“Are you okay?” Danaya ’s voice sounded beside her and she tried as hard as possible to remain in control. This same woman had hurt her. This same woman had thrown her over the rails and she had died. How could she feel normal around her? She did not even know what she would do next.
It was strange hearing that voice now. Before, she had believed Danaya truly cared for her. Danaya had been the one who moved into her house to “help” when her eyesight worsened, the one who fed her, guided her, and reassured her. A loyal friend, that was the illusion Isabella had clung to.
But now?
Now she knew better.
“Yes,” Isabella lied softly.
“Wait, I hope you are not having cold feet now that you have given the company to Adam. Now, he is the CEO after signing the documents. I have also given it to a trustworthy lawyer.” Danaya beamed, sounding way too excited.
Isabella realized she was right; she had truly been reborn three years ago, and the mere thought of it made her shiver. She didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. Why only three years? Why couldn’t it be before she knew her at all?
And even worse, she was reborn after she had handed her family’s company over to Adam.
She needed to take it back.
She needed to reverse everything.
But how? At this moment, Adam held all the power.
“You did the right thing, Danaya , Adam is a good man.” Danaya caressed her hand and she let out an anxious smile.
Her parents’ deaths had been the first blow. Shortly after the wedding, they had died in a car accident. She was too grief-stricken to function properly, too broken even to think. Out of trust, and desperation, she handed Adam the position of acting CEO. Her parents had always told her never to give the seat to Adam, to take that role herself someday. She never understood why they distrusted him, even though they gave him a position in the company. They still insisted that he never took the position of the CEO.
But she loved him. She believed in him. And so she ignored their worries.
Then her vision began to fail. Doctors said it was caused by excessive crying and stress. Her sight slowly blurred in ways that she could not explain. Danaya moved in with her then, insisting she help her through the difficult period. She thought that her friend was a good one and she was even helping her now that she was going through s**t.
Her medications… her daily pills… her checkups… everything had been orchestrated by Danaya . Isabella had allowed her to take over, she had let her think that her best friend merely loved her. All the care Isabella once appreciated now felt like venom. Now that she knew the real truth, she did not even know how to behave anymore.
Now, with a clear mind, she wondered about something far more horrifying than all that she had found out.
Were Danaya and Adam connected to her parents’ deaths too?
Were they involved too?
She prayed they weren’t.
Because if they were… then she had unknowingly caused her parents’ death by trusting the very people who destroyed her. She had believed strangers over her parents because they warned her even when she started to hang around Danaya , they warned her and tried to break off their friendships many times. They even offered Danaya money many times but she never took it.
Right now, she knew that she had to act very quickly, she had to shift her focus and undo all that had been done by an enemy she thought was a friend.
She had to regain her sight.
She had to reclaim her parents’ legacy.
She had to take back the company she had handed over to Adam.
Danaya touched her shoulder lightly, and she shrugged.
“Are you truly okay?”
Isabella forced a small smile.
“Yes.”
Danaya relaxed, satisfied that Isabella sensed nothing.
“Adam and I will be leaving for the office soon,” she said while adjusting Isabella ’s blankets.
How ironic. Isabella had been the one who suggested Adam hire Danaya into the company. Her vision had already begun to blur, and she wanted Adam to have someone trustworthy close to him at work.
Trustworthy.
She nearly laughed at the memory. She had been so stupid to trust both of them. So stupid.
Danaya reached for a small container on the table and shook it gently.
“Here, take your medicine.” Her voice softened with fake warmth. Prior, Isabella had never been able to read the fake in her voice. She had never been able to.
“The doctor said you can still regain your sight, so don’t stress yourself.”
Isabella stayed still as Danaya placed the pills in her hand. She lifted them to her mouth obediently.
Danaya then handed her a glass of water.
“Did you swallow them?” she asked, watching her closely. She could feel her eyes pressing tightly on her.
Isabella pretended to swallow and nodded.
Danaya waited a second longer to be sure. Then she smiled.
“Alright. Your food is beside you. If you need anything, call me.”
Isabella nodded again.
As soon as Danaya left and the door clicked shut, Isabella turned her head and spat out the pills into her palm. The small white tablets landed with a soft tap. She stared at them, her fingers trembling.
In her past life, these pills had never helped her.
Instead, they had slowly destroyed her vision.
Right now, she could still see faint light ... .nothing more, but enough.
Before her death, she had been plunged into absolute darkness.
She had swallowed these pills faithfully for years, trusting Danaya .
Never again.
She hid the pills beneath her pillow and exhaled slowly.
She needed a doctor. A real doctor, not the fake one provided by Danaya and Adam. She needed someone completely separate from them.
But she had no family left.
No friends.
Only a traitorous husband and a best friend who wanted her dead.
She needed help.
And then a memory struck her like lightning.
The man from five years ago.
The man involved in the night that ruined her wedding.
The man Danaya said she had orchestrated to destroy her wedding and Adam’s feelings for her.
Although she said Adams never loved her, only interested in her because of her money.
⸻
Memory From Five Years Ago.
Isabella woke up in a hotel room she had never seen before. Her head throbbed, and her limbs were weak. A man lay beside her, just as confused and alarmed. She sat up abruptly trying to grasp the situation around her.
“What… What am I doing here? What did you do to me?” she demanded after she saw the huge man next to her. She did not care that he was handsome with broad shoulders, the kind that made every woman scream out of character.
The man looked just as shocked.
“What did you do to me? I don’t even know how I got here.”
Damn, he was fine. Isabella couldn’t help but think. Beauty was one thing that could never be denied.
He looked to the side and saw blood on the bed, where she had sat. His eyes went wide watching her, unable to believe that as grown as she was, she was still a virgin.
“You… were you a virgin?” He stammered, finding it hard to actually believe.
Isabella snapped at him through tears.
“Yes! And today is my wedding day, so congratulations, you ruined everything!”
The man frowned.
“Are you implying I forced you? Maybe you were the one who wanted to play around before getting married.”
The argument worsened and they had to check the CCTV footage.
Only then did they realize the truth:
They had both been drugged.
Both were victims.
Afterward, as they prepared to leave, the man handed her a card.
He apologized, saying that if she ever needed help, truly needed it, she should contact him.
The card revealed who he was:
The youngest billionaire,
The CEO of Nova Tech Solutions.
But she never called him.
She hated him then, hated the memory, the pain, and the shame.
She only kept the card because she loved to hoard things. She was that kind of person.
Now, she realized something else:
Danaya had been behind the drugs.
And the man had been just as much a victim as she was. Perhaps she had drugged him as well but Isabella knew that Danaya didn’t want any good for her.
However, Isabella needed a new plan. She needed that card.
Somewhere in the house, in a room she once used for storing personal items, she had kept it. She had kept it for no reason but now she understood. She might need him. He might just be of great help.
Guiding herself with one hand on the wall, she slowly made her way out of the bedroom. She headed toward the living room, trying not to make a sound.
Just as she approached the doorway, voices stopped her in her tracks.
Adam’s voice.
She froze.
“Has Isabella taken the drugs?” he asked.
“She has,” Danaya replied confidently.
Adam let out a scoff.
“Don’t you think it’s pointless? She’s already blind. There’s nothing she can do now. And since she signed over her father’s company to me yesterday, she’s nothing more than a useless blind woman. I don’t want you spending time with her anymore. I want you with me.”
Isabella ’s nails dug into her palms. That was her husband. The same man who said that he loved her. Her heart sank. She hated the thought of betrayal but then she had been betrayed by the people she trusted the most.
Danaya ’s voice turned cold. “Still, love, I want her completely blind. She can still see traces of light. I don’t want that. I want her to see nothing.”
“If that’s what you want,” Adam murmured.
Then Isabella heard the sound of kissing.
Her stomach twisted painfully.
Their words sliced into her, each sentence sharper than a knife. Her heart pounded loudly…so loudly she feared they might he
ar it.
She could not bear it.
She turned to go back, rage and pain pooling at her belly
But as she stepped back… she missed her footing and then
She slipped.
