Present Day
Amber was looking at the ring around her finger, she couldn't believe it that finally she and Lucas were engaged. They arranged this marriage for them both but they decided to postpone the marriage until Amber graduated from college, then, they postponed it again until she reached her dream to build a school five years ago in China, simply because China was her mainland. Now, after ten years, finally they were engaged.
She looked at the man who was sleeping right next to her, she knew he was still tired after the engagement party last night. She fixed his fringe and adored his handsome face. Her face was red when she was remembering how they made love last night after the party.
"Hmm... What are you looking at?" Half awake, he asked her.
"You're awake?" Amber asked him. "It's 5 AM. You have to go to work."
"Let me sleep more." He hugged her naked body tightly, making her as his bolster. "I'm tired."
"Yeah, you were rough and loud last night." She poked the tip of his nose with her index finger. "Wild Lucas."
"You told me to be aggressive." He opened his eyes. "I'm a total animal." He hissed.
"And I like that." She giggled.
He laughed too following hers, his index finger made a circle on her bare arm, nice and slow. She bit her bottom lip before kissing him on the lips.
"What was that for?" He asked her.
"Thank you for this ring and last night was amazing. I hope it would be always a night time between us." She was looking at his face.
"But I love morning too." This was his turn to kiss her lips. Then, they both were laughing because of their cheesiness between them.
"Hey, a week later, I'll go to China for maintaining my business there." He caressed her shoulder then, kissed it.
"Aww, who will seduce me again? I already miss you." She was being childish in front of him.
"I'll facetime you every day." Lucas told her and she smiled hearing his answer. He heaved a sigh, many times he was thinking about this one. He wanted to ask her but he was afraid if she was hurt by this question.
"What is it?" Amber asked him.
"This is bugging me every day." He confessed. "What did David tell you before he left?" He finally asked that to her.
Suddenly, he could see how her expression changed very fast and it amused him. "Will you trust me if I tell you this?"
"I'll trust you no matter what." He promised her.
"Will you still love me for the way I am?" Amber kept asking him with her sharp questions.
"Of course. Remember, no secret between us." Lucas reminded her of their promises. It had been a year since he was gone and Amber became sulky again.
"There's one more secret about me." Amber confessed to him and he was ready to hear that. "I have a son and he's with his father now but I don't know where he is." She told him what her father told her before he died.
"Y-you.. what??"
One Year Ago
Exactly a year ago after she heard her father's words about her child, immediately, she flied to Shanghai to search for him. Amber lied to everyone in the house including Lucas, her boyfriend.
She said to them that she wanted to go for vacation to release her frustration, Lucas insisted to come with her but she refused it. Everyone was surprised because usually, wherever she went, Lucas was always with her.
"What is it now?" Lucas asked her, his body leaned on the door while he saw her packing her bag as she hummed some songs.
"Nothing, I just want to be alone." Without even glancing at him, she kept packing her bag.
"Alone? Really? Everybody is asking me." Lucas said to her. "Let me come with you."
He could see her shaking her head, "No, I wanna enjoy my vacation."
"Hey, look at me, turn around." He approached her. He didn't like it everytime she did this to him, she seemed to ignore him. Then, she stood up and looked up at him. "What's wrong with you?"
"I wanna have 'me' time, can I?" Amber smiled at him, her hand caressed the side of his face. "I'll be fine."
Lucas flicked his tongue lowly, he rolled his eyes. "For how long?" He looked at her in the eye again, she seemed confused and she thought hard about that.
"A week, maybe?" She furrowed her eyebrows, looking at his expression, she could notice that he worried too much. "Oh, c'mon, it's not like I'm 17. I can take care of myself."
She got his permission, she knew he loved her a lot l, that was why he was worried if there was something bad happened to her but she assured him that she was going to be fine by herself. She tiptoed a bit to land a soft kiss on his lips, he didn't respond her even after she deepened her kiss towards him."I love you. I promise I'll be back soon in a week." She said to him but he was still pouting. "I won't go back if you're not smiling." She threatened.
Finally, he smiled a bit and it made her smile brightly. Without being heavyhearted, she flied to Shanghai. She booked a room in a hotel, she threw all her stuff, didn't care where they headed to and she rushed to go find a cab.
She told the driver the address and soon, she arrived there. Amber was standing right in front of Chris's house in Seoul city, her heart was beating very fast, she couldn't control it.
Amber knocked on the door, hoping that Chris would welcome her after these nine years being apart. She almost forgot how he looked like, her father erased all her memories about him, he burnt all his pictures, he removed his number from her phone, he changed her number. She couldn't contact him and vice versa.
"Good afternoon."
"Oh!" Amber was surprised. A woman was standing before her. A very beautiful woman with long hair and her son was crying right next to her. "Good afternoon."
"Pardon, who are you?" The woman asked her.
"I- I'm Amber. I'm searching for my friend who lives here." She told the woman.
"Your friend?" The woman asked her again.
"Yeah, his name is Chris. Chris Zhao." Amber told her again, hoping she knew something about him.
"Chris Zhao? You mean Chris Zhao, the architect?" The woman made sure about it.
Amber was surprised by her question, she didn't know anything about it. So, she just answered it randomly, "Yeah.. I guess."
"I'm sorry but he doesn't live here anymore. Five years ago, he moved to Canada with his family." The woman informed her.
"Canada?" Amber asked her for further.
"Vancouver. He brought his mother, his sister and his son." The woman told Amber and as soon as she heard that from her, her heart was broken. She came to this country all the way from America and she couldn't meet him in person. "Well, I can give you his address, he left it to me five years ago, I don't know if this is still update but you can give it a try."
"Thanks." She was thankful to her. "What about his number?"
"Ah, I can't contact him anymore, I guess he's changed his number. He's a busy person." She said that to Amber.
She excused herself in front of her, she thought about it a lot to go to Canada for him. She was a bit disappointed but at least, she could still track his trace to meet her son.
She went back to the hotel and laid down there, she got 10 missed calls from Lucas. Amber heaved a sigh reading his texts, she smiled a bit because of him. She thought only him who could bring happiness to her life. "I've arrived." She texted.
Then, her fingers texted something to him without her realization. "I'm going to Canada."
Only a few seconds after she sent it, she received a phone call from him. He was surprised because she just reached Shanghai then, she wanted to travel to Canada. She was out of her mind and Lucas couldn't tell the reason why.
"Three weeks later I'll go to Toronto for business trip. Just go there with me." Lucas said to her.
She looked at the paper that she held, she read Chris's address that the woman gave to her. Toronto wasn't her destination, Vancouver was. "I'm sorry, I'll call you back later."
"Hey, Amb-!"
She looked up at the ceiling above her, she didn't think twice to go there. She really wanted to meet with her son that she didn't know what his name was.
"Your son is with Chris. He's alive, I gave him to Chris the day after you gave birth to him. I told Chris to stay away from you... I'm so sorry... I'm sorry for everything. I did this for you.. I love you so much.. I worry about you too much.. I just don't want to destroy your bright future with Lucas.. I'm sorry.. I've been lying to you for nine years.. Forgive me... Amber.."
Amber was still remembering what her father said to her clearly. Her son was still alive and she wouldn't give up on searching for him everywhere. Even if Chris hid from her, she assured herself that she would find him and her son.
When she was reaching Vancouver, she went to the address that the nice woman gave to her. Without stopping her steps, her figure was standing in frot of the house. This was it, she thought. She would meet him now, but then, a neighbor passed her.
"Hey, miss."
She turned her head to see who was talking to her. "Oh, hi!"
"Who are you looking for?" The man asked her while he approached her.
"My friend, Chris Zhao." Amber told him. "He's my childhood friend."
"Chris Zhao? He doesn't live here anymore." The man told her..
"What? Where does he live now?" Amber asked the man.
"I don't know, no one knows. He traveled a lot, he moved a lot with his family. He's an architect, a very successful architect. He only lived here for a very short time. I didn't know him well but he's a very good guy. Look, he built me my dog's house." The man told Amber. "Oh.. and did you see the water fountain at central park? He built that too."
The man told Amber a story about Chris. The Chris that everybody liked, the Chris that everybody adored but he was very introverted about his private life so, nobody knew anything about him other than his kindness to people who was around him.
Amber groggily walked at the park where the fountain that Chris built took place. She heaved a sigh, losing his trace.
She recalled her memory about him when they were still together. She asked him to build her a big house with cozy room for her to read books, a room with musical instruments so that she could sing, record her voice, and play drums all day long. He promised her to build one for her someday. He told her that he would be a great architect in the future and she should see how he would do great.
She only smiled remembering about him, he was a nice guy. He was very attentive and kind. She loved that about him. She didn't know where she should go now, she lost her direction.
