Chapter One
The sleek black sedan rolled to a stop in front of the city hospital, its tinted windows shielding its occupants from the curious gazes of passersby. Inside, Christian Blake adjusted his tie with one hand, the other resting firmly on the handle of his wheelchair. His sharp jawline was set in a grim line, his stormy gray eyes betraying the weariness that no amount of tailored suits could disguise.
From the back seat, a small, curly-haired boy popped his head out, clutching a battered action figure. Liam, his five-year-old nephew, beamed up at Christian.
“Are we going to see the doctor with the lollipops?” Liam chirped, his voice bright and unbothered by the tension radiating from his uncle.
Christian sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Yes, and don’t even think about asking for five this time. One is more than enough.”
Liam grinned mischievously. “What if I ask nicely?”
“You could ask like a saint, and the answer is still no,” Christian muttered, wheeling himself toward the door.
As they entered the bustling hospital lobby, heads turned. Christian Blake wasn’t just any man; he was the once-proud heir of the Blake Corporation. Now confined to a wheelchair, his presence was a sharp reminder of the tragedy that had struck one of the city's most influential families. The whispers were like a shadow following him wherever he went.
“Is that Christian Blake?”
“Poor guy... you know, after the accident...”
“I heard he barely leaves his house these days.”
Christian ignored them all, focusing instead on Liam, who was busy waving his action figure at passing nurses like he was some kind of superhero ambassador.
“Keep up, Liam,” Christian called, his tone more gruff than he intended.
Liam trotted alongside him, clutching Christian’s arm as they navigated the hallways.
“Room 302,” a nurse directed them, handing Christian a clipboard. “Dr. Harper had an emergency, so he wanted you to get through the checkup with Dr. Carter today.”
Christian frowned, his irritation immediate. “Dr. Harper knows I prefer consistency.”
The nurse offered a polite but tight-lipped smile. “Dr. Carter is more than qualified, Mr. Blake. I’m sure you’ll be in good hands.”
Christian said nothing, his jaw tightening as he wheeled himself toward the room. Liam, oblivious to his uncle’s rising annoyance, happily skipped along beside him.
Inside the room, a young woman stood by the counter, focused on a tablet screen. Her dark hair was tied in a messy bun, and her sharp green eyes scanned the data with quiet intensity.
Dr. Elena Carter didn’t look up immediately. “Good morning. Give me just a second.”
Christian’s gaze narrowed as he took in her casual demeanor. Didn’t she know who he was? Most people tripped over themselves to acknowledge him. He cleared his throat, the sound loud and deliberate.
Elena glanced up, unfazed. Her eyes briefly flicked to his wheelchair before settling on Liam, who was peeking out from behind Christian’s chair.
“And who’s this little superhero?” she asked, crouching to Liam’s level.
Liam grinned, holding out his action figure. “I’m Liam, and this is Captain Blast! He’s here for his checkup too.”
Elena laughed softly, shaking his hand as though the toy were alive. “Well, Captain Blast, I’ll make sure you and Liam are both in tip-top shape.”
Christian arched a brow, unimpressed. “We don’t have all day, Doctor...”
“Carter,” she finished smoothly, standing to her full height. “And it won’t take long, Mr. Blake. I’m assuming you’re Liam’s father?”
Christian hesitated, the word catching in his throat. Before he could respond, Liam piped up cheerfully, “He’s my dad! He takes care of me, and we have pancakes every Saturday!”
Elena’s expression softened, but Christian’s jaw tightened. “Let’s just get this over with,” he said curtly.
As Elena examined Liam, Christian found himself studying her. She moved with an easy confidence, her tone kind but firm as she coaxed Liam through the checkup. Unlike the polished, superficial women he’d dealt with in his past, there was something refreshingly unpretentious about her.
“So,” Elena said, finishing her notes, “Liam’s in great health. Just make sure he keeps eating his vegetables.”
Liam wrinkled his nose. “Even broccoli?”
“Especially broccoli,” Elena teased.
Christian smirked despite himself but quickly masked it with his usual stoic expression. “Anything else?”
Elena hesitated, her gaze flicking to Christian’s legs. “Actually, there might be.”
He stiffened, instantly defensive. “I didn’t come here for a lecture about myself, Doctor.”
“It’s not a lecture,” she replied, her voice calm but firm. “But I’ve seen your medical history, and I know someone who specializes in cases like yours. If you’re interested—”
“I’m not.” Christian’s tone was like ice.
Elena crossed her arms, unshaken. “Fair enough. But if you ever change your mind, let me know. I don’t give up easily, Mr. Blake.”
Christian didn’t reply, wheeling himself toward the door. Liam followed, waving goodbye.
“Bye, Dr. Carter!” he chirped.
As they left, Elena watched them go, a flicker of curiosity in her eyes. There was more to Christian Blake than his icy demeanor, and she couldn’t help but wonder what had turned the once-golden heir into a shadow of himself.
Back in the car, Liam leaned against Christian’s arm, clutching his toy.
“I like Dr. Carter,” Liam said sleepily. “She’s nice.”
Christian stared out the window, his mind uncharacteristically restless. “Yeah,” he muttered, almost to himself. “She’s something, all right.”
As the car disappeared into the city streets, Christian had no idea that this encounter would mark the beginning of a journey—one that would unravel his past, test his strength, and change his life in ways he could never imagine.
