The Human City

The next day, Julius and Eisha both went together to the elf town. They didn’t linger too long and soon after, they left for the human city. They only conducted business with the elves and Julius even purchased a few elven clothes for his wife. He’d have Proto modify them later, but he was quite pleased with the rather wide selection of clothing he bought. Most of the clothes were tailored to the elven woman who lived close to nature so the clothing was rather loose and exposing. He thought that they were perfect for Eisha since she would rather walk around their castle naked than being wrapped up in the rather tight-fitting one piece that Proto had gifted to her much early on. Today, Eisha was wearing one of those elven garments and Julius had an arm wrapped around her waist as he drove one of the wagons they acquired from the elves through the forest. It was only him and Eisha going to the human city. His Fiends’ appearances were a little too grotesque for the humans to bear. They might be mistaken for monsters so he didn’t bring them along. He also didn’t need to since Eisha and he was more than powerful enough to take care of themselves. It was only a human city, Julius didn’t think that there would be anything that could endanger them there. Passing through the forest, Julius and Eisha enjoyed the quiet and serene atmosphere. Unfortunately for them, the serenity was broken when a few scruffy-looking men and women jumped on the road and blocked their paths. “Halt!” Julius stopped the wagon and let go of his wife who had a dark look on her face. “These bastards dare to interrupt…” Julius didn’t hear her and only addressed the people who surrounded them.  “Is there a problem?” “Leave behind the woman and all your valuables! Or else we’ll kill you!” “Hehehe!” “She’s got a nice plump ass!” “Look at them melons!” “...” They were just your typical highway bandits but the dirty words coming out of their mouths angered Julius. He stood up and unlike what the bandits were expecting, he didn’t plead for his life or run away. Instead, Julius swiftly picked up his bow and immediately shot a few arrows to his left and right in quick succession. He killed his targets quickly and cleanly. His hostile actions caused the bandits to lag for a moment before they quickly rushed forward in anger to attack him but Eisha confronted them. They thought that the delicate-looking lady was a helpless damsel but they were wrong. Eisha displayed her inhuman capabilities by jumping off the wagon’s seat and zooming towards them mysteriously. She appeared in front of one of the highwaymen and clawed out his heart. “...What did you say about my ass~?” Eisha asked as she brandished her blood-drenched claws. “M-Monster!” Seeing the terrified looks on the humans’ faces, Eisha only giggled in response, “Hihihihi~” Eisha moved around like a ghost, reaping away the lives of the bandits around her. Over at Julius’s side, he hadn’t stopped shooting and continued to kill the bandits in front of him.  There was no mercy in the two’s slaughter as they effortlessly dispatched all of the bandits. When any of them tried to beg for mercy, the two ignored their cries and swiftly ended their lives. A quick and easy death, that was the mercy they provided for their enemies. The humans weren’t monsters and they were all just too weak and fragile. If they were soldiers, knights, mages, or even adventurers, maybe Julius and Eisha would have had to put in a little bit more effort. However, from the looks of things, these were just your ordinary bandits. The two finished cleaning them up and went about their way soon after. Their wagon trod over the bodies on the road as they continued forward. After another hour of travel, they arrived at the edge of the forest but before going out, Julius stopped the wagon to let Eisha wash off the blood on her hands and body. Eisha was a little upset because her dress had been stained with the bandits’ blood. It was now dirty so she couldn’t wear it. Luckily, they had bought a few clothes earlier at the elven town so she quickly changed into them.  If they didn’t have an objective today, Julius would have pounced on Eisha the moment she had stripped her bloodied clothes. It was tough for Julius to stay calm since his beautiful wife looked so inviting all the time. Earlier, the bandits all had raging fires burning in their eyes and groin when they looked upon Eisha just once. He had to look at her all day so it was a test of his willpower and frankly, Julius was quite proud of himself for being able to show so much restraint. It tempered his mind which was a good thing in his opinion. The only problem would be that Eisha’s beauty would likely attract some problems. To prevent this, he had bought a cloak and veil for her at the elven town and he had Eisha wear it. “My Love, put this on, okay?” “Hm? You want me to cover my face and body?” Julius nodded and said, “Yes, unfortunately, the humans aren’t like the elves. You saw and heard what those bandits wanted earlier from you. They can’t hide their lust and greed when they see someone as beautiful as you.” “Hehehe, honey called Eisha beautiful~” Eisha smiled brightly at the compliment before she quickly put on the cloak and veil. “Eisha will listen to Julius. Eisha will try and not attract so much attention later!” Julius kissed her before carrying her up onto the wagon. They followed the road and soon they arrived at the human city. The gate was bustling with activity as various groups and individuals passed through the gate. Julius noticed that the gate guards and the atmosphere were rather uptight. He understood the reason because over at the side of the entrance was a row of wooden spikes that had heads on them. “Ah, it’s the city lord and his cohorts. I guess the elves really did make an example out of them,” Julius said with a chuckle. “Mhm, that pig got what he deserves. Hearing the horrible things he was going to do to Ysolte quite frankly angers Eisha…” Eisha was reminded of the story Ysolte told her and she grew a little angry. She scoffed at the heads of the dead people before turning away. The humans didn’t take down those disgraceful things because they were incapable of doing it. The wooden spikes were magically created by the elves and they would only disappear after some time.  Climbing or getting too close to the spikes would trigger the attack-type nature magic that the elves had placed as a trap. Many soldiers had been killed due to this. They couldn’t even use their magic to burn down the spikes because the city lord’s wife wanted her husband’s head brought back intact. Despite being a lecherous and depraved lord, Viktor still had a family. Whether he loved them or not and whether they loved him or not remained to be in question. However, the wife did value him somewhat since she wanted her husband’s head intact.  They could only wait and let the humiliating display remain until the elves’ magic wore off.  After some time, it was finally Julius’s turn to enter the city. When they asked about his certification, Julius only showed a letter of recommendation from the elves’ Grand Elder. Despite the 2 sides’ hostility, a ‘human’ merchant that could trade with the elves was rare nowadays so they quickly let Julius and Eisha in after they issued them a temporary ID card. Since they were supposedly merchants, the guards said that they could get permanent ones if they registered at the city’s merchant guild. IDs were naturally important so Julius decided that their first stop should be there.  Thanks to the directions the guards amiably gave to him, Julius and Eisha were able to quickly find the merchant’s guild within the city’s commerce district. There was a cover over Julius’s wagon so no one was able to see the goods he had on his wagon, but they were piled up quite high. Most of the goods were from the elven town and some were the monster materials he harvested.  At the very least, his presence within the commerce district didn’t look out of place as wagons and people similar to his were moving up and down the road. The only difference would be that he was just one wagon with 2 individuals while the others had rows of wagons, carts, and carriages with many people guarding each one. Julius arrived at the merchant guild and went inside with Eisha to get their IDs. The merchant guild had a secure parking area for their wagon so neither of them needed to wait by the wagon. When they entered the place, the main hall was rather grand as a few large chandeliers hung overhead with many reception booths placed in rows to the left and right. Many people were bustling around or waiting in line in front of those booths. It was busy and noisy. Julius wondered how the receptionists even got things done with the hall being so loud. He looked around and found one booth which had a very short line.  He looked up and saw the sign above reading ‘Registration’. He and Eisha quickly moved towards the booth and once he got close, the sounds from the hall became muffled before going mute. “Oh?” “They used a Silence Barrier Spell, rather smart,” Julius said.  The receptionist, who looked to be a wizened old man, looked up at the young couple and asked, “Are you here to register as a merchant, chamber, or to register ownership of land?” “Oh, pardon me.” Julius stepped forward and explained what he wanted. Naturally, it was to register as a merchant so that he could get an ID. Eisha didn’t need to register since she would be marked down as Julius’s wife and by virtue of that, she’d get her own ID free of charge while Julius had to pay a fee for it. “First and foremost, we don’t let just anyone register as a merchant. Otherwise, everyone and their grannies will be one!” “Aren’t you a grandpa yourself?” Julius mumbled. “What’s that boy?” “Nothing...anyway, what do I need?” “After paying the 25 Gold fee, you’ll have to either pass a test and fulfill some conditions, or you can skip all that with a letter of recommendation from another merchant, or chamber of commerce.” “Oh...wait, would this letter of recommendation work?” Julius passed the recommendation letter he got from Grand Elder Hyacinth over to the elder. The old man widened his eyes a bit before saying, “You got a recommendation from that old sod?” “What?” Julius was shocked to hear the old man call the Grand Elder an old sod. He scrutinized the old man and noticed that his ears weren’t rounded like a normal human. Instead, they had a little bit of a sharp point to them. The old man noticed his scrutinizing look and quipped, “Never seen a half-elf, boy? Stop being rude!” “Huh? O-oh, yeah...sorry…” “Tsk, young people these days…” The old man shook his head while looking at Julius disapprovingly. The old man’s face looked clearly disappointed that Julius felt like he did something extremely wrong so he didn’t try saying anything witty in response like earlier. The old man stamped a few things before asking him some questions. “Name.” “Julius.” “Just ‘Julius’?” “Uhh, Julius Rivera.” Obviously, Julius wouldn’t register the ID under his own name. People might question his origins since the name could only belong to those of the Ephalerith Empire’s royal family.  Instead, he decided to register his name using Eisha’s family name, Rivera. Of course, Rivera wasn’t a well-known name. Eisha wasn’t a high-ranked nobility or anything. The Rivera family was only a trifling Viscount-ranked family and she was chosen from the 50 female candidates at that time to serve Julius only because she had the prettiest face. Julius knew about this, but he never once treated Eisha badly during their time at the Empire. He respected her for being the kind older sister that raised him and now he respected her as his wife. “Your wife?” “Eisha Rivera,” Eisha chimed in. The subsequent questions Julius answered smoothly and after a few stamps here and there, Julius and Eisha both got their IDs as well as a merchant’s certificate after waiting a few minutes later. The recommendation letter from the elves really worked wonders. It helped with their procedures in getting into the city as well as their ID paperwork. They didn’t even need to go through a test or anything. “Alright, Eisha, let’s go look around the city.” “Un!”
