Chapter 1: The Transfer and the Promotion
The iron gates of Sapling High looked less like a school entrance and more like the jaws of a giant monster waiting to swallow Brooke alive. She gripped the straps of her backpack so tightly her knuckles turned white, taking a deep, shaky breath of the crisp autumn air. New school. New town. New start. Just blend in, Brooke. That’s all you have to do. Her family’s sudden move mid-semester meant she was the ultimate outsider. When she walked into her assigned homeroom, Room 104, nobody even looked up. The room was a loud, chaotic mess of teenagers throwing paper airplanes, laughing over TikToks, and completely ignoring the teacher, Mr. Harrison, who looked like he had given up on life about ten years ago. Brooke slid into an empty desk in the very back, pulling her oversized hoodie over her head. She didn't want to make friends. She just wanted to survive. But Brooke had a secret weapon: she was incredibly smart. Back at her old school, studying was her escape from reality. Two days later, Mr. Harrison handed out a surprise pop quiz on advanced algebra. While the rest of the class groaned and slammed their foreheads against their desks, Brooke’s pen flew across the paper. To her, the numbers were like a puzzle, a comforting language that never changed no matter what city she lived in. On Friday morning, her quiet survival plan shattered. "Brooke Evans? Please come to the principal’s office," the PA system crackled to life, her name echoing through the hallways. The entire homeroom went dead silent, staring at her as she gathered her things. Brooke’s heart hammered against her ribs. What did I do wrong? I’ve barely even spoken to anyone! She walked into Principal Vance’s office with shaking knees. But instead of a stern lecture, the principal was holding her quiz paper with a massive, red 100% circled at the top. Next to it was her academic file from her previous school. "Brooke, I’ve been looking over your placement scores," Principal Vance said, adjusting his glasses with a warm smile. "To be frank, you don't belong in Room 104. Your scores are entirely off the charts. Effective immediately, you are being promoted to the AP Honors track. Your new homeroom is Room 302." Brooke blinked, her mouth opening slightly. "Wait, right now? Mid-semester?" "Right now," he nodded, handing her a new schedule. "They are a bit ahead, but I have a feeling you’ll catch up just fine." Five minutes later, Brooke found herself standing outside the heavy oak door of Room 302. The hallway was completely empty, the silence heavy. She could hear the muffled, articulate voice of a teacher lecturing inside. This wasn't the chaotic, noisy basement class she had just left. This was the top tier. The elite. She knocked softly. "Come in," a sharp voice called out. Brooke pushed the door open. The classroom was pristine, filled with rows of perfectly organized desks. The teacher, Mrs. Albright, stopped writing on the whiteboard and turned around. "Ah, you must be Brooke. Class, listen up," Mrs. Albright announced, clapping her hands together. "This is Brooke Evans. She’s joining us from the standard track because she completely aced the placement curriculum. Let's make her feel welcome." Brooke felt a hot flush of embarrassment crawl up her neck. Every single head in the room turned in unison. It wasn't the casual, lazy glances of her old class. These eyes were sharp, evaluating, and intensely competitive. As she stood there under the blinding fluorescent lights, she realized she hadn't blended in at all. She had just walked straight into the spotlight.
