Emotional & Mysterious

Lena Carter never believed in werewolves—until the night she caught her boyfriend cheating on Christmas Eve… and a powerful stranger stepped out of the forest claiming she belonged to him.

Kael is no ordinary man. He is Alpha of a hidden wolf pack, bound by ancient laws and instincts he cannot ignore. The moment he sees Lena, he knows she is his mate—the one fate chose for him.

But Lena is human. And the wolf world is dangerous.

As enemies circle and secrets about Lena’s past begin to surface, she must decide: walk away from the impossible… or embrace a destiny that could change both their worlds forever.

Chapter One: The Night the Snow Fell Silent
Lena Carter should have trusted her instincts. The moment Ethan insisted she come to the Christmas Eve lodge party—even after they’d barely spoken all week—she felt something off. But she went anyway. Because that’s what you do when you’re trying to save something. The mountain lodge glowed against the snow-covered trees like a postcard. Golden lights wrapped around the wooden beams. Laughter spilled into the cold air every time the door opened. Music thumped softly from inside. Everything looked perfect. It felt wrong. Lena brushed snow from her coat and stepped inside. Warmth hit her first. Then cinnamon. Then noise. People from school clustered in groups, holding red plastic cups and wearing sweaters that tried too hard to be funny. A fake mistletoe hung in the center of the room, swaying slightly from the ceiling beam. She scanned the crowd for Ethan. Didn’t see him. Her chest tightened. “Hey, Lena,” one of his friends said, avoiding eye contact almost immediately. That was the first real warning. “Have you seen Ethan?” she asked. A pause. “Uh… yeah. He’s around.” Around. Her stomach dropped. She didn’t want to look. She already knew. But she turned anyway. And there he was. Under the mistletoe. Kissing another girl. Not quick. Not confused. Deliberate. The world didn’t shatter dramatically. There was no loud crash or gasp. It was quieter than that. Like something inside her simply… went still. For a moment, she just stood there. Then Ethan’s hand moved to the girl’s waist, and something sharp snapped in her chest. She turned before he could see her. Before anyone could see her. The air felt too thick to breathe as she pushed through the crowd and shoved open the lodge doors. Cold air sliced across her skin. Snow crunched beneath her boots as she walked without direction, blinking hard against tears she refused to let fall. “Of course,” she muttered under her breath. “Of course it ends like this.” She didn’t know how far she’d walked until the music faded completely. The forest loomed ahead—tall, dark pines stretching toward a pale winter sky. Snow drifted gently from their branches, settling softly on the ground. The world felt… quieter out here. Still. Lena wrapped her arms around herself and inhaled slowly. She hated that it hurt this much. Hated that she’d ignored the signs. Hated that she felt foolish. A branch cracked somewhere behind her. She froze. Probably a deer. Probably nothing. Another sound followed. Lower. Closer. Not the wind. Her pulse quickened. “Okay,” she whispered to herself, “you’re officially being dramatic.” Then the trees shifted. And something stepped into the clearing. It was massive. A wolf. But no wolf she’d ever seen in documentaries or pictures looked like this. Broad shoulders. Thick silver-gray fur that caught the moonlight like steel. Eyes that gleamed—not yellow. Silver. It stood tall and still, watching her. Lena’s breath caught. She should be terrified. She wasn’t. Her heart pounded, but not with the sharp edge of fear. It felt… charged. Like the air between them carried something alive. The wolf tilted its head slightly. Snow fell in slow, soft spirals around them. And then— It stepped back into the shadow of the trees. Lena blinked. A heartbeat passed. Then a man stepped forward. Tall. Dark hair dusted faintly with snow. Barefoot against the frozen ground like he didn’t feel it. A dark coat hung open over his shoulders. And his eyes— The same silver. Her mind scrambled for logic. “There’s no way,” she breathed. He studied her like he’d been searching for something his entire life—and just found it. “You’re not afraid,” he said quietly. His voice was low. Steady. Controlled. Lena swallowed. “I should be.” “Yes,” he agreed. But she still wasn’t. The moonlight seemed brighter suddenly, washing the snow in pale silver. The stranger took one careful step closer—not threatening. Not rushed. Deliberate. Her pulse thundered in her ears. “Who are you?” she demanded, trying to anchor herself in something normal. Something real. “My name is Kael.” The wind shifted, carrying the faint scent of pine and something wild she couldn’t name. He looked at her like she was the only solid thing in the world. “And you,” he said softly, “are the one I’ve been searching for.” Her breath stalled. “I don’t even know you.” His expression didn’t change. “I know enough.” Something stirred beneath her skin. Not pain. Not fear. Heat. Her wrist tingled suddenly, sharp and fleeting, like static. She glanced down instinctively. Nothing there. When she looked back up, his gaze had sharpened. “You feel it,” he said. It wasn’t a question. The forest felt impossibly still. Even the wind had gone silent. Lena’s heart pounded harder. “What’s happening?” she whispered. Kael’s voice was calm. Reverent. “Something that hasn’t happened in generations.” And above them, the full moon burned brighter than it had all night. Unseen by either of them— Far beyond the trees… A wolf lifted its head. And listened.
