Alone

Sebastian’s POV Something snapped in my head when I saw her Gamma wrap his arms tenderly around her and slightly lean his face into her hair. No man should ever touch her like that, no man but me. I had planned to play it cool, take a drink to calm my nerves, and ask to speak with her privately. I wanted our first interaction to be intimate, but my control was slipping as her scent kept invading my senses. Then I saw him take her in his arms. Any restraint I had was used up when I thought she was Alpha Easton’s Luna, and now that it was just her Gamma touching her, I had zero restraint left. I didn’t realize it, but a snarl bubbled up from my chest and I gripped my glass of whiskey so hard that it shattered into a million pieces. Jay and Victor looked at me like I had lost my mind. It felt like I had. The next few moments were a blur. One second, she was in his arms, the next she was ordering him and her Beta to stand down. They jerked to attention at her words, and she didn’t even bother to use her Alpha tone. Damn. She commanded total respect from them. Then she spoke directly to me and began walking my way. Her long legs moved like honey, and her hips swayed as she asked me another question. I couldn’t hear anything except her perfect lips say my name. Her eyebrows drew upwards and her dark eyes seared my soul. I knew I had to get close to her. I knew I had to let the world know she belonged to me. Screw intimate and gentle. I’m an Alpha wolf. I charged towards her and pinned her to the conference room table that was behind her. I skated my hands along her sides, bringing her hands above her head, her hair wildly fanning around her face. She looked surprised for only a second, and then steely resolve replaced the shocked look in her eyes. I leaned in closer, captivated by her scent. I wanted her. I needed her. She was mine. I leaned forward and ran my nose up the length of her neck from collar bone to chin, inhaling her sweet scent. She arched her back in response to my lips brushing ever so softly against her jaw. Her breathing hitched and her heart began to beat faster. When I exhaled, I let out a deep growl and proclaimed: “MINE!” I knew everyone in the room would hear me loud and clear. When the word left my mouth, I expected her to claim me back; to hear that sweet voice claim me as hers. I waited for what felt like eternity. But that wasn’t what happened next. Using her legs, she took me by surprise and flipped me over from on top of her and then had me pinned down with her hands on my wrists by my shoulders. While I had her in a more s****l position, she had pinned me down in a submissive position. I growled in delight. She was feisty and I could tell by this move alone she wouldn’t be a submissive mate. She looked at me intently, her eyes filled with a mixture of anger, sadness, and lust. The moment seemed to last forever. Her eyes soon melted into one emotion: anger. Her lips were set in a hard line as she looked over every inch of my face. Suddenly, she rolled off of me and walked out of the room without a word, leaving me and everyone else stunned. I sat up on the table and looked around the room. My Beta and Gamma were shocked, their eyes big as saucers. Her Beta and Gamma looked like they were ready to kill me, their muscles tensed for a fight. Her Beta female, who looked way too much like her to be anything other than her sister now that I got a good look at her, slipped out of the room to follow her. The older Alphas that had been talking to Alpha Easton smirked with amusement as Alpha Easton whispered something to them. I jumped off the table and made my way toward the door when I was stopped by her Beta and Gamma. They were pretty big dudes but I was bigger, and I knew I could take them. “What do you think you’re doing?” I snarled at them. “You just attacked our Alpha, you’re lucky that all we’re doing is blocking your way out” her Gamma sneered. This set Jay and Victor off, who flew across the room and were instantly at my side. “Did you just threaten me?” I asked, with my lips twitching at the humorous thought. “Did you just attack our Alpha?” her Beta spat back. The tension was thick in the air. Alpha Easton walked over and cleared his throat. “Gentlemen, I think there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding,” he said with a small smile. He then turned to me “Alpha Sebastian, I believe I heard you lay claim to my daughter while you had her, uh, pinned to that table?” he raised his eyebrows at me and cut his eyes to the table. I looked at Alpha Easton, realizing that in my haze, I definitely pounced on top of his daughter, laying claim to her right in front of him. The daughter of arguably the most powerful Alpha in the world. But I didn’t care. “Yes, Alpha Easton. She is my mate” I replied, looking him square in the eye. “I was afraid that was the case” was all he said before he clapped me on the shoulder and looked towards the door. I looked at him, bewildered, as he shook his head slowly “My boy, you have no idea what kind of woman your mate is. You are in for it.” James’ POV I had to get out of there before I muttered that one dangerous word back to him. Those four letters that would seal my fate and throw away everything I dreamed of and worked my whole life for. Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. I could hear someone following behind me, and I prayed it wasn’t him. I looked towards the door I had just stormed out of and saw my sister. Her face had the same expression on it when something juicy happened on The Bachelor. I stopped and leaned against the hallway wall with my head tilted upwards towards the chandelier, trying to force the tears back to wherever they came from. “Ummm, so you just found your mate!? I knew it was only a matter of time and it would happen!” she gushed, reaching to give me a hug. I quickly dodged her arms and moved to the other wall away from her. I needed something sturdy to support me while I processed what had just happened. “I didn’t want to find him. I don’t need him. I’m going to be 25 soon, I can be Alpha without him. I can’t be mated to another Alpha. No. This is my birthright and he is a threat to that. To our pack!” It felt like the world was spinning as I choked out the words. “JJ, he is your MATE. He is your other half. You can’t just walk away from that” “Yes. Yes, I can. I can reject him. I can reject him and save our pack” “You’re going to reject your other half just to keep some title? JJ, you’re not thinking clearly. He is your mate. He’s meant to make you stronger” “Irina, I was born to be Alpha. Not someone’s mate” “JJ, you were born to be both. You CAN be BOTH” she said with conviction in her dark eyes. I snorted and rolled my eyes. “What? Ask another Alpha to submit to me and give up his title? That would never happen! We’ve heard the stories that the Opal Moon pack’s Alphas are always ruthless. Why would an Alpha of a strong pack give up his position and pack for me?” “Well, he might, but that’s not what I meant. No, JJ, I mean that you can merge the packs. Packs haven’t merged for centuries, but they can. Look: just talk to him and get to know him. I’m sure your mate would never ask you to give up your birthright. You two were made for one another and destined to be together. This is your destiny!” Irina looked at me with pleading eyes. I knew she only wanted for me to be happy. She had the mate bond with Wren and knew how special it was. I knew she also remembered how devastated I was when I didn’t feel the mate bond with Mason, and how hard it was when we decided to end our relationship. All she’s wanted since was for me to find my mate and find happiness. I took a deep breath. I knew if I avoided this situation it would never go away. I squared my shoulders and decided to have a conversation with my ‘mate’. Mason’s POV I watched as this Alpha, Alpha Sebastian, talked with Alpha Easton. Wren had stepped out of the room to check on Irina and James. James and I dated all throughout middle school, high school, and even into college. I was so sure that she was my mate. We shared everything together, and she was everything I could have ever dreamed of in a mate. She was smart and strong as hell, determined, and beautiful. She never backed down from a challenge, and she pushed me and everyone in our pack to be the best we could be. I remember us both anxiously waiting years for us to both turn 18. I turned 18 first, and a few months later so did she. When a werewolf reaches maturity at 18, they are able to find their mate. There’s this incredible pull when you find them: Your inner wolf goes crazy, their scent is the most incredible thing you’ve ever smelled, and you become overwhelmed with a need to be with them. For almost three years, James and I analyzed if what we felt for one another was anything like the legendary mate bond. We did everything we could to bring out its intensity and wondered if because we were together before we turned 18 what we felt already was the mate bond. Her scent was beautiful, like fresh flowers, and I wanted to be with her all the time. My heart ached when she wasn’t around. But as time went on, we realized that no matter how hard we tried to force it, we weren’t mates. What we felt was for sure a powerful love, but we weren’t mates. In a world where we weren’t werewolves, she would have become my wife. But we were werewolves, and somewhere out there we had our destined mates. She became stubbornly opposed to finding hers, but wanted me to find mine. We decided to remain friends and I would still be her Gamma. I’m not sure who was more heartbroken when the decision was made. Soon after we decided to just be friends, she left for school abroad. I guess it was her way of fleeing the breakup by putting an ocean between us. And I will admit, having her away for extended periods of time helped heal my broken heart. I didn’t have to smell her, feel her, or even see her for months at a time. Eventually, we returned to normal. But I could still feel her pain when I looked into her eyes sometimes. I would see her face crumble a little when the subject of mates was brought up; it was subtle, and Wren and I along with her family were probably the only ones who noticed. She made it very clear she was not searching for a mate, or even wanted one. This concerned the pack elders, who wondered about the future of Blood Moon after James. When she returned from school, the elders, our fathers, and our team sat down to discuss the future of the pack. It was clear that James and I were not mates at this point, and so they wanted to know what the plan was for Blood Moon’s future. When she was questioned about finding her mate, she simply replied she didn’t need one to rule, that she was content to wait until she was 25 to rule without a mate. She sat there, stoic and emotionless as they tried to persuade her to attend more meetings with her father to possibly find him. She dug in her heels and made it clear she would do no such thing. I think that’s why she’s waited until the Alpha’s Circle meeting to show her face….James is stubborn like that. After hours of failing to convince her, the elders brought up the elephant in the room: her heir. When asked about carrying on the Laurent name or if the title would fall to Wren and Irina’s first born, she said when she was ready she would find a sperm donor and have a pup of her own as her heir. She had no problems raising a pup without a mate in order to carry on the Laurent name and bloodline. Again, her face remained emotionless as she laid out her plans. But I knew inside she was dying. When we were together, she would talk about wanting a big family with lots of pups. But she would always put the pack and the Laurent legacy before anything else. Even her own deepest hopes and dreams. I realized in that meeting that during the time after our breakup, she must have thought long and hard about what her plan would be. All that time she spent alone was to figure out how she would move forward since I wasn’t her mate. In a way, I felt guilty. It tore me up inside to think she would face being an Alpha and a mother alone. I would always be there for her of course, but it would be different. Eventually I would find my mate and settle down with a family of my own. James was resigned to never finding that kind of happiness to protect her place as our rightful Alpha. It hurt watching her go through all of this over the years and knowing there was nothing I could do. Part of me wondered if I never found my mate, could we try again? I knew deep down she and I would always have a different bond. We had a deeper and more special connection than anyone else, even deeper than the connection between her and Wren. It’s a unique situation for sure, as I’m sure no Alpha and Gamma can say they’ve been in love with one another for a third of their lives. But I knew I would find my mate someday, and so I had to do what I could to move on. Fast forward to this meeting of the Alpha’s Circle. Not only was it a big deal for me to take my place as the future Gamma of the Blood Moon Pack, but I got to stand by the side of the first female Alpha of our kind. My father beamed with pride the whole meeting, knowing that I was a part of history with James and Wren. My mother’s eyes glistened with tears. After the meeting I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with pride and happiness for James. Wren and I worked hard as the future Beta and Gamma, but James had worked 1000 times harder for as long as I could remember. She honored her parent’s choice in naming her as the future Alpha and took it very seriously to live up to her namesake. I couldn’t help myself but to wrap her into my arms and hold her close at this moment. It was when we hugged that everything went to s**t. The Alpha of Opal Moon let out a furious growl as I hugged James. I immediately went into defense mode as I saw another wolf stare murderously at her. I wasn’t sure if I was defending her because it was HER, or because she was my Alpha. It honestly didn’t matter to me at that moment. She began speaking and ordered us to stand down, not even bothering to use her Alpha tone. She knew it wasn’t needed. Immediately Wren and I relaxed out of our defensive crouches and stood ready and waiting for her next command. She made her way to that Alpha and all of a sudden, he was attacking her. It burned every vein and muscle in my body not to move. My instinct was to protect her, and yet she had told us to stand down. I looked over at Wren and by the look on his face, I knew that he felt the same way. All we could do was watch. We watched as this Alpha pinned her arms above her head and looked at her hungrily. Then, he ran his nose up the length of her long, beautiful neck and I could hear him inhaling deeply. He was taking in her scent. Watching the two of them, it felt like we were peeping in on an intimate moment. It was then I heard him growl the word that I had said to her a hundred times, but they were always hollow: “MINE”. It hurt to watch another male lay claim to her….it hurt like a b***h. For years, almost a decade, I thought that was me. I wanted it to be me. A very small part of me still did, as I had yet to find my mate. I knew there was a woman out there somewhere that’s even more perfect for me than James. And as hard as that was to wrap my brain around, I held on to that hope to get me through the pain when it came. James swiftly knocked him off of her, pinning him down. I couldn’t help the smug smirk on my face as I watched her show how powerful she was. She lingered above this Alpha, then angrily stormed out of the room. It was when he jumped up and charged to the door that Wren and I moved and went to block his way out. We weren’t about to let him after her, mate or not. We knew how she felt about a mate, and we had just seen him threaten her when he saw us hugging. The confrontation between the three of us was not pretty. Stand down fellas Alpha Easton said over our pack mind-link. He walked over and began speaking with Alpha Sebastian. Poor guy was in over his head. Alpha Easton even told him as much after she left the room. Some time passed as we waited, and eventually I heard the door open and turned to see Irina slip back in, then James followed in with her head held high. “Alpha Sebastian, I would like to speak with you…” She cut her eyes over to where Wren, Irina and I were standing, then over to our fathers “…Alone” she said with authority.
