Echoes of Guilt
The rain hammered against the window, each drop a relentless echo of Evelyn’s pounding heart. Outside, the city was cloaked in darkness, the streets slick and shimmering under the dim glow of flickering streetlights. Her studio was a sanctuary turned prison, walls lined with canvases that seemed to stare back at her in silent accusation. The room was cloaked in shadows, only faintly illuminated by a flickering lamp that cast uneven, trembling light across the chaos. Paint brushes lay abandoned in half-empty jars, and canvases dripped with dark, chaotic colors—swirls of red, black, and gray—like wounds bleeding onto the surface. The air smelled of turpentine and despair. She sat motionless, eyes fixed on a blank canvas, trembling as if the very act of creation had abandoned her. Her hands trembled uncontrollably, clutching her knees. The ghost of her brother’s memory haunted her—Liam’s innocent smile, the fateful night, and the crushing guilt that refused to fade. Her phone buzzed suddenly on the cluttered table, breaking the heavy silence like a gunshot. Evelyn’s breath caught. Her fingers hesitated, trembling as she reached out and stared at the screen: Unknown Number. A surge of fear and curiosity collided inside her. Her pulse quickened. She stared at the glowing screen, then slowly, with a shaky hand, answered. “Hello?” her voice was a fragile whisper, barely audible over the rain. A low, velvety voice responded—calm, intimate, yet unsettling. “Sorry.” Evelyn’s stomach clenched, her breath hitching. She pulled back slightly, trembling. “Who’s this?” A pause, long and deliberate. Then the voice returned—more insidious. “You know who I am.” Her mind flashed with a thousand questions—who could it be? Someone from her past? A stranger? Her heart pounded harder, her palms sweaty. “What do you want?” she managed to whisper, voice trembling. “Just… to remind you,” the voice said softly, almost regretfully. “Sorry isn’t enough anymore.” The line went dead. Silence stretched for a moment, heavy and oppressive. Evelyn stared at the phone, her mind racing, her body frozen in place. Shadows flickered across her paintings, distorted and flickering like ghostly apparitions. The storm outside grew louder, rain pounding relentlessly against the windows, mimicking the chaos inside her mind. Her breathing was shallow, each inhale ragged and uneven. She whispered into the silence, almost to herself, “Sorry….” Her eyes darted around the room, searching for something—anything—to anchor her. But only the darkness and the relentless rain responded. A cold shiver ran down her spine. The message, the voice, the shadows—something sinister was awakening in her world. And she knew, deep down, this was just the beginning.
