Chapter1
The meeting Emily James stepped out of the art gallery, her steps faltering for a brief second as she pulled her coat tighter around her. The evening air was crisp and cool, cutting through the warmth of the gallery’s atmosphere. She felt a strange tension in her chest, as if the evening’s encounter with Ryan Sullivan still lingered in her thoughts. There had been something about the artist; the way his eyes had locked onto hers, the way his words seemed to carry more weight than most. She couldn’t shake the feeling that their brief exchange had been significant, though she couldn't understand why. She needed to put it out of her mind. But as her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her back into the reality of the busy life she had been trying to escape for the past hour, everything changed. "Emily." The sound of her name was too familiar, and it stopped her in her tracks. Her heart skipped a beat, and her stomach twisted. She didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. She knew that voice. Her pulse quickened as her mind raced, and sure enough, when she did turn around, standing a few feet away was David, her ex. It had been over a year since they’d last spoken, since he’d broken her heart, and yet, it felt like it had all happened yesterday. Emily’s throat tightened as the memories rushed back to his promises, the lies, the betrayal. The world had shifted under her feet when she’d caught him in their apartment, with someone else. That betrayal had left her humiliated and shattered, and no amount of time had seemed to heal the wound. David’s eyes widened when he saw her, a flicker of guilt in them, but she could tell he was trying to mask it with an air of casualness. He shifted on his feet, clearly unsure how to approach her. “I didn’t think I’d run into you here.” David said, his voice hesitant, almost as if he were testing the waters. His hands were shoved into the pockets of his jacket, his posture defensive. “But, Emily... I think we need to talk.” She blinked, feeling a wave of nausea roll over her. Talk? After everything he’d done, everything he’d taken from her, the audacity of him to even think she would want to talk... “I’m not sure what you think we need to talk about, David.” Emily said, her voice far colder than she intended. The words were a shield, but they didn’t seem to reach the icy tightness in her chest. She crossed her arms, a barrier between them that she didn’t think she could let down. “You already said everything that needed to be said.” David’s face faltered for just a moment, his lips parting as if to speak, but then he sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair. “I know. I know I messed up. I hurt you, and I’m sorry for that. But that’s not why I’m here. I... I’ve changed, Emily. I’ve spent the last year trying to be a better man.” Emily’s eyes narrowed, her stomach turning at the words she had heard too many times before. She wanted to walk away, but something held her in place ,was it his words? Or the desperate look on his face? She wasn’t sure anymore. “No.” She said, shaking her head firmly. “You don’t get to come back into my life and pretend that everything can just be fixed because you’ve had a revelation. You don’t get to undo the hurt you caused.” Her voice grew steadier as she spoke, her anger simmering beneath the surface. "You broke me, David. And you don’t get to just waltz back in like nothing happened.” His eyes darkened, frustration flaring in his features, but instead of retreating, he took a step closer, his expression softening. “Emily, I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I swear, I never wanted to hurt you. Please, just let me explain…” "Explain?.” Emily’s laughter was bitter, almost cruel. “What’s there to explain, David? The fact that you cheated on me? The fact that you lied to my face for months? Or that you…” She caught herself before her voice could break, before the emotion she had so carefully buried could surface. David flinched, but he didn’t back down. "I know I was selfish. I know I hurt you more than I could ever fix, but…" "You’re right." Emily interrupted, her voice growing stronger, her pain surfacing in the rawness of her words. “You can’t fix it. So stop trying. You don’t get to come back and rewrite history, David. Not after everything you put me through.” She stood there, breathing heavily, her chest tight with the weight of the emotions she hadn’t allowed herself to feel in so long. She had fought so hard to move on, to rebuild her life, and now here he was, attempting to undo all that progress with a few empty words. “I think you should go.” Emily said, her voice cold and steady now. “You’re not welcome here. Not in my life, not in my heart.” David’s face darkened with something like hurt, and for a moment, she saw the man she had loved, the one who had promised her forever. But that man was gone, replaced by someone who thought he could waltz back into her life after destroying it. He opened his mouth to say something, but Emily didn’t give him the chance. She turned sharply and began walking away, her steps quick and deliberate. She didn’t need to hear any more. She didn’t need to see him anymore. Her heart was still pounding, a mixture of anger and grief swelling inside her. She had finally made peace with their breakup, with the way he’d torn her apart and left her to pick up the pieces. And yet, seeing him again felt like it was all fresh, like the wound had been reopened. Her phone buzzed in her pocket again, and she quickly pulled it out to distract herself. She glanced at the screen, needing something to break the tension, onl y to see a message from a number she hadn’t saved "I think you might want to see this.” Her face marked with curiosity as she fixed her gaze at her screen.
