Easy Progress

After a few days of observation, Bael and his fiends saw that there really was no way past the border unless they broke through the guard patrols or went on a roundabout way and avoided all of the border patrols. With their physiques and abilities, this was definitely the better option than waiting. Crossing the border would definitely expose them while breaking through would similarly have the same outcome which they didn’t want. Their meeting with the fiends had to be a secret since they had plans for the fiends once they joined the dark alliance. Having an ally whose base was right on the soil of their enemies’ home was definitely going to open a whole bunch of options for them to attack and invade the Harrdigor Continent. Bael was already certain that the fiends were going to join them because if his intel was correct, the humans were already mustering up a force to attack the fiends sometime soon.  He didn’t think that Julius would decline his offer even for a second since the Lord of the Fiends was currently in a bad spot himself.  The only problem now was that the humans had somehow found out about his and his demons’ presence here on the continent and had strengthened their security and defenses. The time it was going to take for them to get to the Shifting Hallows was now going to take much longer and he was worried that the humans would have already attacked the Fiends during that time. Bael didn’t think that the humans would be able to annihilate the fiends but then his chances of providing this vital information to Julius as a show of friendship for a good first impression would be lost. Not only that, but his opportunity to help the Fiends would go up into smoke if the humans had already attacked them. By then, things might be easier for him to pull the fiends into their faction, but how much left of the fiends would there be? They may have just won a major battle against the humans but those weren’t the strongest forces of the human who were a part of the light alliance. Just a small company of paladins and priests from the church wasn’t enough to gauge the full potential of Julius’s army. They had killed 2 human champions but that was just Julius’s doing. It was already clear that the Lord of the Fiends himself was a powerful individual, but they couldn’t be sure about the rest of the fiends. Reports have stated that the fiends were genetically more powerful than the humans and maybe even the orcs since their foot soldiers were able to go toe-to-toe with them, but there was a glaring flaw. The number of fiends in the battle at that time was quite small. Even though they were able to overpower the other armies despite being at a 1 to 3 disadvantage in numbers, what if the humans brought in more people? More soldiers? No matter how powerful the fiends were, 2 fists couldn’t possibly overpower 20. It was just basic math.  Also, the fiends seemed to have only Julius as the highly powerful individual within their ranks that was at or above the mid-champion level. The humans had much more champion leveled individuals than that so once they were put into the picture...it was hard for Bael to even imagine the fiends coming out on top even if they were able to add another 2 or 3 people. “Master Bael, what do we do now?” “What else can we do? Our operations here must be kept secret so we can only avoid the patrols and try to secretly cross the borders. Get the rest ready. We’ll be leaving at midnight.” “Yessir!” “Thankfully, tonight should be a new moon so there won’t be too much light. We’ll be able to hide in the shadows and darkness.” The demons made their move once the sun had set and it was deep into the night. It was pitch black and with their night vision, the demons used this chance to sneak past the border patrols when they had so few teams out on duty. “Tsk, these humans only know how to cause problems!” “My Lord, we’ve slipped past the border but there’s still plenty of ground we have to cross before we make it to the Shifting Hallows...I’m afraid that at this right...it might take us a month or two…” Bael lightly punched the ground and clicked his tongue in annoyance. Bael had planned to travel nonstop and arrive at the Shifting Hallows in a fortnight but with the humans impeding their smooth journey, it would now take much longer than he had intended for this journey to be. “We’ll have to speed up as much as possible. Try to trim down the length of our journey to just a month. Any longer and too many variables might crop up,” Bael said.  The demons heard his orders and they responded in unison, “As you command.” ***** Julius was monitoring the activities of his fiends while sitting in the comfort of his own home.  It had nearly been a month since he had spread the rumors about the demons being here on the Harrdigor Continent and he sat back with snacks in his hands as he watched the humans slowly begin to stir. He already knew about the light alliance’s plans to attack his fiends on their home ground which was undoubtedly going to be a mistake for them. The Shift happened again already and he was now at the southern part of the Shifting Hallows. The area was unfamiliar to him but mapping it out only took a few days. He wasn’t too worried about the shifts anymore because the shifts only helped his fiends expand their territory. In fact, Julius was glad that the Shifting Hallows would have this monthly spatial shift that transported his sanctum from one place inside the hallows to another. The Arachne Sanctum had been shifted to an area closer to the northern border so it hadn’t moved too far away. This was okay because a majority of the northern regions had been terraformed into plasm-infested land that the fiends would thrive in. Naturally, the land had been shifted around but this only allowed the plasm to move and infect other areas. “Hmm, things are going much quicker than I had imagined.” Julius looked at his map and saw the vast majority of the Shifting Hallows had been mapped out and infected with his fiends’ plasm. Due to this, a majority of the monsters began migrating to different areas or tried to take back their lands only to be infected with the plasm. Once one was infected with the plasm, they would either die and turn into resources for the fiends or slowly transform into a fiend. This allowed Julius to expand his numbers when some monsters stupidly enough stepped into the plasm-infested lands. At least a few hundred new monster-type fiends would be added to his ranks every few days. Julius ordered these monsters to go around and infect their packs, hoards, or herds so it could be said that sometime very soon, he and his fiends would have complete dominance over the lands of the Shifting Hallows. He only needed to get rid of his two major competitors, the Mysantis Swarm that was living underground and the Undead. However, these problems didn't stop Julius from smiling to himself at the thought of ruling over such a large expanse of land.  However, he noticed that the floating islands in the central regions were exempt from the hallows’ spatial shift. His wife was still in secluded training inside the Dark Spire so it was good to know that she wouldn’t be disturbed by the spatial shift.  Since he was down to the far south of the hallows, Julius thought that it would be a good time to try and build a sanctum near the ocean, the largest body of water on the planet. His fiends thrived in two kinds of places, plasm-infested lands, and areas where water was abundant. “An underwater sanctum...hmm, I like the sound of that!” Julius had already dispatched a few fiends to scout out the shores of the continent’s southernmost areas but he remembered that the seas located further south of the continent were far too stormy and turbulent. “Well, I’ll just have to make it work somehow. If an underwater sanctum isn’t plausible, I’ll at least try to settle for a port sanctum or something…” Julius reckoned that sea-type fiends would be available for him to spawn once he was able to create a port or underwater sanctum. Speaking of Sanctums, the system stated that he was allowed to build another 2. He designated one a port or underwater sanctum but Julius still had another sanctum he could build. “Hmmm… I wonder if I should save this one and build it on the Lothur continent…” It was food for thought but he’d have to wait until he could actually get a single one of his fiends over there before planning any further. “Sammael’s been reborn for a while now. I should probably go check his condition.”
