Chapter Sixty First, I hear the engine coming up the road, and then the crunching of the gravel before the car slides to a stop. “Signore Di Luca?” A man’s voice calls out. “It’s the sheriff. Are you in there?” “Here. We’re here,” I shout and wave the flashlight to signal we are in the office. The sheriff pushes the door open with his foot, holding a flashlight in one hand and his gun in the other, as other deputies crowd behind him and spread throughout the building. He sees Angelo’s bloody chest and rushes over, holstering his gun and calling the station on his radio. “What happened here?
