James’ POV
The warm smile on Alpha Lucius’ face froze as soon as I said those words. The room fell icily silent. Luna Victoria glanced uneasily at her mate. Kason began snickering and Lyanna punched him in the arm.
“I’m sorry my dear, what did you say?” Luna Victoria demanded, walking behind her mate and crossing her arms. She had dark brown hair that tumbled in soft waves and icy blue eyes. She was small in stature, but I immediately gathered she was a powerful Luna.
I squared my shoulders and looked at her and said “I am the future Alpha of the Blood Moon pack. And your son’s mate”
Luna Victoria’s lips started to twitch downward into a frown as she looked to her mate. Alpha Lucius’ eyes met his mate’s.
I decided to get ahead of this.
“I know this sounds confusing. I am the firstborn child of Alpha Easton Laurent and Luna Alina MacKenzie Laurent. My parents did not make it well-known they only had daughters, and that the future Alpha of Blood Moon would be their eldest daughter. They wanted to protect me and the pack while I was growing up from rogues and other packs that would want to kidnap me or try to claim me as a mate against my will.”
I heard a low growl from behind me and smirked when I realized it was coming from Sebastian. Males.
Alpha Lucius and Luna Victoria exchanged another look with one another and Victoria spoke first.
“So, my dear, who will take over as Alpha of Blood Moon now? Your sister?”
“No, I will be the next Alpha of Blood Moon”
“But you can’t, you are the next Luna of Opal Moon” Luna Victoria stated, clearly exasperated.
“No, I am not” I defiantly stuck my chin out.
“So you reject my son?” Luna Victoria asked as her voice turned icy.
Lyanna tensed behind her mother and Kason looked uncomfortable.
“No I do not. I was going to, but I cannot and will not” I felt Sebastian tense and I laced my fingers through his.
“My sister and Beta female Irina who is here with me knows all about an ancient ritual that will unite our packs. It involves several traditions and Sebastian and I must prove ourselves as equals, then we can be Alphas together”
“What kind of rituals?? What do you mean? Come, sit down and explain.”
Luna Victoria led us to the couches and we all sat down. Sebastian held onto my hand and placed it in his lap. He and I then began to explain the ritual and the risks that came with it.
“Son, you agreed to this?” Alpha Lucius looked at his son incredulously.
“Absolutely Father, I know it’s a risk, but I believe James is my mate for a reason, and she was born to be Alpha of Blood Moon. I know now I can’t do anything but try to make this work”
He looked at me with such a sweet intensity my stomach flipped and filled with butterflies. I took a sip of water to cool my flushed cheeks and drown the little flutters.
His mother crossed her arms and looked me up and down. His father propped his elbows on his knees, hands clasped as he was thinking. Kason and Lyanna shifted uncomfortably on the couch.
“So you’re going to force my son to give up his place as Alpha?” Luna Victoria asked icily.
“I’m not forcing him to do anything” I replied, equally as cold.
“By not accepting your rightful place as Luna of this pack and insisting on this silly dream of being Alpha, you are” she retorted.
“My rightful place is as Alpha of Blood Moon. My father and mother did not name me as heir to Blood Moon as a silly dream” my voice dropped dangerously low and I could feel Ember’s temper flair.
“There has never been a female Alpha before. You are meant to be my son’s Luna. He cannot risk Opal Moon becoming a part of Blood Moon”
“Interesting, you’re afraid he’s going to lose to me? That’s the smartest thing you’ve said so far” I quipped, leaning back with a smirk on my lips.
Sebastian cut his eyes over to me, and shook his head with a small smile playing at his lips.
“Mother, James and I are both aware of the risk this ritual poses. But she and I are going to take this time to get to know one another and prepare for the ritual. Also, we will not complete it until she has been made Alpha of Blood Moon. That was our agreement. And an Alpha stands by his word.” Sebastian interjected.
“Son, can I speak with you in private?” Alpha Lucius asked, motioning for his son to follow him to the conference room that was to the side.
Sebastian nodded his head and gave my hand a squeeze.
“I’ll be right back love” he said with a wink.
And with that he left me to face his mother alone.
