Like a bad idea
This is a terrible idea. Ethan knows it the second he reaches for his phone. He barely knows you. Just his assistant. Efficient, quiet, always organized. The kind of person who handles problems before they even reach his desk. But tonight the babysitter cancelled. His backup is out of town. His meeting starts in forty minutes. And his daughter is sitting on the couch coloring dinosaurs like nothing is wrong. Ethan exhales slowly, rubbing the back of his neck before sending the message. Out of everyone he could ask… He asks you. Not because it's comfortable. Because he has no other choice. Text message: "I have a urgent meeting soon. I need you to babysit Lily. I'll pay you extra this week." It’s ok… I’ll be there in the next 30 min *Ethan stares at the screen for a beat longer than he should. Three dots. Three words. No pushback, no questions about why the hell his assistant is being asked to babysit on a Friday night.* *He sets the phone face-down on the kitchen counter and exhales through his nose.* *This is crossing a line. He knows it. The clean separation between work and everything else — the one he's maintained since Lily's mother left, the one that keeps his life from bleeding into something unmanageable — he's punching a hole right through it.* *But the meeting is with Hargrove. Hargrove doesn't reschedule. Hargrove doesn't care that you're a single father. Hargrove cares about numbers and handshakes and showing up when you said you would.* Lily, he says, crouching beside the couch. *She doesn't look up from her coloring book — a green triceratops with what appears to be wings.* Someone from Daddy's work is coming to stay with you for a little while. Her name is Catalina. *Lily drags a purple crayon across the page.* Is she nice? She's... very organized. *Lily considers this, apparently satisfied, and returns to giving her dinosaur a second set of wings.* *Ethan straightens up, tugging the knot of his tie tighter. The apartment is — fine. Lived-in. Lily's shoes by the door, a juice box on the coffee table, the stack of case files he brought home fanned across the dining table. He considers cleaning up, then stops himself. He's not performing for his assistant. She's doing him a favor under duress, and he's paying her for it.* *He pulls on his jacket, checks his watch. Twenty-two minutes.* *His hand hovers over the phone again. He should send something else. Instructions. Lily's bedtime. What she eats.* *Instead he pockets it and waits by the door.* I’m at the door *The knock comes and Ethan's hand is already on the handle. He opens it — and for a half-second his brain does something inconvenient. It registers you outside of the office. No blazer, no lanyard, no fluorescent overhead turning everyone the same shade of tired. Just you, standing in his doorway, in his life, where you don't belong.* *He steps back. Lets you in.* Thanks for doing this. *His voice is clipped. Professional. The same tone he'd use handing you a file across his desk, except he's standing in a hallway that smells like crayons and apple juice.* I know it's short notice. *Lily peers over the back of the couch like a periscope. Just eyes and the top of her head, brown curls wild from an evening of rolling around on cushions.* *Ethan gestures vaguely between the two of you.* Lily, this is Catalina. Catalina — Lily. Hi, *Lily says. Then, with the devastating directness of a five-year-old:* Do you like dinosaurs? *Ethan doesn't wait for the answer. He's already pulling his keys from the counter, tucking his phone into his jacket pocket, running the mental checklist because if he slows down he'll have to sit with the fact that his assistant is standing in his living room looking at the crayon drawings on his fridge.* Bedtime's eight-thirty. She'll push for nine — don't let her. *He grabs a folder from the dining table.* There's mac and cheese in the fridge if she's hungry. She knows how the TV works better than I do. Emergency numbers are on the fridge. *He stops at the door, keys in hand. Turns back. Something shifts behind his jaw — a flicker of something that isn't quite discomfort but lives in the same neighborhood.* I'll be back by ten. Eleven at the latest. *He holds your gaze for one second too long. Then he's gone.* *The drive to Hargrove's office takes twenty minutes. Ethan spends eighteen of them thinking about the meeting and two thinking about the pair of sneakers you were wearing. Not heels. Not flats. Sneakers — like you'd been home, settled into your night, and he'd dragged you out of it.* *He parks. Kills the engine. Sits for a moment with his hands on the wheel.* *She's fine. Lily's fine. Catalina is competent — more than competent. She once reorganized his entire Q3 calendar in an afternoon without asking a single clarifying question. She can handle a five-year-old and a box of crayons.* *The meeting is sharp and efficient. Hargrove is Hargrove — numbers, handshakes, a scotch Ethan declines because he's driving home to a kid. They close on the Bradford account in under ninety minutes. Hargrove claps him on the shoulder like they're old friends. They aren't.* *By 9:47, Ethan is back in his car. He checks his phone. No texts from you. No missed calls. That either means everything is fine or the apartment is on fire and Lily has convinced you fires are normal.* *He drives a little faster than he should.* *The hallway is quiet when he reaches his floor. He turns the key slowly — some instinct telling him not to bang through the door — and steps inside.* *The apartment is dim. Lamp on in the living room, TV off. The juice box is gone from the coffee table. Lily's crayons are in their box, lined up on the cushion like soldiers. And on the couch —* *He stops.* *Lily is asleep. Curled on her side with her coloring book hugged against her chest, mouth slightly open, one sock on and one sock off. And you're there, sitting at the other end, her feet tucked against your leg.* *Ethan sets his keys down quietly. Something tightens behind his ribs — something he does not name.* You didn't have to clean up. I think everything is good… something else you need? *The question hangs in the dim apartment like it's waiting for him to do something stupid with it.* *He doesn't.* No. You've done more than enough. *He says it quietly, conscious of Lily three feet away, her breathing slow and even. He shrugs off his jacket, drapes it over the back of the dining chair, and crosses to the couch. His hand hovers over Lily's shoulder — then he scoops her up in one practiced motion, coloring book and all. She makes a small sound against his neck, fists his shirt, settles.* *He carries her down the hallway without another word. The bedroom light clicks on, then off. A drawer opens and shuts. Two minutes, maybe three.* *When Ethan comes back, he's loosened his tie, top button undone, and he looks — not softer. Quieter. Like the version of him that exists after hours, the one nobody at the firm has ever seen. He stops at the edge of the living room and looks at you still sitting on his couch, in his apartment, at ten o'clock on a Friday night.* *The line he drew between work and this — it's already gone. He erased it himself when he sent that text.* She didn't give you trouble? *He leans against the doorframe, arms crossed. It's not really a question. The evidence is all over the room — the organized crayons, the missing juice box, the kid who went down without a fight. You handled it. He knew you would.* *Something pulls at the corner of his mouth. Not quite a smile.* I'll add it to your check. *A beat.* And I owe you one. Personally. Not as your boss. *His eyes stay on you — steady, direct, the same way he looks at a contract he's about to sign. Then he pushes off the doorframe.* I'll drive you home. It's late. thanks for that… sorry to bother you *The apology lands wrong. It hits some surface in him that doesn't know what to do with it — not because it's unwelcome, but because it implies she thinks she was an inconvenience. She wasn't. He called her. He dragged her out of her Friday night to sit in a stranger's apartment with a five-year-old and a box of crayons. If anyone should be apologizing, it's him, and he already doesn't love that he had to.* Don't do that. *His voice is low, firm — not harsh, but the kind of tone that closes a door on a thing before it gets comfortable.* You drove across town on a Friday night because I asked. That's not a bother. That's a favor I didn't deserve. *He pulls his keys from the counter. The metal clicks against his wedding ring — except there's no ring. Hasn't been one in three years. Just the habit of reaching with that hand, the ghost-weight of something he stopped wearing long before he stopped feeling it.* Come on. *He nods toward the door, holding it open.* Car's downstairs. *The hallway is too quiet. Just their footsteps and the low electric hum of the building settling into night. He walks half a step ahead — not leading, just moving, because standing still in that apartment with the lamp light and the crayon-smell and you on his couch was starting to feel like something he could get used to. And getting used to things is how you lose them.* *The elevator is small. He presses the lobby button and stands against the opposite wall, giving you the space. His jaw works once, then stills.* *He doesn't look at you. He looks at the floor numbers ticking down.* For the record — Lily asked if you're coming back. *He leaves it there. Doesn't say what he told her.* she’s so cute, anytime I can, I will do it. I hope this not generate any un comfortable things between us.
