The message She then scrolled down to the end of the message and saw a familiar name. “Ryan.” Ryan. The artist. The one whose name she hadn’t been able to forget since the gallery earlier that night. His words echoed in her mind. "I think you might find it interesting." Emily stood there, the cool night air brushing against her skin, her mind a whirlwind of confusion. She knew she should keep walking, that David’s presence would haunt her for long enough. But for the first time in a while, the thought of something or someone else filled her with curiosity. As she stood there, staring at the screen, a figure appeared in front of her, a tall shadow against the bright lights of the street. It was David again, his face hardened now with something darker in his eyes. “I’m not done.” He said, his voice barely above a whisper. “You can’t just walk away from me, Emily.” Before she could respond, the sharp buzz of her phone interrupted them, and Emily looked down at the message once more, her heart pounding as she read it again. "I think you might want to see this." But this time, her thumb hovered over the screen as something pulled at her chest, something beyond the message and beyond the confrontation with David. The message from Ryan sat there, taunting her: “I think you might want to see this.” She felt a twinge of guilt. Was it too soon? Too forward for someone she barely knew to reach out like this? And yet, as much as she tried to shake it off, she couldn’t deny the pull of curiosity. But David was standing there, just a few feet away, and Emily couldn’t tear her attention from him. The cold air around her seemed to freeze. His figure loomed like a shadow over her thoughts, weighing heavily on her mind. “Emily, I’m not done.” His words pierced the silence, his voice hard, his body tense with unresolved tension. She looked up at him, finally meeting his eyes, but she didn’t see the man she had loved anymore. She saw someone who had betrayed her, someone who didn’t understand the pain he had caused. His expression was tight, as though he expected her to crumble under his gaze. “I think you should leave.” She said, her voice steady, the walls she had built around herself returning with force. David's jaw clenched, and for a moment, she thought he might argue again. But instead, he took a step closer, his eyes searching hers, his words softer this time. “You really think I’m just going to disappear after everything we had?. ” His voice was tinged with frustration, but there was something else in it, something that almost sounded like desperation. “No.” Emily shook her head, almost too tired to argue anymore. “You don’t get to come back and erase the past. I’m not going to pretend it didn’t happen.” David opened his mouth to speak, but Emily turned away, her feet moving before she could think better of it. She couldn't stand there any longer. She had already given him too much of her time, too much of her attention. “You don’t owe me anything, David.” She muttered, her heart beating too loudly in her chest. “And I don’t owe you a damn thing, either.” She started walking briskly toward her car, but she could feel David’s eyes burning into her back, making her skin crawl. His words followed her like an echo. “I’ll be here when you’re ready to listen.” She didn’t turn around. She couldn’t. Not again. When she reached her car, she slung her purse over her shoulder and pulled out her keys, her fingers trembling ever so slightly. But before she could unlock the door, she felt a sharp vibration in her pocket. The message from Ryan. She couldn’t avoid it any longer. With a deep breath, she tapped the screen to open it. There was no other explanation, no preamble, just a link. Her heart raced. She glanced back at David’s retreating figure, making sure he was out of sight before she hesitated one last time. And then, without thinking, she clicked the link. The video opened with a dimly lit shot of a room, and then the camera panned to a figure seated at a desk. Ryan’s face appeared, though he looked different than he had in the gallery. His eyes were more intense, the shadows beneath them sharper, but there was something raw in his expression. “This is what I wanted you to see.” His voice rumbled, low and steady, as though he were speaking directly to her. Emily’s breath caught as the camera zoomed in on his face. His gaze felt even more piercing through the screen than it had in person. He was studying something, some object just out of frame and then he looked up directly at the camera, as if noticing her for the first time. “I’ve been thinking about what you said. About how art should make you feel something.” Ryan continued. “But I think... it’s not just art. It’s the people we meet. The connections we make. They leave an impression, whether we want them to or not.” The video cut abruptly, and Emily’s eyes flicked over to the timestamp less than a minute long. The message had been brief but powerful, more of a statement than an invitation. He hadn’t asked for anything, just… shared something. The raw emotion behind his words left her unsettled. She thought back to their brief conversation in the gallery, the way he had looked at her with such intensity. There had been a quiet confidence in him, something she couldn’t quite place,an unspoken challenge. But was he trying to draw her in? Or was he just showing her a part of himself that he didn’t share with everyone else?. Emily felt conflicted. She had just seen David again ,heard his desperate words and yet, her thoughts kept drifting back to Ryan. She didn’t know why, but the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she wanted to understand him. There was something intriguing, something magnetic, about the way he made her feel. Before she could dwell on it any further, her phone buzzed again. Ryan: "There’s a piece of art in my collection that I think you’d appreciate. Would you want to come by tomorrow night? Let me show you.” Emily stared at the message, her fingers frozen over the screen. She hadn’t expected this. Was he genuinely interested, or was he just playing a game? Was she ready for whatever this might lead to?
