Chapter 19 - Melody

I had been staying in Ace’s pack for a couple of days and everything was so perfect that there was a small part of me which hoped I wouldn’t have to go back to college. While we were in his pack there was nothing to remind me of our relationship’s difficult beginnings and everyone was so happy to meet me. The only downside I could see to staying here permanently was constantly having to think of new excuses to give to Ace’s family to explain why we couldn’t start a family together yet. Then again, I would probably have to start making excuses to Ace too. He hasn’t said anything, but I had seen the way he looked at me when his family started talking about us having kids. “Oh no, what have I done wrong now?” Ace asked. He had just come back from preparing us breakfast in bed and he was carrying a tray piled high with more food than the two of us could possibly eat. “Nothing, I was just thinking.” He placed the tray on the bedside table and slipped into bed beside me. He positioned his body on top of mine and kissed me so passionately that it completely took my breath away. As he deepened our kiss I could feel his erection pressing against my core. This wasn’t what I had in mind when he told me that he wanted us to have breakfast in bed but I certainly wasn’t complaining. “Whatever you were thinking about, I hope this is enough to show you how much I want you,” he whispered while kissing his way down my neck painfully slowly. “I can feel how much you love me in my chest and it is getting stronger every day.” “That is because our bond is growing stronger, before long you will be able to hear my thoughts and feel everything I am feeling.” He stopped kissing my neck and leaned back so he could look into my eyes before adding. “Then you will know just how important you are to me.” The intensity in his voice made me shudder with desire and made my chest heat up as he sent his love to me through our bond. “I think I am finally starting to realise that.” I wrapped my arms around his body and tried to pull him down on top of me so I could kiss him but he didn’t move even an inch. “I know exactly what you want and I think you are going to need a hearty breakfast first,” he replied while running his fingers through my hair. I pouted at him in response, how dare he get me so worked up when he had no intention of satisfying my needs afterwards. “Don’t be like that Luna, you will….” A distant look came over Ace’s face and he stopped talking without finishing his sentence. I have come to learn that this was the look which werewolves got when people were talking to each other through their mind and it wouldn’t be long before I could do it too. “Shit.” “What’s wrong?” “There has been a bit of trouble with the pack and my dad is insisting that I sort it out as the future Alpha of this pack. I kept trying to tell him that I won’t be taking over for a few months or years yet, but he won’t take no for an answer.” I nodded my head. I didn’t want him to leave but I knew his dad wasn’t going to accept my discomfort as a reason not to follow his orders. Since we arrived Ace’s dad had told us on a number of occasions that now Ace had marked me it would be inappropriate for us to leave the pack again for long enough to graduate. He wanted us to take over running the pack right away and it didn’t seem to matter what Ace felt about it. As far as Ace’s father was concerned, the only purpose that college served was to allow Ace to meet his mate. Now that it had achieved that purpose he didn’t want Ace going back. It didn’t make much sense to me given that Ace and I were so close to graduating. But then again I didn’t pretend to be an expert on werewolf politics. Ace gave me a chaste kiss before leaving me alone in bed with a tray of food that was much larger than I could ever hope to eat on my own. Feeling a little conscious about the food I would be wasting, I took a few sips of the coffee he had prepared for me while trying not to worry about what our future would hold. “Ace, I need your help,” someone called through the door while banging on it. “He’s not here, he is helping his dad with something,” I replied without even getting off the bed. I expected whoever it was to stop banging on the door and go away, but they didn’t. If anything they only started banging on the door even harder. “Maybe you can help, you are the future Luna after all. Please come with me, it is urgent.” I didn’t like the idea of leaving this room without Ace by my side but I didn’t want anyone to accuse me of being a weak human for clinging to his side either. Whoever was behind the door was right. I would soon be the Luna of this pack and it was about time that I started acting like one. I quickly changed my clothes before heading over to open the door. The woman on the other side of the door wasn’t someone who I recognised. She looked to be about my age but that didn’t tell me much because werewolves didn’t seem to show signs of ageing as quickly as humans did, it had something to do with their advanced healing. At least that was one thing I could look forward to. The woman led me through the corridors babbling constantly about how some disagreement that she was trying to solve. I didn’t catch most of the details but there seemed to be something off about the whole situation. I glanced around anxiously. I didn’t recognise the part of the house she was taking me into and I didn’t like the look of the narrow staircase that was ahead of us. “Are you sure this is the right way?” My voice trembled slightly as I spoke, so much for not looking like a weak and feeble human. “Oh I am sure,” someone behind me exclaimed before letting out the most evil laugh I had ever heard. I spun around until I came face to face with Ace’s ex. She was dressed head to toe in black loosely fitted clothing and the moment I laid eyes on her I knew I was in deep trouble. There was no dispute between two pack members. It was all a ruse and I was trapped between two hostile werewolves in a narrow corridor. I could feel my panic taking over all the rational parts of my brain. My only hope of getting out of this was to keep them talking and hope that Ace could find us before they hurt me. “What is going on?” “Don’t play dumb. Do you really think you are good enough to be the Luna of this pack?” Rosie growled. “Ace thinks I am enough, that is all that matters to me.” Rosie threw her head back and laughed. “The Alpha only wants you because of the bond. He would never have looked twice at someone like you if the moon goddess hadn’t interfered on your behalf, but luckily that is something I can fix.” “What are you talking about? I thought we were just going to scare her and stop her from getting too cocky. You said nothing about fixing bonds.” The other woman shrieked pushing her way past me. Seeing my opportunity I started heading for the stairway ahead of me. Behind me, I could hear them fighting. “What did you think was going to happen? we can’t let her become Luna.” “You have lost your mind. He isn’t going to make you his Luna after you kill her, you have to realise that.” I had reached the top of the stairway. I glanced back as I started to descend. Rosie had the other woman by the neck and her claws were starting to dig into her throat. I turned around and started descending the stairs faster. I was about halfway down the stairs when I felt myself being shoved from behind. The pressure caused me to miss the next step and tumble down the remaining steps before bashing my head against the wall at the bottom. “Once you are dead Ace will forget all about you. I know I will never become his Luna but that doesn’t mean I am willing to let some human piece of trash take the place that should have been mine.” She growled at me before kicking me in the head and sending me into darkness.
