ZANE The restaurant was quiet. Private. Exactly the kind of place where nothing could interrupt what I had planned. It was just me and Camille at the small table, candles flickering between us. The air smelled of roasted meat and fresh bread from the main course we'd just finished. Camile sat across from me, soft light from the candle catching her face, her laughter low and easy. I watched her talk, nodding at the right moments, smiling when she smiled, but my mind was miles away from her or the food. Inside, I felt a surge of satisfaction. Finally, everything was falling into place. I could see it in her eyes, the way her shoulders relaxed a little more each time we met, the cracks in those walls she'd built up after everything went to hell.
