What a Big House
Moving into Brontzville was hard for Diana. Not because of the city itself, but because of what the city represented for her. Brontzville was a beautiful city, big and bustling, noisy but calming. Brontzville was a place to get away without leaving behind your daily activities, however, this wonderful city represented something else for Diana.
The city was the door to her new life. No more milkshake Monday's with her best friend Marshall, fancy Friday's with her mom at their favourite restaurant, or wild dance parties with her best friend Farah. These things would never happen again for Diana. Her friends would end up forgetting all about her and find someone better who enjoys milkshakes and crazy dance parties.
That was fine with her though, she wanted her friends to be happy with or without her. Diana was pulled from her thoughts suddenly when the car came to a stop. She looked out of the window at her new house. It was bigger than the old one.
"Come on Diana, go pick a room." Her mother said as she walked to the door to unlock it.
Diana took her mothers advise and went inside as well. The foyer was large, to the right was a big family room and to the left was a coat closet and the kitchen was next to it. The stairs were in the center and like every 'mansion' they lead off into two directions only to meet at the same floor. Diana always found that weird. Why have one set of steps split into two sets if they were both going to the same place?
She didn't complain though, the issue was trivial and hardly called for much thought. Ignoring this perplexing dilemma, Diana made her way upstairs to pick out her new room. Choosing to go down the right hallway Diana found a large game room, a theatre, and three bedrooms. She felt like this was a good decision and made her way into the room next to the theatre.
She stopped suddenly and thought twice about her room choice. Coming to the conclusion that the room was a bad choice she chose the room that was farther away. The noise from the theatre room would distract her if her mother had friends over after all.
Diana sat on the floor picturing how she would like the room to look. A bed in the far right corner, a wardrobe in the far left, her bathroom would be right next to the wardrobe which made sense. Maybe a desk across from her bed, for her work, right next to the door. Diana nodded her head agreeing with herself. 'This will be good.' She thought.
With that thought Diana began walking downstairs to find her mother to talk about her room design idea. Diana's mother was on the phone in the family room. The conversation sounded serious and Diana wasn't the type to demand attention when her mother was serious. The woman was scary when she went into business mode. The idea could wait until later.
Diana went outside deciding that she would find a good place around to draw. She went to the car, grabbing her sketch book and pencil case before pulling out her phone. She texted her mom telling her that she would be out for a while. Remembering that she had seen a park close by, Diana decided to go draw there.
After approximately 10 minutes of walking, Diana was faced with an almost empty park. The park was almost empty due to the person sitting at the bottom of the slide, but when the person looked up at the noise of Diana's approach they immediately got up and left. Diana shrugged off the event, it was hardly eventful, and went to the bench that sat off to the side of the playground.
She opened her sketchbook to a new page and pulled out her pencil, drawing the landscape in front of her. She was pulled into another world as she drew to her hearts content. Every line, every curve, every imperfect shape was captured on the page and made beautiful.
Now Diana wasn't conceded nor did she have a big head and gloat about her talents, but she knew that her art was beautiful. Her favourite art style being still life only made the drawing better. After she put away her pencil and sketchbook, Diana got up and began her trek home.
Even though she was sad about having to leave her home, her friends, and her life behind, Diana was going to make the best out of this situation. The walk home seemed longer than the walk to the park as Diana was stuck in her head, thinking of everything that had caused such a drastic change in her life.
The yelling, the fighting, the throwing of hurtful words and vases. All the crying and pain would not be forgotten, but Diana would surly forgive and move on. She didn't believe in holding grudges or thinking ill of others. Finally, after what felt like ages later, Diana was in front of her new home.
Though the house was beautiful, Diana was apprehensive about entering. It was such a large house, and the feeling of silence and loneliness would definitely swallow her whole. Taking a deep breathe, Diana walked into the house. Her mother was no longer in the family room having a heated conversation.
Diana checked her phone and saw that she had been gone for a little less than an hour and a half. Her mother had texted her to be home within two hours, so Diana had nothing to worry about. The house seemed too quiet though. While it was larger than her old house, it wasn't larger by much.
Diana decided to ignore the silence, no matter how deafening, and go showering before dinner. However, when Diana was on her way to her room, she could hear noise coming from the theatre room. Peaking her head in, Diana saw her mother, sitting in one of the comfy looking recliners, watching a movie.
Diana's mom turned to her and motioned her over to sit down as well. Diana sat next to her mother and hugged her. They curled up together in the seats and watched the movie. Diana loved that, after everything that happened, her mother was always there for her and that they could enjoy each other's company without having to say anything.
"What do you think about doing this?" Her mother asked. Diana looked at her in question, waiting for her to continue.
"I mean watching movies every now and then." Diana's mom clarified.
Diana hummed in thought before answering, "That sounds nice. We can watch movies every Friday to kick off the weekend." She said smiling to herself.
"Sounds like a nice new tradition." Her mom commented and Diana nodded in agreement.
After their short conversation they grew quiet and continued to watch the movie playing. Diana recognized it was The Addams Family. The old movie was still hilarious even after watching it so many times. The Addams family was a quirky, but funny family that, as a kid, Diana had always wished she had. Though, she wouldn't trade her mother for anyone else.
Diana guessed the serious talk could wait a little while longer.
