Episode1
Chapter one : the last straw
Mariam looked at her mother with a look that gave off so many emotions. You can call it disdain, disgust or whatever you seem suitable at that point, but to her, It was a look of pure disbelief.’ I cannot actually believe that this is coming from you, mother. Twenty-six years of nothing from him. Suddenly, you need me to play daughter to a man I have no idea how he even takes his coffee to begin with.’
“Black. He takes it black, though he is not exactly a coffee person.” She heard her mother respond. She rolls her eyes, muttered some inaudible words under her breath. ‘What was that young lady?” came the same voice she has enjoyed listening to all her life but right now, she was not so sure any more how she felt about it.
“I said, black, just like his heart and mother that was not the interpretation of my literal words. You should know that green, rainbow or beige, I really do not care how he takes his coffee. Mama, do not make me do this. Please? I do not want to meet him, not now, not ever. Che cazzo dici?” she swore in Italian and stormed out of the living room, slamming the door loud.
Once outside, she checked her phone, its almost six pm. She breathes out heavily, punched some numbers in her phone and waited till the other end clicked. “Hey girl, you are thirty minutes late to bringing yourself over here, and I know you declined but I still need your five cents in choosing the perfect outfit for tonight. Where are you?” the voice on the other end spoke immediately the call connected. “I am on my way Rebecca…”
“now that is something you call me if there is trouble cooking. Hurry up! We’ll need to fix your troubled mind first and my outfit right after.” The dail ends. Mariam laughed, got into her moms car and found herself driving through the busy evenings of new York.
“Can you believe her? I mean that’s the craziest thing I’ve heard since that pastor said women who wear red lipstick are possessed…” there was a brief silence, then Rebecca added, “or since Titi said she was getting married for a Canadian visa” the two ladies laughed .”It has really been a rough week for you Maria, quitting your job, having it rough and now this being sprung up on you and fortunately, my invite is still open. Let us not think about any of the things going wrong in our lives at the moment, live a little before going back to your old boring self love.”
Rebecca walked up to where mariam was fondling with strands of her hair on the sizeable bed for two placed beside the window, looking out the window pane, her countenance sad. They both met when they were fifteen, while taking ballet lessons. They both realized how terrible of a choice ballet was and dropped the lessons. They have always had each others back for a long time, though the same age but Rebecca seems slightly older, perhaps it has a lot to do with her life experiences and tough way of grabbing the bulls by the horn.
“or perhaps we could stay in you know, watch basketball wives, talk s**t about your boss, pretend your daddy issues were not knocking loudly on your door, be sad and happy at the same time” she added, waiting on mariam to say something.
“Or we could still talk s**t about my ex boss, play dress up as we actually get dressed to hit the club and have a wild night like planned. I’ve had more than twenty years to be sad. I want us to be reckless and happy tonight, hoping our decisions don’t complicate our lives further than necessary.” Mariam said, jumping down from the bed and tuned the music softly as they both smiled and started singing along to high school by Nicki Minaj.
“What do you think Patrick is doing right now?” Mariam asked Rebecca. Oh the desperate soul definitely might have had someone else employed, he is rubbing his disgusting palms on her bare skin any chance he gets, sounding like a goat being led to the slaughter house. Rebecca starts mimicking Mariam’s former employee ‘I told you to get these boxes into the back only when I’m here so I can supervise you closely.
“by supervise, you mean walk up unnoticed behind her, rubbing his body against her while screaming about how the little space in there is making his work hard enough. Oh please.
She has worked several jobs not suitable for a lady to make ends meet. Mariam then met Patrick, who owns a suitable mart, and worked there for six years. She finally reaches her breaking point after enduring repeated harassment from her boss. Fueled by years of silent sufferings, her mothers kidney failing at one point, she finally snaps and walks out, jobless but free.
After having some sort of mental breakdown, as she vents to Rebecca the previous week, she tried talking her into going clubbing with her, “just one wild night” she called it. Though turning her down and deciding to be in her shell, her mother sprung up this news about her long lost birth father wanting some sort of reconciliation with her, she finally gave in. a wild night can do no harm, that’s what she thought.
Nothing extremely or even slightly dangerous will happen. With that in mind, she is here with Rebecca, getting dolled up and ready for the night.
But who could have thought that this was not only going to be a wild night, but the beginning of a life she has always yearned for and an encounter so dangerous for someone with her paternal background.
“Sebastine de marco, most eligible bachelor, dangerously sexy, wealthy, ruthless with strong ties to the mafia rumors I guess, not like I mind anyways . Tell me my eyes are seeing things just four shots in.” Rebecca was blurting out words she could not piece together, because actually, she was paying no attention to anything happening around her.
Mariam looked up from her glass shot, scanning the club for the easiest access to the bartender, her eyes wandered off and back immediately to the young man sitting so relaxed in the close VIP section, a lit cigar in his hand and a smirk on his face with his eyes fixed on her, not blinking, not turning away. Trouble calls but for him, she is willing to entertain all shades of trouble. Just for tonight. She thought. He stood up and started walking towards them.
“Hello love.” Her mouth went dry and her brain went blank.
