chapter two

~ MYRA “R-Rhys…” I stuttered as he stared down at me. My heart pounded against my chest, and my breath hitched when he leaned closer. “Always bumping into me,” he murmured. His thick Italian accent sent goosebumps across my skin. “I-I didn’t know you were coming this way,” I lied nervously. The truth was… I knew exactly where he went after every class. A small smirk appeared on his face. “Liar.” Before I could react, he gently cupped my cheek, his thumb brushing softly against my skin. Heat rushed to my face. Oh my God. One touch from him, and I was already losing my mind. His dark eyes locked onto mine so intensely that it felt like he could see straight through me. “You like playing with fire, Myra,” he said quietly. God. The way my name sounded when he said it made my heart flutter. “I’d do anything for you,” I whispered honestly. He scoffed softly before dropping his hand from my face. “I don’t need you to do anything for me.” His eyes turned cold again. “You’ll never be enough for me, Myra. Get that through your thick skull.” And just like that, he walked away. Leaving me standing there, completely shattered. But even after hearing those words… I still loved him. If I wasn’t enough for him now, then maybe one day I would be. ✦ ✦ ✦ The girls were already inside the car when I climbed into the driver’s seat. “How was class, girls?” Riley asked excitedly. “Great,” Emily answered. “It was peachy,” I said dramatically before turning on the music. “But music will definitely make it better.” The moment the song started playing, all three of us screamed in excitement. I started singing loudly, moving my shoulders to the beat. Emily and Riley immediately joined in, dancing like crazy in the backseat while laughing uncontrollably. “Okay, hold on,” Riley said between laughs. “Since when did you learn all the lyrics?” “It just got stuck in my head,” I replied proudly. Honestly, the song had been my obsession since high school. Eventually, the girls became obsessed with it too because I played it almost every day. “Lunch is on me today,” Riley announced. I parked in front of a diner, and we all climbed out before walking inside together. We settled into one of the booths, sitting across from each other. Emily rested her chin on her hand. “So… how’s your man?” I immediately pursed my lips. “He told me I like playing with fire… and that I’ll never be enough for him.” Emily clenched her fists angrily. “If he hurts you again, let me know.” I laughed softly. “What exactly are you going to do?” “Catch a case.” Riley burst out laughing while I shook my head. “How dare he even say that to you?” Riley complained. The waiter arrived to take our orders before walking away. “He’s such an asshole,” I muttered. The girls immediately laughed. “And yet you keep falling harder for him,” Riley teased. I looked down at the table quietly. What could I even say? No matter how badly Rhys treated me, my heart still chose him every single time. “I can’t stop loving him,” I admitted softly. “I’m hopelessly obsessed with him.” Emily pointed at me dramatically. “You’re one to talk. Remember how crazy you were over your ex?” I gasped. “Excuse me? You literally cried over a man who cheated on you.” Riley started laughing while Emily smacked my arm. “Rude!” “Who’s obsessed now?” Riley teased. I immediately smacked her arm back. “You brat.” “You bitch.” We glared at each other for a few seconds before bursting into laughter again. Emily sighed dramatically. “Will you two ever mature?” “Never,” Riley and I answered together. That was just how we were. Always teasing each other. Always fighting. Always laughing five seconds later. And honestly? I loved them more than anything. ✦ ✦ ✦ Later that night, I lay across my bed, scrolling through my phone. Or more specifically… Scrolling through pictures of Rhys. God. He was such an annoying asshole. My bedroom door suddenly opened, and Riley walked in. The moment she saw my phone screen, she snatched it from my hand and rolled her eyes dramatically. “Seriously?” she groaned. “Can you stop thinking about him for one minute?” “Impossible,” I replied confidently. “You’re seriously hooked.” “As if you weren’t obsessed with your ex,” I shot back immediately. She grabbed a pillow and threw it straight at my face. I gasped before throwing mine back at her. Within seconds, we were having a full-blown pillow fight, laughing loudly. “f**k you, b***h!” Riley yelled after I accidentally hit her head and messed up her hair. “You started it, brat!” She tackled me again, and we both froze when my phone suddenly started ringing. I quickly grabbed it and saw my mum calling through video chat. Panic instantly filled the room. Riley hurriedly fixed her hair while I tried smoothing mine down. Neither of us wanted to hear another lecture from my mum about acting mature. I answered the call with an awkward smile. “Hi, Mum.” “Hey!” Riley said innocently beside me. Mum narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Girls…” she said slowly. “Were you two fighting before I called?” Riley and I immediately looked at each other. We were definitely caught. . . . 😛 ✔️ “You’ll never be enough for me.” — RHYS ✔️ “I’d do anything for you.” — MYRA ✔️ My girls singing the lyrics to Ride or Die Pt. 2. 🫣 ✔️ Myra singing every single word. ✔️ Riley being obsessed with her ex. ✔️ Riley and Myra having their usual immature fight. 😂 ✔️ Myra getting caught by her mum.
