The Dark Fiend Sammael

2459 Words
Sammael caught up to Heather and the other champions that had remained behind and were about to slam the large hunk of iron he used as a weapon onto their heads but immediately stopped. He backed up quickly and raised the slab of iron in front of him, blocking the sneak attack aimed at him. Although it was a sneak attack, the person that attacked him packed quite the punch and was able to push him back a few meters with just a single blow. When he lowered the slab of iron he was holding, Sammael saw a towering figure, and next to that figure was a small one. These two individuals were wearing cloaks that covered their faces but when Heather and the rest saw these two, they released a large sigh of relief. They were the two practitioners from the Yin-Yang Sect and were currently the first and second-ranked champions that were dispatched in this campaign respectively. Lilias turned towards Heather and the others and quickly said, “Go, we’ll hold them back here.” “Master Lilias, we can help!” “You’re all injured and in no condition to fight. Walter and I will be enough to hold these monsters back until everyone can get away.” Heather wanted to fight, but she and the rest had all suffered some degree of injury and were exhausted from holding back the fiends in their earlier bout against them. Some of them had been injured quite severely as well so they would only be a burden to the two masters if they stayed here any longer. “...Then we’ll go now. Good luck!” “Go.” “Everyone, continue retreating! Regroup with Florence and the others!” Seeing them all go, Lilias nodded and turned back to their enemy who was eyeing them dangerously from afar.  She recognized the man for a moment but didn’t understand why he was here and in that form. “You...you should be dead…” Lilias said aloud. Hearing his partner’s words, Walter turned towards Lilias and asked in a rumbling voice, “Do you recognize this monster, Lili?” “If I’m not mistaken...this is Sammael, one of the Holy Light Church’s Holy Knights…” “Impossible, he should have fallen at the hands of the fiends. How could he be alive and moreover, be on the fiends’ side?” Lilias shook her head since she too didn’t know the answer. Even when she called out to Sammael earlier, the monster that had a similar face with the former Holy Knight didn’t even respond. The fiend’s eyes only flashed with a dangerous glint before he raised the long iron slab he used as a weapon and began walking towards them.  The iron slab had what appeared to be a rough but blunt edge. It didn’t look like a sword at all but more like a club, however, the dark fiend wielded it like a greatsword. He was using only one hand to do this as the other hand was wielding a large round shield while the extra pair of limbs he sported was gripping onto similar iron slabs that were slung behind the fiend’s body, ready to whip them out at a moment’s notice. From the two practitioners’ perspective, the weapons were just large iron slabs, but they were dangerous nonetheless. Numerous purple-black veins ran along the entirety of the things giving them a rather grotesque look and an obviously dangerous vibe. Although they were the strongest within their group and it was a two versus one situation, Lilias and Walter weren’t going to underestimate this Holy Knight Sammael look-alike.  They shed their cloaks and immediately pulled out their weapons to meet the dark fiend who was rushing at them. Lilias held a whip and dagger while Walter was using two large heavy scimitars. “DIE!!!” Sammael jumped into the air and roared. He brought down his iron slab on top of Walter who quickly rushed forward to meet him in midair. Walter lashed out with his two scimitars and pushed away Sammael. Lilias quickly rushed in and flourished her whip at the dark fiend, wrapping the end of her weapon around the monster’s leg and slamming him into the ground in the next instant. Just as she was about to rush at the fallen fiend, Walter suddenly appeared in front of her and swung his scimitars down in front of him, blocking the iron slab that was flying straight for his partner. “Thanks!” “Mhm.” In terms of power level, these two were stronger than Dark Fiend Sammael by a level or two and since they combined forces, Sammael wasn’t going to be able to do anything to them. The two practitioners quickly began resuming their attacks on Sammael and the dark fiend was forced to pull out the two iron slabs he had slung on his back. With his 4 arms now in action, Sammael was able to cope a little bit with Liilas and Walter’s onslaught of attacks. The two practitioners had great teamwork and understanding. Walter would always rush forward to open up the attack and defend against Sammael’s attacks while his wife, Lilias, would be there to deliver a clean hit on the dark fiend with her whip or throwing knife. The knife was enchanted so after she threw it, it would immediately teleport back into her hands. The weapons the 2 practitioners used were enchanted weapons and they each had unique effects of their own. The twin scimitars that Walter was wielding had a heavy and light effect on them. He could use his mana to either turn them heavier or lighter, which let him perform swift and heavy attacks. Whenever Sammael was able to get a read on Walter’s rhythm, the practitioner would suddenly change the rhythm and his wife would also interfere with Sammael’s tempo. The dark fiend was constantly being pushed back as injuries began stacking onto his body. However, no matter what Walter and Lilias did to him, Sammael would remain strong and fight as frantically as he did from the start. It was like he had infinite stamina and couldn’t feel the injuries on his body. Or more like, he could feel them and this caused Sammael to fight in a more frantic manner. “This...this monster, it’s a berserker-type!” Walter shouted. “We have to end things quickly! Cut off this thing’s head!” “Yeah!” “I won’t...let you…!” “!” It was the first time after Sammael gave his warcry at the start of the battle that he actually spoke. Sammael suddenly slammed the ground with both his weapons and caused an energy shockwave to push away his two enemies. He immediately rushed towards Lilias who was backing away and Walter quickly responded by rushing towards him. However, Sammael quickly changed directions using inhuman actions and attacked Walter who was coming to intercept him. Walter scoffed and immediately raised his two weapons to attack Sammael but his wife suddenly yelled, “Get back!” “?!” He couldn’t see it, but his wife could. Lilias saw that when Sammael had suddenly changed directions earlier, he hadn’t done it by solely relying on his body’s physique. Sammael had slammed his feet on the ground earlier and an iron slab appeared that he used as a foothold to kick off from.  However, he didn’t just leave the iron slab on the ground after kicking off from it. Sammael’s free hand that wasn’t wielding anything because he had thrown this iron slab at Lilias in the initial part of the battle, was able to grab onto his weapon and hide it behind him. Lilias’s warning was already too late by then. Walter met Sammael’s two iron slabs with his two scimitars but didn’t see the third iron slab slamming down at him from above. His wife had warned him earlier so Walter was constantly looking around to see what trick Sammael had pulled but it was only in the last second when he felt the piercing sense of danger come from above did he move away from his head. Despite doing that, Sammael’s strike was still able to connect onto his shoulder. “Ugh!” Sammael didn’t stop there. His earlier attack had broken Walter’s posture and he immediately followed it up by letting go of his shield and punching the man right in the face.  He pushed the attack and continued slamming his fist onto Walter’s face relentlessly. Lilias didn’t watch on helplessly. She rushed forward and tied up Sammael’s free hand that was punching her husband and tried to restrain the fiend. Sammael wasn’t having any of it and loosened his resistance for a bit which surprised Lilias for a moment. This moment was all Sammael needed as he gave an abrupt tug on the whip with his whole body’s strength behind it.  He lifted Lilias into the air, careening straight towards him. He turned his body and immediately smashed his head into Lilias’s stomach, his horns puncturing through her armor. Lilias was only hurt by the recoil of the blow as her enchanted armor prevented Sammael’s horns from piercing into her body. She quickly recovered herself and kicked off of Sammael’s head while stabbing her dagger into his skull. She didn’t forget to use her whip to pull back her husband who was still disorientated from Sammael’s previous barrage of strikes that bloodied his face.  “Honey, are you alright?!” “D-Damn that monster...I’m fine. Thanks.” “We should retreat. We’ve bought everyone enough time and at least this monster’s been killed.” “He’s not dead yet!” “What?” Walter quickly got back up on his feet and blocked the two iron slabs that were flying in their direction.  “I stabbed my dagger into his skull! How?!” “I guess fiends are just built differently than the rest of us…” Walter grimaced. He quickly wiped the blood on his face away and readied his scimitars. Lilias and Walter were appalled when they saw Sammael get up from the ground with the dagger still stuck on his head. The fiend didn’t even flinch when it pulled the dagger out of his skull and threw it on the ground. Lilias quickly retrieved it using the weapon’s retrieval function. Only the weapon returned to her hand so the blood and brain matter that was stuck to its blade didn’t follow. “Damn monster…” Lilias mumbled. “Ahhh...I have to thank you for that. Now I can think straight again.” “!” “...What?” Hearing the coherent words that came out of the dark fiend’s mouth, the two practitioners were alarmed. “You can talk?” Lilias exclaimed. “What do you mean I can ‘talk’? Of course, I can…I have a mouth,” Sammael snidely replied. Since they were able to communicate, Lilias quickly repeated the question she had asked earlier before they clashed, “...You...you’re not Sammael of the Holy Order, are you?” “The Holy Order? Heh, while I am Sammael and was once part of that hypocritical group of blind and useless insects...but not anymore.” “So you are him! Wh-what are you doing here?! And why are you like that?!” Sammael cracked his neck and grunted. A dark aura whirled around his body as his injuries immediately began healing in the blink of an eye and all of the wounds he received from the earlier exchange disappeared. It was like the previous fight didn’t even happen. The two practitioners had solemn looks on their faces when they saw Sammael’s powerful regenerative capabilities. The fiend in question noticed their perplexity and asked, “Fascinating, isn’t it?” “...” “This is the power I received from my Master after he opened my eyes to the truth about this world―no, this universe!” Lilias and Walter gripped their weapons tight. They didn’t know what Sammael was talking about but they figured that the Master was probably the rumored Fiend Lord, Julius.  “I don’t know what you’re talking about...but you’re willingly on the enemy’s side?” Walter asked.  When Sammael heard this, he immediately frowned and glared at Walter. “Enemy? We weren’t the ones that came and attacked you humans.” “...” “Tsk, just like my Master said, you humans really are just a petty and hypocritical race of creatures.” “The fiends pose a threat to humanity―” “And who decided that?” Lilias had just spoken up but was then cut off by Sammael. “Who decided that we, fiends, are a threat to humanity?” “...” “Did mother nature decide it? Did the universe decide it? Or was it simply your one-sided sense of hypocritical justice? Or better yet, was it the church who decided that we were a threat?” Sammael had emphasized the ‘church’, but all of his words were oozing with venom. “Typical, one-sidedly trying to eliminate a whole race of people. Just like what you people tried to do with the dwarves, right?” “What? We didn’t―” “Wrong again! I could give a long spiel about your hypocritical nature, but that’s boring. My Master gave me a task and I intend to finish it. Since you won’t move out of my way, I’ll have to step over you.” “...Come try it.” “Oh, I most definitely will.” The earth began to tremble and this alarmed Lilias and Walter. They quickly spread out their senses and saw that the fiends were already upon them. “Below us!” “Dodge it!”
