Chapter 1 Beneath The Moon
Naidaska. Nestled between silver-peaked mountains and frost-laced woods, it was a land bathed in the cold kiss of the moonlight. The White Sky Pack ruled here strong, proud, and ancient. For generations, they guarded these lands with claw and fang, led by alphas chosen not only for their strength, but for the blood that ran through their veins. At the heart of this pack was Lyra Whitestone, daughter of the reigning alpha, Elias Whitestone. To many, she was a symbol of elegance and strength, her snow-white hair a mark of her family’s sacred lineage, her silver eyes reflecting the spirit of the moon itself. But few knew the quiet ache she carried, the absence of a mother who had walked away when Lyra was barely a year one. No one knew why Selene left. Some whispered madness. Others, betrayal. But all Lyra remembered was watching her mother disappear into the woods one cold evening, leaving her alone with a grieving father and the impossible expectations of a legacy she didn’t ask for. Still, Lyra smiled. She trained. She endured. She loved. And she loved Damon Vale, the Beta’s son. Charming, magnetic, with eyes like a storm and a smirk that softened the weight on her shoulders, Damon made her feel seen. In his arms, the whispers of abandonment faded, and for a time, Naidaska felt peaceful. They often met in the old watchtower at the edge of the woods, lying together beneath the open sky. “I don’t want this night to end,” Lyra whispered as Damon trailed kisses down her collarbone. “Then let it last forever,” he murmured, brushing her hair aside. “Just you and me, Lyra. No rules. No duties. No burdens.” She laughed softly. “You say that like we can just run away from everything.” He smiled, eyes flickering in the moonlight. “Maybe we can.” She didn’t notice the flicker of tension in his jaw or the sharpness behind his grin. All she saw was the boy who called her ‘mate.’ That evening, Lyra was summoned to her father’s chamber. Elias sat by the hearth, his face pale and sunken. Age and sickness clung to him like shadows. The firelight danced across his wolf-marked hands as Lyra approached. “You asked for me, Father?” Elias looked up, his eyes tired but unwavering. “Sit, my child. We must talk.” She obeyed, heart heavy. “Lyra, am afraid I may not live to see another full moon,” Elias said, voice roughened by years of command. “The sickness in my body spreads fast now. And our people… they need a leader.” Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. “Father, what do you mea...” “You will be Alpha, Lyra,” he said firmly. “I’ve made my decision.” Shock stole her words. “But… Are you sure am ready? The elders.. Thorne... what will they say?” “They will listen,” Elias interrupted. “Because I chose you. You have the strength. You have the heart. And this is your birthright.” She lowered her eyes. “What about Damon? He’ll be at my side..” Elias’s expression hardened. “There's something about Damon I don't trust.” Lyra looked up, frowning. “You’ve never liked him.” “Because he is not what he seems. I don’t care what fate says. There is a difference between true love… and fate. Don’t let your heart blind you.” Lyra tried to speak, but the lump in her throat silenced her. She left her father’s chamber that night with more questions than answers and a heavy, unfamiliar fear. The next day, Elias stood before the pack, his voice hoarse but commanding. “I name my daughter, Lyra Whitestone, the next Alpha of the White Sky Pack.” The wolves bowed. Most, in solemn acceptance. But not all. Thorne Vale, the Pack’s Beta, stood tall and unblinking, his face a mask of restrained fury. His silence spoke louder than any words. After the gathering, Thorne approached Elias in private. “You’re making a big mistake,” he growled. “She’s not ready.” “She will be,” Elias answered coldly. “You will respect my decision, or step down.” Thorne clenched his fists and walked away, his pride burning. Later that day, the halls of the estate echoed with hushed congratulations. Lyra felt a strange mix of honor and dread. Damon wrapped her in his arms and whispered how proud he was, how he’d always believed in her. “I want to rule beside you, Lyra,” he said, kissing her forehead. And she believed him. In the dead of night, Thorne met in secret with Garrix, the Pack’s Gamma. They stood near the edge of the forest, cloaked in darkness. “She cannot lead,” Thorne hissed. “She’ll destroy everything we built.” “She’s Elias’s daughter,” Garrix replied, uncertain. “She has the blood.” “But not the spine,” Thorne snapped. “I will not serve under her. And neither will you.” Garrix hesitated. “You’re talking treason.” “I’m talking survival,” Thorne said, eyes gleaming. “Let's kill her… and I take the Alpha seat. You become my Beta.” Garrix was silent for a long time. Then… he nodded. "How do you propose we do it?", Garrix asked. Thorne smiles mischievously, "Don't worry, I already have everything set in motion" Later that night, Lyra found a note tucked beneath her window sill. Meet me at the outskirts before dawn. I need to talk. Alone. —Damon Her heart skipped. She dressed quickly, her excitement rising like a tide. She didn’t notice the trail of whispers behind her as she slipped out of the estate and into the night. Damon stood at the tree line, leaning casually against a stone. “You came,” he said. “Of course,” she smiled. “What’s going on?” He took her hands in his, brushing a thumb over her knuckles. “Let’s leave, Lyra. Just us. Start over. Forget this place.” She blinked. “Leave Naidaska?” He nodded. “I love you. I don’t care about thrones or titles. I want a life with you, far from this madness.” Her heart twisted. “I… I can’t. I can’t abandon my people. My father needs me. The pack needs me.” Damon let out a slow breath, stepping back. His smile faded. “I figured you’d say that.” She frowned. “What do you mean?” “I’m sorry Lyra,” he whispered. Before she could react, pain bloomed in her chest. She gasped, staggering back. A blade, silver. He held it firmly, eyes hollow. “D-Damon…” “You were never supposed to become the alpha,” he said quietly. Lyra collapsed, her breath shallow, the world blurring around her. Damon turned away. And left her to die. (To be continued...)
