claire could answer, a sharp voice cut through the room. “He’s so untouchable because every single time someone tries to bring him down, they screw it up!”
Andre turned to see Assistant Director Conrad Blake stepping into the room. A seasoned officer with graying hair and a perpetual scowl, Blake was known for his no-nonsense demeanor and a string of failed attempts to bring Senator Kane to justice. His broad shoulders and towering frame filled the doorway as he fixed his gaze on Andre. “And of course, he also has the backing of the government, so every time an evidence is presented, the frustrate it and have the court turn the case in his favour,” Blake finally said, talking loud and bringing his voice down to fade as he landed on the last word.
“And now,” Blake continued, gesturing at Andre with a derisive wave, “we’re handing the most critical mission of this decade to a kid who’s barely cut his teeth in the field.”
Andre straightened, his jaw tightening. “With all due respect, sir, I wouldn’t call five years of undercover work ‘barely cutting my teeth. I may not have cracked bigger cases, but I have a track-record that shows I get better every time on all the cases I’ve handled before now,’” Andre said almost raising his voice, but he knew better than to do so.
“I’ll advice you keep your emotions under check Detective,” Blake snorted. “Five years, huh? Let me tell you something, Detective. I’ve worked as an undercover in this Bureau for twenty years, before rising to the position I am right now. And I’ve been after Kane since you were still learning how to file reports. I’ve led six operations against him, each one deliberately and meticulously planned; with the best team ever. And do you know what happened? We came up empty-handed every damn time.” Agent Blake said, hitting the desk so hard that Detective Rivers shook. “And the last time I tried,” he continued, “I was able to gather a few evidence that would have guaranteed a little success, but guess what? It was dismissed as not having grounds. The court said the evidence was not enough. Wasted efforts”. Blake said, hitting off a mouse from the desk to the ground.
Claire stepped in, her tone firm. “This isn’t about personal pride, Conrad. You can say anything to feed your ego, but Andre remains the best candidate for this mission. He has the skills and the track record to pull it off.”
Blake ignored her, his eyes locked on Andre. “You think you’re better than the agents who have already died trying to take Kane down? You think you can do with five years’ miserable experience what I couldn’t do with up to thirty years of experience?”
Andre met his gaze evenly. “I think this case needs a fresh approach, sir. And I’m willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.”
Blake’s scowl deepened. “Whatever it takes, huh? Let me give you some free advice: Kane doesn’t just run a drug syndicate. He runs an empire. Bigger than America itself. If they could pin him to his crime, they would not need us to crack a damn case. His men are loyal because he pays them better than we ever could. His contacts are protected by layers of plausible deniability. And the man himself? He’s got the big guys in his pocket, from judges to journalists, to top government officials who owe him more than they can ever pay. You make one wrong move, and he’ll bury you before you even know what hit you.”
Andre remained unfazed. “I appreciate the advice, sir. But if you couldn’t bring him down, maybe it’s time to let someone else try.” Andre said with confidence, but knew deep down that he was scared and doubtful about the mission.
The tension in the room was palpable. Claire stepped between them, her voice calm but firm. “That’s enough. Back the hell off Blake. Andre has the assignment, and it’s not up for debate.”
Blake threw his hands up in frustration. “Fine. Send your golden boy. But don’t come crying to me when this mission ends up like all the others.” He stormed out, leaving an uneasy silence in his wake.
Claire sighed and turned back to Andre. “Ignore him. Blake’s a good man, but this case has broken him. He’s spent almost half of his entire career chasing Kane, and every failure has wounded his personal pride.”
Andre nodded, though he couldn’t shake the weight of Blake’s words. “Why me, Claire? Why now?”
“Because you’re not like Blake,” Claire said simply. “Your plans have been proven to work over time. I’m sure you’re going to pull this off just fine. And you’re not going in as a cop—you’re going in as one of them. You’ll be posing as a driver hired by Kane’s staff. Your job is to gain his trust, get close to his inner circle, and gather enough evidence to bring him down.”
“didn’t Blake also went one time as an undercover?” Andre inquired. “Yes he did; the first time,” Claire replied. “But, Blake lacks one thing, which you have; patience. Patience is a good virtue and discipline in our line of job.”
Andre gestured toward the monitor, where a woman’s photo had frozen on the screen. She was standing beside Kane at a gala, her striking features framed by her dark hair and her posture exuding quiet authority.
“And the lady?” he asked.
“That’s Alexandra Cole,” Claire explained, pulling out a separate file. “She’s Kane’s most trusted aide. She’s been with him for nearly a decade, handling his private affairs and, more importantly, his illegal dealings. If you want access to Kane, you’ll need to go through her. It’ll not be an easy thing to do.”
“She’s loyal to Kane?”
“Fiercely,” Claire confirmed. “But loyalty can be tested… and broken.”
Andre studied Alexandra’s photo closely, then closed the dossier and tucked it under his arm. “When do I start?”
Claire hesitated, her tone softening. “Andre, I need you to understand the risks. If you’re caught, we can’t save you. You’ll be on your own. We cannot drag the name of the Bureau into this, by all means”
“I understand.”
As he walked out of the office, Blake’s parting words lingered in his mind. This was going to be the biggest and most dangerous case Andre would be handling. Kane Senator Kane ran the biggest drug syndicate in the country. There were also rumors of him involving in child trafficking. Although there had never been any such case pointing towards him. The stakes were higher than ever, but Andre wasn’t about to let the past define his future. Though the future was so dark and uncertain…
