Vera POV
As I sat on the balcony of my bedroom I heard a soft howl in the distance. I looked up, gazing into the distant woods, but there was nothing out of the ordinary to see. I listened very closely and sure enough I heard it again. Whoever it was sounded like they were in pain or trouble. I glanced around, but there weren't any pack members in sight. How strange. I left the pack house cautiously and kept my ears open, there it was again, the same howl. I can't shake the feeling of worry so I have to go investigate. I kept stopping and listening as I followed the howls into the forest. Was it howling, its now starting to sound like.. growling? There's something else, a different sound as well. Perhaps the clacking of metal? I wasn't sure but that's what it sounded like the closer I got. I followed it all the way to a dark path in the woods, for some reason it seemed like the sun has never hit this area. It's so dark and foggy. I was about to turn back when I heard it again, this time it was definitely the sound of metal, like chains. I continued on the strange path and noticed even the breeze had a strange sinister feel to it. I should definitely turn and go back, but I feel so drawn to the sound as if I know it and yet I've never heard it before. My nose suddenly began to burn and I quickly realized it wasn't fog at all, it was smoke…
I started hearing whispers of a man and woman both saying the same thing
”save her.”
my body was covered in chills yet I wasn't scared, at least not enough to go back home. Was someone seriously hurt? Who was it I was being led to? I finally came up to a small cabin hidden in the distance and in front of it a huge metal cage with what looked to be like a large dark wolf in it. Was this the “her" that needed saving like the voices said? As I got closer I noticed the wolf was lying curled up on its side with its back towards me. I immediately thought it was dead. It was chained up, but the chains were… strange.. they looked as if they were dripping with silver liquid. Were they melting? As I went to step closer to it I heard a twig break to my right. Fear settled over my body covering me with goose bumps.
I wasn't alone…
I slowly turned my head to see who or what it was. It's growl roared through my soul as I was met with the wide open mouth of a wolf. In a snap it clasped it jaws around my face and head.
GASP! My eyes shot open as I woke up unable to breathe, I grabbed my chest and stumbled falling to my knees as I tried getting out of bed gasping for air. What the hell was that!! My body was riddled with fear, I cant believe that just happened. Why on earth would I dream something like that! It was horrifying!
Brayden busted out of the bathroom and picked me up setting me back on the bed he held the side of my face gently and I could see the panick in his eyes
“Vera are you okay!? What happened?”
I tried to talk but nothing come out, I was still trying to catch my breath, I felt like the air had been ripped from my lungs. He got on the bed and cradled me in his lap whispering softly as he rocked me,
“breathe baby breathe.”
I slowly began to calm down and catch my breath. He asked me again what happened and I described every detail of what I saw including my horrifying death. I could tell he was worried, he brushed his fingers through my curls and kept whispering
“it's okay. You're safe now. I got you.”
After I pulled myself together and made my way downstairs to the kitchen, I took my usual seat at the bar and rested my head on my crossed arms.
“Oh no my love, did you have a bad night?” Jenna's concerned voice came from the large fridge as she made her way towards me with a glass of water.
“ Worst night of my life.” I said tiredly
“ What happened?”
I told her about the dream, no NIGHTMARE, detail to detail just as I did for Brayden. She was shocked and oddly silent.
“Scariest thing I've ever experienced.”
I broke the silence and grabbed my cup of water staring down at the ice floating within it.
“Something wrong?”
she asked as she glanced at me through her eye lashes.
"Something wrong? With the water?" I asked questionably, kinda taken back by her question. I looked at her puzzled and she nodded. well now I think there is.
“No, just not thirsty for water this time.”
I slid the glass to the side
“I think a cup of coffee is due for this morning.”
“Okay! That was a crazy dream girl. I couldn't imagine dreaming something so scary.” Her voice perked back up, but I kept my eyes on her. Why did she act so weird about the water? I glanced over at the glass again I thought I saw… something.. she set my coffee down and immediately snatched up the glass of water and poured it down the sink. Am I crazy or is Jen acting strange today…
“ By the way V, I got me a matching necklace to the one I got you for your birthday so now you can think of yours as a friendship necklace instead and hopefully get rid of some of the bad memories of that day.”
.. what a odd thing to say and bring up at a time like this, I put on a smile, hiding my suspicions. “That's nice Jen. Thank you for that..”
she pulled her necklace up closer showing me the pendant on it. It was kinda like mine, the idea is the same, but where mine is deer antlers hers is… devil horns?
“ I liked these better, brings out more of my frisky side if you know what I mean.”
She giggled and shot me a wink and I forced a slight laugh out as well. She sat a nice plate of eggs, bacon, sausage, and gravy in front of me. I picked up my coffee and there it was again! Just like I thought I saw in my water! Something.. shimmery, like mica powder or glitter floating around on the top . What the hell was this girl doing.
“ Ya know Jen I am so so sorry but after that dream I don't think I can bring myself to eat or drink anything.” I gave her a sincere apologetic look. I wanted to point it out and ask her about it , but she gets whiney when someone says anything negative about her food or kitchen skills. She smiled and took them from me, eating a piece of bacon off the plate.
“ No worries girl just means more for me. I hope you get to feeling better though. I'm so sorry that dream has ruined your morning.”
She sounded sincere but I can't get over the weirdness of all this. I thanked her again and walked out of the pack house, I grabbed my phone and immediately called Brayden.
Ring…ring..
“Hello beautiful, are you okay?”
“ Bray I need coffee and Jenna's being weird. Do you think alpha Ryan and Luna Aris would let us go to town and get some.”
“ Suuure I don't see why not. We will have to make it quick though.”
“ Thank you. I'll meet you at your car.”
“I'll be there shortly, love you.”
“I love you.”
I hung up and went to the pack house parking area to braydens red mustang. It didn't take long for him to meet me there. As we drove out I told him about Jenna's reaction to my dream and the stuff I seen in my coffee and water. He thought it was weird as well, but he suggested it was a new dish detergent or something may have gotten on the dish sponge so we kinda brushed it off and just enjoyed the drive to town.
Wolf packs don't really like being so close to humans so their territories are marked deep in surrounding forest and mountains. It's usually a good fifteen or twenty minute drive just to get out of the woods but some packs can take thirty minutes or longer. Red Thorn packs drive is about sixteen minutes and another ten on the road just to get to the nearest town.
