CHAPTER 1: The Dedication
The storm had ended, but the world still dripped. Rainwater slid from the pine branches and pattered on the muddy ground. Selene Veyra stood at the edge of the forest, shivering in her thin cloak. Today, she would leave her home forever. Behind her, the village was quiet. No laughter. No voices. Everyone knew what today meant. The elders called it a dedication. They used the word like it was holy. But it was nothing holy at all. It was a sacrifice. Selene had been chosen to save her pack. She would be sent to the Alpha King of the Silverpine Dominion. A man the stories called more beast than human. No one sent to him ever returned. Her mother stood in the doorway of their small hut. Her hands trembled as she clutched her shawl. Her lips moved like she wanted to speak, but no sound came out. Selene couldn’t look at her for long. If she did, she would break. A wooden cart waited on the path. Two grim guards sat at the front, eyes straight ahead. They were the Alpha King’s men, here to collect the offering. Selene climbed into the cart. The wood was wet and cold under her fingers. Her heart beat hard as the cart lurched forward. Her mother disappeared from sight. --- The road to Moonwood was long and lonely. Tall pines lined both sides, their branches heavy with mist. Every now and then, the wind rattled through them, sounding like whispers. Selene pulled her cloak tighter. She didn’t want to hear the whispers. They felt like warnings. For hours, the cart rolled on in silence. No one spoke. Even the horses seemed muted, their hooves dull against the damp road. Selene’s thoughts wandered to the stories about the Alpha King. He ruled the forest and every pack that lived in its shadow. He demanded loyalty and blood. He obeyed only the Moon. They said he was cursed. They said no woman could survive him. Selene swallowed hard and stared into the trees. Once or twice, she caught a flicker of movement. Something dark and fast, too big to be a fox. Maybe a wolf. Maybe something worse. She closed her eyes and breathed slow. She told herself it was only the forest. But the forest felt alive. Like it was watching her. --- By late afternoon, the trees parted. Selene’s breath caught. The Silverpine fortress rose ahead, half-shrouded in mist. Black stone walls climbed high into the gray sky. Towers pierced the clouds like jagged teeth. A dark river curled around its base, reflecting the light of the dying sun. The place looked less like a home and more like a beast waiting to swallow her. The cart rattled over a bridge and stopped at the gates. One guard jumped down and opened the door. “Out,” he said. Selene stepped onto the wet stone. The air here felt heavier, thick with cold and shadow. Even the mist seemed to cling to her skin. The iron gates groaned open. Out of the darkness, a figure appeared. An old woman, wrapped in a black cloak. Her hair was gray and tangled, but her eyes were sharp and bright. “You are the dedication,” she said. Her voice was dry, like cracking leaves. Selene nodded. She could barely speak. “I am Agnes,” the woman said. She turned and began walking. “Follow me.” --- The village inside the walls was silent. Small stone houses huddled in the mist. No children played. No doors were open. Every window was shut tight. Selene felt eyes on her, but she never saw a face. The air smelled of pine and something faintly metallic. It reminded her of blood. “Do not wander after sunset,” Agnes said without looking back. Selene hesitated. “Why?” “The forest does not forgive,” Agnes said. Then she said nothing more. --- Her room in the fortress was small and cold. A narrow bed. A cracked table. A single window that looked out at the endless trees. Selene sat on the bed, listening to the quiet. She thought of her pack, of her mother’s shaking hands. They were safe because of her. But she was alone now, trapped in a place that felt like it had teeth. Night came fast. The moon rose, silver and full, painting the room in cold light. Selene could not sleep. Then it came—a howl, long and deep. It rolled through the night like thunder. Her heart jumped. Another howl answered. Then a third. The sound wrapped around the fortress walls. It was beautiful and terrifying, like the song of a predator. Selene thought of Agnes’s warning. She thought of the stories about the Alpha King. She knew she should stay in her bed. But something pulled her. --- She opened her door and stepped into the hall. Shadows stretched across the stone floor like claws. The air smelled of damp earth and fur. Step by step, she made her way to the courtyard. The great doors to the outside were unlocked. She hesitated, then pushed them open. The night air was sharp and cold. Mist swirled around her feet. The forest loomed ahead, dark and alive. Selene’s skin prickled. Every branch seemed to shift. She walked into the trees. The sound of her heartbeat was louder than her footsteps. A rustle came from her left. Then a soft growl. Selene froze. Her eyes caught glints of light in the shadows. Dozens of them. Eyes. Yellow and red, fixed on her. They belonged to wolves—huge, black, and still as death. Her breath hitched. She stepped back. A branch snapped behind her. Selene spun around. A figure emerged from the mist. Tall. Broad. Barefoot. Golden eyes glowed in the dark. His skin caught the moonlight, and his hands ended in claws. Half-wolf. Half-man. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said. His voice was low, rough, and dangerous. Selene couldn’t speak. He stepped closer, the wolves moving with him like a shadow. “You belong to me now.” Selene’s pulse roared in her ears. The wolves circled, and the night swallowed her scream.
