Chapter 11 Barry was just putting the finishing touches to dinner—meatloaf, green beans and mashed potatoes—when he heard the front door bang against the opposite wall. “It’s my f*****g dad. I just know he’s behind it!” Jimmy snarled. “We don’t know that,” Jake said more calmly. “He’ll have found out about Mom coming here for my birthday and…” Barry couldn’t hear any more because the men had turned into the dining room. Barry imagined cattle rustling, cutting of fences, poisoning of livestock. He gripped the handle of the carving knife more tightly and thrust down into the meatloaf. “f*****g evil piece of work,” he muttered. Knowing his cowboys would be hungry—when weren’t they—he poured his special recipe mustard sauce into a jug and set it on the tray with the rest of the food.
